What Really Goes On In Billie Joe's Head, chapter 9
She stared at me for a while and then said, "Come on, it's getting late. Let's go."
I nodded and I payed at the cash register. I was going to get in the car, but Adie pulled my arm.
"Let's walk.... to Starbucks." She said.
Starbucks was right around the corner, but she took the long way to get there.
"There had been a time when I cheated on you," She said.
I looked at her face and saw how stressed she looked. I didn't want to make it worse so I just kept my mouth shut.
"But that was long ago. He would always talk about marriage to me. He didn't know that I was already engaged to you at the time. And one day, he came to me with a small case. And I knew what was in there. I didn't know what to do so I started running. I don't know if he was coming after me or not, but I knew he was calling my name. I didn't look back. When I got to your house he kept on calling. We have caller ID so I could see that he was calling. It seemed like he never gave up, but eventually he did. I felt so guilty about it." She said.
I put my arm around her shoulder.
"But I got over it. Now that I'm with you." She said as she smiled.
"I'm glad you did," I said softly.
When we reached Starbucks I asked if I could buy her a coffee.
"Nah, I just suggested going here just for the walk." She answered.
I went in to get a coffee anyway. I got a double shot tall latte with extra whip cream. I payed for the coffee and stepped outside, where Adie was waiting. We walked back, the short way, to the car and I opened the door for Adie. I got in the drivers seat and started driving. I didn't drive in the direction of home, I drove in the direction of Gilman Street. Adie looked a little confused, but she didn't say anything. I didn't say anything either. We got out of the car and walked to the bench on the side of the club wall. We didn't sit on the bench, but looked at the graffiti behind it. The club was booming with music and a several kids were outside. I felt Adie grab my hand.
"Did I ever tell you that this is where I first saw Tre wearing a dress?" I told her. She laughed. We went back to the car after that and I told Adie that I had to stop by Tre's place for a second. She nodded and when we got to Tre's house, I knocked on the door and Tre answered it. I came in with Adie and she went to the kitchen to chat with Tre's ex-girlfriend.
"Why're you here?" he asked.
"I left Blue here, the original Blue." I said.
"Can you not sleep without it?" he asked.
I went in the basement where I had left it. I took Blue and hugged her. I ran back upstairs and thanked Tre. Later, me and Adie left and went home finally. Adie was holding Blue as I was driving. She knew the story of Blue and knew how precious she was to me. I pulled into our drive way and when we got in the house, Becky greeted us. She had helped the kids make cookies. We payed her and then she left. Joey and Jakob gave us cookies and we ate it. I found an eggshell in mine.
"Let's put you guys to bed," said Adie as she held Joey's hand and picked up Jakob.
I went in the bathroom to brush my teeth and all. This time I put on my "Dead Kennedys" shirt and a pair of boxers. I lied in bed for awhile, but I couldn't sleep. It was probably because of the coffee. I turned my body around and I noticed a dark figure beside me. Probably Adie. I watched her breath peacefully for a while but I began tossing and turning, trying to go to sleep. I sqeezed my eyes shut, but it seemed to hurt whenever I closed my eyes. I looked at the clock. I had been trying to go to sleep for an hour already. after another hour or so, the tossing and turning made me exhausted so I went to sleep. I just don't know when.
