The Guy From The Mall, chapter 37
"I'm going to see Billie," you manage to say without looking Mikey in the eyes.
"I'm coming with you," he shouts after you, but you ignore him and walk on. All you can think of is Billie, lying there, god knows what's going on in his head.
"Hey guys." You sit in a chair next to Tre. Billie is awake, but you don't look at him, you're almost too scared to do it.
"Not got lover boy with you?" he snarls through gritted teeth. "Though I suppose he's at home getting ready to be the perfect father." Tears roll down your cheeks, and before Billie gets too stressed, Mike butts in.
"We heard." They all stare at you, waiting for you to explain yourself.
"I... I've lost the baby." Tre puts his arm round you.
"I'm really sorry to hear that, Billie didn't mean it, did you Bill?"
"No, I suppose I didn't." He's still pretty pissed off.
"I wish I'd never met Mikey. At least then, none of us would be in this mess. I wouldn't be depressed, and Billie wouldn't be here." You don't realize that Mikey is sat just outside the door. "Tre, Mike, can I just have some time, alone with Billie, please?"
"I dunno, what do you say Bill?"
"Fine."
For a minute or two neither of you speak. You end up breaking the silence. "I've really screwed up, haven't I?"
"You could say that."
"I wish I could go back, and change things. I wish I were still with you. I wish I'd never met Mikey. And I wish it were me in that bed, not you." Billie looks at the floor, avoiding your gaze.
"I wish that too. I wish this whole mess had never happened. And yes, I wish we were still together. I wish that creep had never been born."
Meanwhile, Mikey is sitting outside, crying his eyes out over you. Each word you say cuts into him like a knife. He gets up and walks into the room where you are sat next to Billie Joe. "I don't think I want this anymore. You can stay at my place until tomorrow, then I think you should leave. Sorry."
"Mikey, please -"
"I've heard enough to know when I'm not wanted. I thought you loved me."
"I did...I do...Look at what this has caused. Our whole relationship has been selfish, I've lost three of the best friends I've ever had, I've put one of them in hospital. I've lost a baby which could have been Billie's, and none of it has made me happy. I doubt that it's made you happy." You all sit in silence for a while.
"So...so that's it? It's over, just like that?"
"Yeah, I guess it is. Go home Mikey. I'm not worth you wasting your time over."
As Mikey leaves, Billie Joe finally plucks up the courage to look you in the eyes.
"If I were to say I love you now, would you promise me that nothing like this will ever happen again. Would you promise to love me back?" The thought of you and Billie back together again whirls round in you head. "Would you promise never to see that man again?" You both sit in silence again, before you give him your answer...
