Tripping Over Raindrops, chapter 10

Turning to make their way down yet another long alley Billie Joe sighed,
"Jessie... Where are we going!"
"Hold on BJ! We're almost there I promise." She replied smiling.
With another sigh Billie Joe shoved his hands in his pockets and continued to walk. Billie Joe was watching his feet when he heard Jessie stopped, but before he could look up a pair of hands flew over his eyes.
"Aww Jess! Come on!"
"Come on Billie walk this way, don't worry I won't let you get hit by a car." Jess replied steering him across the street. As she lowered her hands Billie Joe saw the park he used to always go to just to get away from everything. He smiled,
"I love this place."
"I do too." Jessie replied smiling back.
They walked over to an empty picnic table and sat down.
"So how's your mom been?" Jess asked propping her head on her hand.
"Good, she's still all for the band if that's what you mean." Billie Joe replied.
"You know one time when I was around nine I was out here just walking, and this little kid came running out of the bushes and knocked me over. I didn't really see her face, but I remember she had long blond hair. It was funny though, she didn't help me up but kept running and just screamed sorry." Billie Joe said looking around at the park. When he looked back at Jessie her cheeks were bright red and she was staring down at the table.
"What's wrong?" Billie Joe asked.
"I'm sorry BJ, I didn't mean to knock you down. I just..."
"What?"
"I just, there were these kids that were chasing me and I couldn't stop to help you up, but I wanted to. I felt really bad for knocking you down. I'm sorry." Jessie said quietly.
"You? It was you? Jessie don't worry about it, that was when I was nine. Did you get away from those kids?" Billie Joe said smiling.
Jessie looked up slowly and shook her head, "No they caught up with me like a block away from here. Remember when you first met me I had a cast on my arm?"
"Yeah." Billie Joe replied.
"That was from those kids, but it doesn't matter now. That was a long time ago." Jessie said looking up at some kids that had just arrived.
"Oh... I'm sorry Jess. I would've helped you." Billie Joe said watching the kids as they ran to the swings.
Jessie looked back at him, "BJ you know I don't like talking to new people. I wouldn't be exactly up to making friend with someone I just knocked over."
"Yeah, I know. What were they after you for anyway?" Billie Joe asked looking down at the table again.
"I don't know, something stupid I'm sure. They just don't like me. If you haven't noticed Billie I'm not that popular." Jess replied twirling her ring.
"Well I still like you." Billie Joe said standing up and walking over holding out his hand for Jess.
"Where are we going now?" Jessie asked taking his hand.
"Just to walk." Billie Joe replied.
Just as they were passing the swings Jess felt a slight tug on her shirt. She looked down to see a little girl probably around 6-ish with long brown hair and green eyes. The little girl motioned for her to lean down so she did. Billie Joe smiled as he watched the little girl whisper something.
"Don't you know, boys have cooties." The littles girl said.
"Not this one." Jessie whispered back smiling.
The little girl looked up in surprise then smiled.
"So all of them don't?"
Jessie shook her head in resopnse. With that the little girl dashed off back to the swings where the other kids were. Billie Joe laughed as the little girl turned and winked at him before returning to her swing. He turned to look at Jess,
"So what was that about?" he asked smiling.
"Billie Joe, don't you know. I can't tell you that, it's a girl thing." Jessie replied.
Billie Joe rolled his eyes. "Riiight."
He noticed a drop of water hit his cheek. Jessie looked up,
"Um, BJ I think we should head home."
A few moments later a huge wave of heavy rain fell.
"C'mon! I know somewhere else we can go until it clears up!" Billie Joe yelled as they ran down the street.
