1988, chapter 10
Well, as soon as the summer started, it ended. Through the summer Maria had of course moved so herself and her brother were starting at a new school. Maria had talked her mum into letting herself go to Billie Joe's and Mike's school as long as Jake did too. Her sister wanted to continue at her previous school after making a big song and dance about having to start at a new school when her 'life' was at that her old school; meaning her quarter back boyfriend was still there. On the first day back, Billie Joe had offered Maria a ride to school, which she accepted.

The night before school was to start, Billie Joe took his sister's alarm clock from her room (she'd moved out years ago) and set it next to his bed; he was not going to be late. He set it at 6am and climbed into bed.
The alarm went off and Billie Joe woke up with a stretch and fumbled around for the snooze button, he found it and slammed his hand down. He got up and got changed, then stuffed what he hoped was school stuff in his backpack and barged into the kitchen, threw his bag down and made toast. The toast popped and he looked around for what he wanted. "Damn. No peanut butter!". He ate his plain toast quickly and waited till it was time to pick Maria up. He had no idea where Mike was right now and he didn't really care. He looked at the clock. It was 7:45am, "Time to go". He grabbed his backpack, swung it onto his back with a 'thud', found his mum's car keys and walked out of the house. He rang the doorbell at Maria's and waited... until Jake swung open the door, which made Billie Joe jump.
"What is it punk?" Jake smirked.
"Is Maria ready to go?" Billie Joe smiled.
"Maria already left with that tall guy."
"Mike?" he felt his heart sink, but continued his smile even though his heart wasn't in it.
"Yeah... that's it, can you give me a ride? I don't really want to walk and I don't actually know where this new school is."
"Um, sure," and Jake stepped out of the door grabbing his backpack on the way. Billie Joe sat in the driver's seat as Jake sat down in the passenger seat, 'Why would Mike do this to me, he knows how I feel?' he thought and reversed out of his drive way.
