What Really Goes On In Billie Joe's Head, chapter 54
Adie set another plate in front of Joey and Jakob.
Joey sat on my lap as he started stabbing his food. Adie was helping Jakob cut his food. I yawned and listened to Joey smacking on the bacon.
The phone started ringing, so Adie got up to answer it.
She leaned against the wall as she nodded. I looked at her face. She looked worried, so that got me worried.
She bit her bottom lip and put the phone down.
Adie came back over to the dining table. I touched her hand.
"What is it?" I asked.
She shook her head.
"I-it's nothing.."
She sighed.
The door flung open. I flung my head in that direction.
"What the-" I muttered.
Tre and Mike stepped in. Tre lost his balance and fell on the ground.
"What's wrong with him?" I asked.
Jakob giggled.
Tre scrambled up onto his feet.
"Hangover," muttered Mike, loud enough so I could hear.
"Wait what?" I asked as I neared him.
"We went partying after you went back to your room. Tre got himself into some deep shit that night," he explained.
"I'm standing right here," said Tre.
"Well how do I put this...A one night stand,"
"Who? You?"
"No, idiot. Tre."
I nodded.
"Well what we're here for is to tell you that..." Tre yawned as he continued.
"We've arranged to take care of your kids just so you and Adie could spend your little anniversary together."
Mike winked at me. Tre went over to the kids and squatted to their height.
"You wanna come play with uncle Tre today?" he asked.
The kids excitedly nodded. I chuckled. For a second, Tre sounded kind of kinky when he asked the kids to come play with him.
"Have a good time," said Mike as Tre and the kids followed him out the door. The room was silent when the kids left.
Adie looked around and was blinking a lot. I went over towards her.
"You ok?" I asked.
Adie pursed her lips.
"Mark...He's close to dying..right now," she said.
"Your brother?" I asked as I made a move to wrap my arms around her.
Mark and Adie aren't very close and have very little contact between each other, but they're siblings.
Mark had been diagnosed with cancer about 18 years ago.
Tears started rolling down her face, leaving black mascara streaks on her face. I wiped her eyes with my thumb as I held her head.
"Don't cry Adie..Don't cry.." I murmured.
I kissed her forehead and held her close. I could feel her resting her head on my shoulder.
"Just today...I'll forget all the tragedy," she said.
"Don't forget...but have a good time," I said.
She held me tighter.
"It just may be alright, honestly," I reassured her.
I hadn't seen her cry in a while. The sight was horrifying.
"Come on. We're gonna have a good time today," I said as I squeezed her hand.
She brushed the tears off her face and nodded.
"I'm gonna change.." she said as she trudged off to the bedroom.
