Childhood Sweetheart Punks, chapter 2

Over the next week, Becci received constant phone calls and gifts from Billie Joe. She woke up on the Monday to find a massive bouquet of black roses on her doorstep. The card read: 'One of my many talents.....looking forward to seeing yours. Here's my cell number, I'll call you soon so we can arrange a showcase. Billie xxx' This of course caused Becci to smirk, as in the brief time that she had talked to him, she had mentioned how black roses were her favourite flower. The sweet gesture almost won her over, but she knew that the only way to win the unspoken challenge that had been thrown down was to be aloof and untouchable.

On Tuesday, she got to sixth form to find a picture of her and Billie Joe that had been taken after Battle of the Bands with their arms wrapped around one another. It was a great photo, but what made it even better was the fact that it was blown up to poster size, and tacked onto the front classroom wall. The message in emerald green ink underneath read: 'A memory from the time I've known you, and hopefully the beginning of many more wonderful memories of us together.'

On Wednesday, she went home at the end of the day to find a platinum and leather bracelet sitting on her desk with an inscription on it. The inscription read: 'For my muse Princess Becci. Not all nice guys finish last.' Becci had grinned almost inanely as she recalled the events that had lead to her being dubbed Princess Becci. As for being called Billie's muse...well, she couldn't think of a nicer compliment. She was his inspiration?

*Flashback*
Billie Joe grinned at Becci and slipped an arm around her as she cracked up at Tre's tomato ketchup line. Her friends were gathered inside the rehearsal room in Becci and Sophie's small flat, beers and (in Becci and Sophie's case, excessive amounts of vodka) laughter making them high on their success. Naturally, they were all somewhat pissed, celebrating their win at the battle of the bands. A guy named Tristan from another band that had performed at the battle sat near Sophie, laughing with Jay and Craig while they all struggled to stay upright.

Becci spoke, slurring slightly. 'Billie Joe, you know you guys are like...... punk royalty, right?!' Billie Joe smirked, not as drunk as the others thought him to be at all, but immediately slurred back: 'Then you're my princess, 'cause you killed it tonight babe.' Even drunk, Becci recognised the compliment, and planted a kiss straight on a grinning Billie Joe's lips, saying afterwards: 'If I killed it darlin', then you send it straight to hell every time you play!'

*End Flashback*

Becci had the day off on Thursday from college since she had been dizzy and sick the night before, and she received an answerphone message that said, simply: 'Sorry to hear you're ill babe. If I could, I'd be right there to hold you in my arms and make you all better. Such as it is, you'll have to see what I sent you. Check under your bed.' With that, the message cut off, or so she thought. Leaving it switched on, she crawled out of bed feeling rather sick still, and lifted up the covers hanging over the edge of her bed. Then she let out a squeal of delight as she spotted what was underneath. Wrapped up in green ribbon, a brand new cell phone lay, with a note tucked around it. She pulled it out and read it: 'Because I'm missing you, whatever calls you make on this phone are already paid for. Consider it yours--CALL ME!!! Billie xxx'

On Friday, Becci was feeling a helluva lot better, but she still didn't call Billie Joe. Sophie chastised her friend daily now for being a tease. 'One phone call won't ruin your ice queen act you know! Look at all that the guy has done for you!! He's smitten....' and so it went on. More gifts and phone calls continued to arrive for the next few days, all contributing to the final breakdown of reason for Becci. She finally gave in, almost an entire week later at 1am on Saturday, and picked up her cell phone, only to find that it was already ringing. Somewhat puzzled, she answered it, and said: 'Hello?' rather quizzically, wondering who the hell could be calling her at this hour.

'Becci,' a familiar voice rasped, sounding incredibly miserable and yet relieved to talk to her. She felt her heart stop, as she replied: 'Billie Joe? Is that you?' not realising that there was the lack of interference in the reception that usually intruded rudely on transatlantic calls. 'Yeah, it is. I miss you.' Becci immediately felt incredibly guilty for not calling him, and then realised how good it felt to hear his voice. This realisation hit her like a smack in the face, and she reeled slightly, her senses going into overdrive. How was it possible that one person speaking could do that to her?

She swallowed the lump that had suddenly leapt into her throat, and said: 'I miss you.' It was then that she registered how the phone line was perfect. 'Erm, Billie Joe, where are you?' She could practically see him smirking, even though he still sounded like shit when he replied: 'Have a guess babe.'. It was then that she felt a tap on her shoulder. She froze for a few seconds, and then spun around to face...... Billie Joe.

His black hair was rumpled and messy, there were huge bags under his eyes and his shoulders were slumped. He looked emotionally and physically exhausted, but to Becci he had never looked so good. They stayed on the phone as Billie Joe said, his eyes upon her: 'Surprise.' With that, Becci dropped the phone and threw herself into his arms, kissing him soundly.
