Tripping Over Raindrops, chapter 8
Billie Joe, still utterly confused, decided to just leave Jess be and walked over to sit down by Mike. Had he done something wrong? Was she upset about last night? His thoughts were broken as he heard Mike ask him a question.
"What was her problem?" Mike said leaning back on the couch once more after moving to give Billie Joe room to sit.
It took Billie Joe a few seconds to shift from his thoughts and take in Mike's question.
"Oh, um, I don't know." Billie Joe said truthfully running a hand through his disheveled hair.
"Well I'll talk to her later. I have to go down to the store though, wanna come?" Mike said standing up and stretching.
"Huh? No, I'm going to stay... To see what's up with her." Billie Joe said nervously, thoughts still running through his head.
"Okay, but dude, I wouldn't think on it too much." Mike added noticing Billie's concerned face, "Girls are weird sometimes."
Billie nodded as Mike walked off.
Why wouldn't Billie Joe talk to her about this other girl? Did he not trust her? Jessie debated these things in her mind as she grabbed a clean Blue shirt and a pair of comfortable jeans and pulled them on.
' I mean, it's not like I would have been jealous or anything. The guys always talk to me. Why would Billie keep something from me. I'm just making a big deal out of nothing... I mean, why should I care. Whatever it was, it's obviously over... Right? ' Jessie thought frantically as she pulled on her black and white studded belt, Billie Joe had gotten her for her birthday this year and she wore it everyday.
'Of course and besides it's not like we're together. ' And with that she felt a sudden pang of hurt. 'We're not together. ' She thought again as though she didn't completely grasp it the first time. Then everything seemed so obvious. He was just using her. All the little things, the hugs out of nowhere, the looks, smiles, glances, laughs, and that kiss. All of it was just for fun? Jessie kneeled down as she felt her feelings crumble, but some part of her was holding strong, ' Billie Joe would never do that. ' All the thoughts in her head clashed as she felt silent tears stream down her face.
Jessie jumped as she heard a knock on the door.
"Jess? J-Jess, can I come in?" Billie Joe's voice traveled through the room.
Trying to hold back her tears Jessie managed a grunt as she turned away from the door. Billie Joe couldn't see her like this.
"Jessie, are you okay? You seemed a lit-" Billie Joe said walking into the room as he made his way over to Jess he was cut off by a cold, hard... Teary? Glare.
"Jess! What's the matter?" Billie Joe said kneeling down beside her putting a hand on her shoulder.
"Nothing." Jess said breaking away and standing up.
"Jessie why are you crying?" Billie Joe insisted as he followed her across the room.
"I'm n-not." Jessie replied trying to retain her composer.
"Jessie, I know when you're upset. Please talk to me." Billie Joe said calmly.
"I said it's nothing Billie Joe! Nothing!" Jessie said raising her voice as she headed for the door.
It didn't take Billie Joe long to react, just as Jessie started to open the door Billie Joe push it back shut. Jessie struggled hopelessly a few minutes before turning and glaring at Billie Joe who's hand was still firmly against the door.
"Let me out." Jessie growled.
"No." Billie Joe replied.
"Now." Jessie said.
"No." Billie Joe said again.
"Jess, what's got into you. You were fine last night! What's your deal!" Billie Joe said now raising his voice, but not to threatening levels.
"Nothing! It doesn't matter! I-I mean Nothing matters right? None of it! It's just so... I just can't believe!" Jessie said bursting into sobs and sliding her back down the door.
Billie Joe's face softened, "Jessie..." He said comfortingly "What's going on, what are you talking about?"
"B-Billie Why d-d-didn't you t-tell m-me about t-that g-g-girl?" Jessie said trying to keep up with her breath.
"What girl?" Billie Joe asked with a quizzical look.
"Y-You wrote a-a s-s-song a-about h-her! I found it i-in your room. I k-know I s-shouldn't have, but I-I was just s-so curious." Jess sputtered looking down in shame. Billie Joe sat there shocked at how upset one of his songs had made her. He racked his brain trying to think. Then it hit him,
" Jess? Did that song happen to say words I might have ate somewhere in it?"
Jessie nodded still staring at her hands in her lap as she twirl her ring on her finger.
"Oh Jessie, That song just came to me. It isn't about anyone!" Billie Joe said slightly relieved.
Suddenly Jessie felt incredibly guilty and stupid.
"Besides Jess, you would have known if there was ever a girl... Other than you." Billie Joe stopped, he hadn't meant for that last part to come out. They weren't even together, what a stupid thing to say.
Jessie's head snapped up at this, her eyes wide. As her eyes met Billie Joe's she noticed the nervousness behind them with a tinge of hope all the same. As Billie Joe stared into Jessie's tear filled eyes he couldn't help but feel the anxiety in his stomach rise. Then without realizing it Jess broke out into the biggest grin she could muster. Billie Joe felt a wave of relief wash over him as her smile seemed to grow brighter, bright enough to light up the entire room. Not thinking, Billie Joe wrapped his arms around Jessie's waist and pulled her close.
"You are so beautiful." He whispered as he nuzzled into her neck.
After a long time of having that floating feeling Jessie finally gathered up the courage to speak.
"Billie Joe?" She said quietly.
"Hmm?" He replied snuggling closer.
"I... I don't want to let you go." Jessie said reluctantly.
Billie Joe couldn't help but smile a little as he replied,
"Then don't."
Jessie sighed and hugged him closer.
"I'm not planning on it." she said laying her head on his shoulder.
"Good, because I'm never letting you go." Billie Joe whispered.
Jessie smiled as the one part of her that was on Billie's side all along was saying I told you so to the rest of her.
"What was her problem?" Mike said leaning back on the couch once more after moving to give Billie Joe room to sit.
