Tripping Over Raindrops, chapter 6
The next week was pretty much the same. Billie Joe was never far from Jess' side. This was probably the best for both of them, because lately they had seemed to be growing more distant than ever. Now they had a chance to bring each other closer and not have to seem suspicious. Billie Joe was actually surprised when Jessie protested him leaving her upstairs to go to band practice, saying she hated missing practices because she loved to watch them play. At this, he was astonished but excited none the less. It was nice to know she enjoyed hearing them play. He had always thought she only watched them when she was bored senseless and had nothing better to do. It never occurred to him that she must have had nothing to do all the time. The next Sunday Jess was pretty much able to do everything on her own again without much pain. Even so, there were still a few things she couldn't quite do, and for those there was Billie Joe.
They had all just finished Dinner, Tre' and Billie Joe were staying over again, and Jess was finishing up the dishes.
"So what do you guys have planned for tomorrow?" Jess asked drying a plate.
"Probably just practicing." Mike replied leaning back in his chair.
"Yeah well then one of you wouldn't mind going down and picking up some groceries huh?" Jess said putting the plate up.
"No problem, just make a list and I'll go down there when I get up." Mike said.
"Okay thanks Mikey." Jess said starting on the silverware.
"Well what are you planning for tomorrow?" Mike asked noticing Jess seemed to be in a pretty happy mood.
"Nothing, I have to clean this place up because it's getting unbarable. Then, I'll probably go read or something and go watch you guys practice later." Jess said put the silverware up.
"Sounds fun." Tre' said boredly.
"Yeah, why don't you do something fun Jess?" Mike said sitting up, obviously thinking of something. Billie Joe eyed him suspiciously.
"Like what?" Jess asked sitting down across from Billie Joe.
"Like..."Mike started still trying to think of something.
"Like spend the day with Billie Joe. You guys need to get out of the house anyway." Tre' said smiling at Mike, motioning to Billie Joe who was leaning against the table with his chin rested on his palm.
"Well....well...I um....Billie Joe probably has plenty to do tomorrow. I wouldn't want to get in his way, I mean he helps me so much already." Jess said nervously looking from Mike to Billie Joe to Tre'. "R-right Billie Joe?"
Billie Joe snaped out of his day dream at the sound of his name
"Huh? Oh right? Yeah." He said looking over at Mike who gave him a hard look.
"I-I mean No?"
"Yeah, see Jess. You two can do something tomorrow." Tre' said getting up from the table.
"Um, okay. I suppose." Jess said also resting her chin in her palm on the table.
"Well I'm going to go see what's on television." Mike said getting up and heading towards the lounge.
"I think I will too." Said Tre' following Mike.
Jess sighed and got up, catching Billie Joe's attention. He noticed she hadn't put up the bowls, and wondered why. Then he noticed her face as she reached up to open the cupboard.
Jess winced in pain as she stretched to put each bowl up. She should have asked Billie Joe to help, but she didn't want to bother him.
"Jess? Do you need some help?" Billie Joe said getting up and walking over to her.
"Huh? Oh, no. I can do it....Ouch!" Jess said wincing again.
"Jess....you're just going to make it worse, let me help." Billie Joe said.
"Well, but....okay." Jess said sighing as Billie Joe started putting what was left of the bowls up.
Jess watched him carefully as he did this. When he was through he turned around to see her staring at him, but she quickly turned away and found something close to start fiddling with.
"Hey, um, Jess..." Billie Joe started biting his bottom lip nervously 'I have to tell her or hint at her....I have to say something.' He thought.
"Yeah?" Jess said turning and looking at the mail laying on the counter.
"I..." Billie Joe started, just then the doorbell rang.
"Oh hold on Billie Joe I'll be right back." Jess said hurrying to the door.
Billie Joe sighed and rubbed the back of his neck.
The doorbell rang again as Jess reached the door. "Hold on!" Jess said unlocking the door. She gasp as she opened it.
"R-R...Ray?" She stuttered.
"Hey baby, I'm sorry about that night. I just came by to apologize. You know I didn't mean it, I never meant to hurt you. I was drunk, I'm sorry. I just hope you take me back because....this week without you made me realized how much...I-I...well I love you Jess. I really do, please forgive me." Ray said handing her a beautiful bouquet of expensive looking flowers.
"Ray....I don't know. I mean I had to go to the hospital. You did a lot of damage. I don't think I can just forgive you for that." Jess said looking down at the flowers.
"I understand, but I love you Jess. I didn't know you had to go to the hospital, why didn't someone tell me?! I would have brought you something." Ray said sweetly.
"Well I was only in there one night..." Jess said, she seemed to be falling under the power Ray seemed to have over her. Billie Joe was watching from the doorway to the kitchen growing more and more angry at every word Ray said. He was furious that Jess was actually falling for his shit again.
"Maybe no one told you she was there because YOU were the fucking one who put her there!" Billie Joe burst as ray took a step closer to Jess. Ray's face went from surprise at Billie Joe's outburst to anger, to caring again. Mike had walked up just in time to catch this and this caught his eye. He saw the same anger in Ray's eyes as that night.
"You right, Billie Joe. I'm sorry Jess. I promise I'll never do anything like that again." Ray said in a sickening sweet voice.
"Ray, I think you need to leave." Mike said.
"I think you need to mind you own business." Ray snapped.
"This is my fucking house and my fucking sister, THIS IS MY FUCKING BUSINESS!" Mike yelled. Jess was still standing there in the middle staring down at the flowers, but she knew when Mike yelled it was serious. Jess listened as Billie Joe and Mike argued with Ray. She heard Ray trying hard to stay calm, she had heard it so many times before. Eventually she knew he would snap. He always did. Tre' heard all the racket and approached the argument carefully. He saw the look on Jess' face and knew she was thinking of something. She watched how protective Mike was, but she never realized how much Billie Joe cared. He was almost as protective as Mike, but it seemed different somehow. Her mind raced thinking of things to get Ray to leave. Then it hit her.
Jess looked up at Ray with big puppy eyes that she could always pull off perfectly.
"Ray?" She said sweetly.
"Yes, babe?" Ray said looking at her ignoring Mike's last remark about him being 'just another stuckup cocky fucker'.
"I'm sorry, but I can't take you back. You will do it again. I'm not stupid. You should know that. That is you would know that if you would have paid more attention to me and what I was saying rather than the other girls around us." Jess said looking at the ground, before anyone else could say anything she started again.
"I'm sorry Ray, but I won't take you back, I can't anyway, because I...well..." Her mind raced 'What now....think!'
"I'm, uh, with Billie Joe now." She said grabbing Billie Joe's arm and linking it with hers. Then, just as she had known Ray snaped.
"Wow, you sure do get around fast huh you little fucking whore?!" He said, his eyes flashing with anger.
"DON'T YOU DARE CALL HER A WHORE!" Tre' screamed
Ray ignored it and continued, "I just wanted you for a good ride anyway! I see now that you wouldn't have been that great even if I did get you in bed finally because you obviously just another slut! And don't you come crying back to me when he cheats on you too! Oh THAT'S RIGHT! YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THAT DID YOU! HA! YOU ACTUALLY FUCKING THOUGHT YOU WERE THE ONLY FUCKING ONE?! YOU'RE JUST ANOTHER FUCKING TEASE! NO ONE IS GOING TO ACTUALLY BE "TRUE" OR WHAT THE FUCK EVER!!!" Ray said turning and storming out of the door.
Through all of it Jess just stood there and took it, just like she always had. Mike, Tre' and Billie Joe were stunned by what he just said. Billie Joe noticed Jess gripping his arm tightly and she was starting to shake. She wasn't going to take it anymore. If this was the last thing she ever did she was going to stick it to Ray and give him a big piece of her mind. A few seconds later she ripped out of the house to catch Ray before he made it to his car. Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre' followed
"Jess! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!" Billie Joe yelled running after her, damn she was fast.
Jess caught up to Ray and Exploded, she let everything she had ever wanted to say out.
" YOU LISTEN TO ME NOW YOU STUPID THICK HEADED MOTHER FUCKER! I AM NOT A FUCKING SLUT OR WHORE, I'M STILL A FUCKING VIRGIN YOU BASTARD! AND YOU'RE ONE DUMBFUCK TO THINK I WOULD HAVE EVER GIVEN THAT UP TO YOU. YOU'RE NOTHING BUT ANOTHER PRETTY MAMA'S BOY WHO GETS WHATEVER THE FUCK HE WANTS AND THROWS A FUCKING HISSY FIT WHEN HE DOESN'T! BLODDY HELL YOU DESERVE TO HAVE A BASEBALL BAT SHOVED UP YOUR ASS I SWEAR TO GOD! YOU ACT LIKE SOMEONES ALREADY DONE THAT MUCH! AND ME BEING A FUCKING TEASE THAT IS BULLSHIT BECAUSE I NEVER LEAD YOU TO THINK I WOULD EVER DO ANYTHING WITH YOU! AND YOU WOULDN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT BEING TRUE OF COURSE BUT THAT DOESN'T FUCKING MEAN NO ONE IN THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD ISN'T!! YOU NEED TO LEAVE AND NEVER EVER COME BACK BECAUSE I SWEAR IF YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT CRAWLING OUT OF YOUR LITTLE DARK FUCKING HOLE TO TRY AND WEASEL YOUR WAY BACK INTO MY LIFE I WILL KILL YOU! I HATE YOU! YOU'RE NOTHING BUT A FUCKING DUMBASS BITCH BOY! SO FUCK OFF!!!!!!!!!"
Ray stood there shocked along with Billie Joe. Mike and Tre' who were behind Jess. Jess was shaking with anger and her eyes were watering. Ray came back to his senses and started to go after her, but decided to just leave. This was probably the smartest thing he ever did, ever. Ray pulled out of the driveway quickly and drove off, burning his wheels in the process by burning out. Jess didn't move from her spot. She just stared at where his car had just left still shaking with clenched fists.
Billie Joe walked up behind her and put an arm around her shoulder. Jess relaxed and turned to him, wrapping her arms around him and crying into his chest softly. Billie Joe hugged her close, "It's okay Jess, you did it. You told him. He's gone."
"I know Billie Joe. I know." Jess said looking up at him.
"Come on lets go inside." Mike said walking up with Tre'.
"That was brave Jess. I love the baseball bat thing." Tre' said laughing.
Jess smiled which made Mike and Billie Joe smile.
Inside Tre' walked back over to the couch and sat down. Mike sat in a chair next to him.
"I think I'm going to go get a shower guys, I'll come down in a little while to say good night." Jess said letting go of Billie Joe and walking upstairs. Billie Joe watched her until she reached the top. Jess turned around and smiled back at him as he looked down quickly. She made her way to the bathroom and turned on the shower. While it was warming up she got all her night clothes together and her towels.
Billie Joe turned and walked over to the couch taking a seat beside Tre'. They all sat there in silence for a moment watching the television.
"Did you know she was still a virgin?" Mike said finally.
"I never really thought about it I guess. Nothing ever made me think different if that's what you mean." Tre' shrugged.

"I can't believe Jessie actually knew he was cheating on her and she didn't drop him." Tre' said.
"Yeah, she's so much smarter than that." Billie Joe said.
"You know Billie Joe....you should really tell her." Mike said.
"What are you talking about Mike." Billie Joe said defensively.
"Billie Joe...." Tre' whined.
"Yeah I know....."Billie Joe said.
"I mean, at least I know you wouldn't hit her..." Mike said looking down.
"I still can't believe he did that. I don't think I could ever bring myself to do something like that you know?" he continued.
"And SHE TOOK IT! That's what just stuns me." Tre' replied.
"Mike..."Billie Joe said breaking up his and Tre' conversation.
"Yeah?" Mike asked.
"Why do you want her to be with me so bad? I'm not saying I don't like her but I'm just curious, because you are really pushing for it." Billie Joe said.
Mike looked down at his feet, this question had definately caught him off guard. He tried to figure out how to put it into words without sounding like a total wuss.
"Well..."He said after a while, " It's just, when we were little she had like a sparkle in her eyes and she was always so happy. She got it from our mom, she looks just like her you know. And well it's just I don't know after that night of the accident that sparkle kind of faded away and when she's around you she can light up the room again. I know it sounds stupid....." Mike said looking up.
"Mike, it doesn't sound stupid." Tre' said. Billie Joe was surprised, did she really like him, did he really do that to her. Billie Joe smiled. They heard the bathroom door open.
"I'm going to go to bed guys." Billie Joe said getting up.
"Night." Tre' said. Mike just nodded.
Jess turned as she opened her door when she heard footsteps. Her stomach jumped when she saw Billie Joe's face appear. He smiled.
"Hey, feeling better?" He asked.
"Yeah." She said.
He sighed as he walked past her towards his room, or well the one he usually stayed in.
"Um, Billie Joe?" Jess asked timidly.
"Yeah?" He said turning around.
"Would you...um do you...will you stay in my room with me tonight?" Jess finally got out, as soon as she did she felt her cheeks flush with colour. "I-I mean y-you don't have you if you don't want to, I was just asking because well I'm still kind of...s-shaken by earlier a-a-and..." She quickly started again.
"Jess, don't worry about it. I don't mind, just let me get a shower and get changed for bed. I'll be in there in a little while okay?" Billie Joe said smiling.
Jess nodded shyly still blushing. She watched as he turned and walked to his room. 'I can't believe I actually just ask him that....and he said okay.' she thought as she walked downstairs to tell Tre' and Mike good night.
"Hey Jess, doing okay?" Tre' said walking towards the kitchen.
"Yeah, much better now." Jess said hugging him.
"Mmmm you smell fruity." Tre' said smiling.
Jess laughed and walked over to Mike, he seemed serious.
"Something bothering you Mikey?" Jess asked sitting odwn next to him.
"Huh? Oh no Nothing." Mike said looking up.
"You sure?"Jess asked.
"Yeah, you doing alright now?" Mike said changing the subject.
"Yeah, just came down to say good night." Jess said.
"Good. I'm glad you did what you did earlier Jess. It showed that you hadn't changed one bit." Mike said smiling.
Jess smiled and gave him a hug. " Yeah, well I'm tired now from all that so I'm going to head off to bed. Good night."
"Good night." Mike said as Jess got up and headed up stairs.
She could hear Billie Joe singing in the shower as she past the bathroom. She laughed quietly to herself as she reached her room. She picked up a few things just to tidy up a bit before Billie Joe came in there. She sat on her bed and decided to start reading on the book she needed to finish. A little while later her door creaked as it opened.
"Hey." Billie Joe said walking over and sitting on her bed.
"Hey." Jess said looking up from her book.
"I loved your new shampoo song." Jess said laughing.
Billie Joe looked down and smiled, "You heard that huh?"
"Yeah." Jess said setting her book on her night stand.
"Well I don't think anything can top your rubber duck song." Billie Joe said looking up.
"Billie Joe that was when I was 6 that doesn't count!" Jess protested.
"Sure it does." Billie Joe said laughing.
Jess just shook her head laughing.
"Okay what ever you say BJ, but who makes these rules?" Jess asked.
"Me." Billie Joe replied smiling.
"Ah I see." Jess said smiling. She was just starting to notice how good Billie Joe actually looked underneath it all. They both laughed as they locked eyes.
Suddenly it was as if everythig stopped. Nothing mattered to either of them. Billie Joe saw what Mike had been talking about. Jess' eyes suddenly seemed to gleam. Jess seemed to get lost in Billie Joe's. When it finally hit them how close they were to one another it was too late. Their lips locked, but neither of them pulled away. Jess closed her eyes as her hands made their way through Billie Joe's messy blonde hair. Billie Joe leaned forward wrapping his arms around Jess' waist, he had wanted this for so long. They couldn't believe it was actually happening. Jess leaned back onto her bed pulling Billie Joe with her. Jess couldn't help but smile and she felt Billie Joe do the same. When they finally broke off Billie Joe laid down beside Jess and pulled her close.
"Billie Joe..."Jess said finally laying her head on his chest.
"Yeah?" Billie Joe replied.
"Promise me you're not going to hurt me." Jess said after a long silence.

Ray stood there shocked along with Billie Joe. Mike and Tre' who were behind Jess. Jess was shaking with anger and her eyes were watering. Ray came back to his senses and started to go after her, but decided to just leave. This was probably the smartest thing he ever did, ever. Ray pulled out of the driveway quickly and drove off, burning his wheels in the process by burning out. Jess didn't move from her spot. She just stared at where his car had just left still shaking with clenched fists.
Billie Joe walked up behind her and put an arm around her shoulder. Jess relaxed and turned to him, wrapping her arms around him and crying into his chest softly. Billie Joe hugged her close, "It's okay Jess, you did it. You told him. He's gone."
"I know Billie Joe. I know." Jess said looking up at him.
"Come on lets go inside." Mike said walking up with Tre'.
"That was brave Jess. I love the baseball bat thing." Tre' said laughing.
Jess smiled which made Mike and Billie Joe smile.
Inside Tre' walked back over to the couch and sat down. Mike sat in a chair next to him.
"I think I'm going to go get a shower guys, I'll come down in a little while to say good night." Jess said letting go of Billie Joe and walking upstairs. Billie Joe watched her until she reached the top. Jess turned around and smiled back at him as he looked down quickly. She made her way to the bathroom and turned on the shower. While it was warming up she got all her night clothes together and her towels.
Billie Joe turned and walked over to the couch taking a seat beside Tre'. They all sat there in silence for a moment watching the television.
"Did you know she was still a virgin?" Mike said finally.
"I never really thought about it I guess. Nothing ever made me think different if that's what you mean." Tre' shrugged.
Billie Joe nodded.
"I can't believe Jessie actually knew he was cheating on her and she didn't drop him." Tre' said.
"Yeah, she's so much smarter than that." Billie Joe said.
"You know Billie Joe....you should really tell her." Mike said.
"What are you talking about Mike." Billie Joe said defensively.
"Billie Joe...." Tre' whined.
"Yeah I know....."Billie Joe said.
"I mean, at least I know you wouldn't hit her..." Mike said looking down.
"I still can't believe he did that. I don't think I could ever bring myself to do something like that you know?" he continued.
"And SHE TOOK IT! That's what just stuns me." Tre' replied.
"Mike..."Billie Joe said breaking up his and Tre' conversation.
"Yeah?" Mike asked.
"Why do you want her to be with me so bad? I'm not saying I don't like her but I'm just curious, because you are really pushing for it." Billie Joe said.
Mike looked down at his feet, this question had definately caught him off guard. He tried to figure out how to put it into words without sounding like a total wuss.
"Well..."He said after a while, " It's just, when we were little she had like a sparkle in her eyes and she was always so happy. She got it from our mom, she looks just like her you know. And well it's just I don't know after that night of the accident that sparkle kind of faded away and when she's around you she can light up the room again. I know it sounds stupid....." Mike said looking up.
"Mike, it doesn't sound stupid." Tre' said. Billie Joe was surprised, did she really like him, did he really do that to her. Billie Joe smiled. They heard the bathroom door open.
"I'm going to go to bed guys." Billie Joe said getting up.
"Night." Tre' said. Mike just nodded.
Jess turned as she opened her door when she heard footsteps. Her stomach jumped when she saw Billie Joe's face appear. He smiled.
"Hey, feeling better?" He asked.
"Yeah." She said.
He sighed as he walked past her towards his room, or well the one he usually stayed in.
"Um, Billie Joe?" Jess asked timidly.
"Yeah?" He said turning around.
"Would you...um do you...will you stay in my room with me tonight?" Jess finally got out, as soon as she did she felt her cheeks flush with colour. "I-I mean y-you don't have you if you don't want to, I was just asking because well I'm still kind of...s-shaken by earlier a-a-and..." She quickly started again.
"Jess, don't worry about it. I don't mind, just let me get a shower and get changed for bed. I'll be in there in a little while okay?" Billie Joe said smiling.
Jess nodded shyly still blushing. She watched as he turned and walked to his room. 'I can't believe I actually just ask him that....and he said okay.' she thought as she walked downstairs to tell Tre' and Mike good night.
"Hey Jess, doing okay?" Tre' said walking towards the kitchen.
"Yeah, much better now." Jess said hugging him.
"Mmmm you smell fruity." Tre' said smiling.
Jess laughed and walked over to Mike, he seemed serious.
"Something bothering you Mikey?" Jess asked sitting odwn next to him.
"Huh? Oh no Nothing." Mike said looking up.
"You sure?"Jess asked.
"Yeah, you doing alright now?" Mike said changing the subject.
"Yeah, just came down to say good night." Jess said.
"Good. I'm glad you did what you did earlier Jess. It showed that you hadn't changed one bit." Mike said smiling.
Jess smiled and gave him a hug. " Yeah, well I'm tired now from all that so I'm going to head off to bed. Good night."
"Good night." Mike said as Jess got up and headed up stairs.
She could hear Billie Joe singing in the shower as she past the bathroom. She laughed quietly to herself as she reached her room. She picked up a few things just to tidy up a bit before Billie Joe came in there. She sat on her bed and decided to start reading on the book she needed to finish. A little while later her door creaked as it opened.
"Hey." Billie Joe said walking over and sitting on her bed.
"Hey." Jess said looking up from her book.
"I loved your new shampoo song." Jess said laughing.
Billie Joe looked down and smiled, "You heard that huh?"
"Yeah." Jess said setting her book on her night stand.
"Well I don't think anything can top your rubber duck song." Billie Joe said looking up.
"Billie Joe that was when I was 6 that doesn't count!" Jess protested.
"Sure it does." Billie Joe said laughing.
Jess just shook her head laughing.
"Okay what ever you say BJ, but who makes these rules?" Jess asked.
"Me." Billie Joe replied smiling.
"Ah I see." Jess said smiling. She was just starting to notice how good Billie Joe actually looked underneath it all. They both laughed as they locked eyes.
Suddenly it was as if everythig stopped. Nothing mattered to either of them. Billie Joe saw what Mike had been talking about. Jess' eyes suddenly seemed to gleam. Jess seemed to get lost in Billie Joe's. When it finally hit them how close they were to one another it was too late. Their lips locked, but neither of them pulled away. Jess closed her eyes as her hands made their way through Billie Joe's messy blonde hair. Billie Joe leaned forward wrapping his arms around Jess' waist, he had wanted this for so long. They couldn't believe it was actually happening. Jess leaned back onto her bed pulling Billie Joe with her. Jess couldn't help but smile and she felt Billie Joe do the same. When they finally broke off Billie Joe laid down beside Jess and pulled her close.
"Billie Joe..."Jess said finally laying her head on his chest.
"Yeah?" Billie Joe replied.
"Promise me you're not going to hurt me." Jess said after a long silence.
"I would never ever do anything to hurt you Jess. I promise." Billie Joe said playing with a piece of her hair. Jess smiled as they both drifted off to sleep.
