Tripping Over Raindrops, chapter 4
The doctors had ended up making Jess stay over night. When Mike had asked why they said she could have a possible concusion and they need to make sure nothing went wrong overnight. The next morning she woke up and saw Mike in a chair beside her along with Billie Joe in another chair and Tre' in the seat by the window. They were all still sleeping. She looked and saw a mirror beside her bed. She hesitantly picked it up and looked in it. She wanted to cry, but it hurt. There was no way she would ever talk to Ray again, but she was going to have to hide from him. 'How was I so stupid.' Jess thought to herself. She quietly set the mirror back down and looked around at the guys again. Mike, Tre', she stopped on Billie Joe. Why couldn't she have someone like him? Why...why couldn't she have HIM. He was always there, she trusted him with all her heart. It wasn't fair. Nothing was ever fair. She never got what she wanted. Jess had never really thought about it, but she gave everything up to make sure the people she loved were happy. This didn't bother her one bit, but she never could get over why she had to lose her mom and dad. She had only been three but she knew they weren't coming back.

The rain had been pouring down, they had all went out to eat. It was their parents thirteenth aniversary. They were on their way home now. Their dad was driving, their mom was in the pasenger's seat while they sat in the back. Jessie was watching the raindrops glide across her window while Mike was fiddling with his seat beat.
"Jess honey, did you help your daddy pick out this bracelet?" her mom asked as she turned around. Jess nodded as she looked up at her mother. "It's beautiful, dear." Mike watched them as they talked, his little sister looked just like his mom. The only thing that separated the look was her eyes. His mother had crystal blue eyes that seemed to sparkle when she laughed. His little sisters eyes were an emerald color, but they still had the genuine crystal quality to them. They sparkled everytime she looked up to him or rather looked at anything. And, like her mother, she could light up the room with her smile. Their mother smiled and turned to their father, "Happy aniversary, Ryan." she said. "You too, Michelle."
Mike turned and started watching the rain outside. Jess reached over and thumped him on the shoulder. He turned and looked at her, "What?" he said making her laugh and shrug. "Nothing." Mike looked back out the window and felt his sister lay down beside him, laying her head on his lap. He found her hand and held it as she started to fall asleep. A few minutes later, the sound of their mother's scream filled the car. Mike grabbed his sister and pulled her as close as he could to him. Their father frantically turned the wheel as the lights of another car filled the inside of theirs. Mike looked up to see his mother push him and his sister to the other side of the car with tears in her eyes. Her eyes, he knew then she loved them with all her heart, he knew she would always watch them, he knew she was going to be gone. The sound of wheels squealing, glass breaking, and metal bending filled their ears as Mike sqeezed close to his sister as she screamed. After that, everything was dark and cold and wet. They could still remember the sound of the sirens. They still remember watching their mom and dad be put on stretchers. They hadn't died that night, it was the next day. The doctor's said they died because of "complications". At least they had gotten to see them before then, even if it was for only a moment. Jess had fought her way into her mother's room to see her, "I love you mommy! Please don't go!" She yelled.
Her mother's eyes looked down at her as she handed her the bracelet, "I'll never leave you, I love you, be good for your brother, I love you both so much." Those were the last words Jess ever heard her mother say before the doctor's pulled her out of the room. Mike was standing right there to meet her, the doctors had just pushed him away from their father's room as well. Jess turned and looked up at her brother. She knew something was very very wrong, because he had tears in his eyes.
"They aren't coming back are they?" Jess said still looking up at her brother.
The tears fell as he shook his head slowly.
Jess hugged him tightly, "Mom said she loved us."
"Dad said he did too, he said take care of you, and it was going to be okay....but we know. It isn't going to be okay." Mike said holding his sister close. They were very mature for their age at that time, but right then they both grew up instantly.
***
Jess jumped slightly as the door to her room creaked open. She looked up to see a man with a white jacket, obviously a doctor.
"How are you doing today Jessie?" he said smiling.
"As well as I can be I guess." She replied.
"Well you can leave today if you want, you seem to be doing fine." He said.
"Oh really? That's good, can I go now?" Jess asked nicely.
"Yes, just sign some papers at the desk." He said.
Jess nodded as he left the room.
