Cat And Mouse, chapter 9
The detective looked at the body for a minute. "Cyanide pill... " he muttered. The woman next to him turned sadly towards him.
"Well, at least he died peacefully."
"Oh, heavens no!"
She looked at him, confused. "What do you mean?"
"He... choked on a cyanide pill."
"Oh my... "
"Mm, the irony is endless."
"I suppose... "
Amidst the somber scene, the two stood, still watching the body. Conversation had run out.
"Well, uh, Dr. Mishner, I suppose we ought to do something with this body."
"Leave that to the EMI's."
"EMT's?"
"Yes, that."
They stood in silence for a while longer. Dr. Mishner adjusted his hair, which was combed back. Using the reflection of a nearby broken mirror, he checked himself once, then gave a little wink.
"Uh, Dr. Mishner."
"Yes, Trixie?"
"I think your cell phone is going off."
Dr. Mishner looked down at his pocket and noticed that "The Morning After" was playing loudly. "Yes, I suppose it is."
"Are you going... to answer it?"
"Yes. I will."
The doctor walked over to the side of the room and flipped open the cell phone.
"Hello? Mm, mm, mm, I see, mm, alright." He hung up. "I'm going to need to get going. Something's come up."
"Must you leave so soon?"
"Well, Trixie. If it were up to me, I would stay. But the fates have handed me a... hand I cannot fold." He looked deep into her eyes and clasped her hand gently. "But I will be back."
He walked outside of the apartment and down the creaky stairs to outside, where several cars passed by. One stopped and pulled up next to him. "Leo Mishner?" The window rolled down.
"Yes, that's me."
"Uh, I'm here to pick you up. Y'know, for the kidnapping trail."
"Ah yes, I'm looking forward to that. Say, where's Bunny?'
"Back at the studio, we'll pick her up on our way out."
"Sounds good. What's your name, son?"
"Uh, Tom. Tom Porszick."
"Well, you know me. Let's drive."
"Well, at least he died peacefully."
"Oh, heavens no!"
