1988, chapter 3
'Should I go help her?' Billie Joe thought to himself, 'might as well' . He stood up, looked over at Mike and Al who were still laughing. Billie Joe walked over to her; he could hear Mike and Al wolf-whistling in the background, so he just rolled his eyes.
He tapped her on the shoulder, she jumped
"FUCK OFF JAKE!" she screamed and turned around "Oh sorry! I thought you were my brother, sorry"
They both stood there silent. 'What should I say? What should I say?' was going over and over again in Billie Joe's head, before he finally rounded up a
"You like 'Operation Ivy?"
"Umm, yep"
"Cool"
They both stood there again this time seeming like 10 minutes
"Need some help?"
"Really? Umm I guess?" Maria picked up her guitar case, "Could you help me with my amps?"
"Sure" He picked up the amp and wriggled it under his arm "You play?"
"Not well, you're really good though."
Billie Joe couldn't help but smile. He followed her to her room.
"My names Billie Joe by the way, but you can call me Bill"
He placed the amp down
"Ok Bill, my names Maria and you can call me Maria"
Billie Joe laughed
"That's a pretty name, Maria"
This time Maria laughed
"No, it's not" and they walked back outside.
"You sure you wanna help me?"
"Yeah the other guys are being really stupid right now" and he turned and glared at them.
"Your band?" Maria asked
"Yeah"
They both picked up boxes marked 'Maria, don't touch Jake or I will KILL YOU!'
"What's your band's name?"
"Sweet Children, I know it's lame but I don't care"
"Good on ya".
They finished with the boxes and Billie Joe asked Maria if she wanted to hear them play
"Sure!" she replied.
They walked over to Billie Joe's garage, and straight away Mike came up to her.
"Hey Maria!" shouted Mike "How you going?"
"Mike? ... Just moved here"
Billie Joe was intensely puzzled. 'Mike knew her?'
"Cool"
"Not really". Al got up from behind the drum kit
"Hi, I'm Al"
"I'm Maria" they shoke hands
"You like 'Operation Ivy'?"
"Obviously"
"There a heck of a good band".
'Sweet Children' played a couple of songs for Maria before Al had to go. After he'd gone Billie Joe, Maria and Mike started talking.
"So Maria how's Tre?"
'Fuck she's Tre's girlfriend!' Billie Joe thought to himself
"Ok I guess" they kept talking until they heard Maria's stepdad sing out her name.
"Your dad?" asked Mike
"Eww, No stepdad!"
She got up and ran back to her house.
"Bye guys!"
"Bye Maria!" they called back.
Billie Joe turned to Mike
"Is Tre her boyfriend?"
"No" Mike answered "They're like best friends or something"
"Oh, ok"
"You like her Bill?"
"Meh... she's cute, funny, and thank god she doesn't like Madonna!" Mike laughed at Billie Joes joke.
"You do like her" Mike said while closing the garage door and walked inside leaving Billie Joe alone, sitting on the old sofa. He lay down.
"Yeah, I guess I do like her" he whispered staring at the garage roof.
