Face To Face, chapter 1

pt 3

She looks up at you and hate fills her eyes. You open your mouth to speak but get hit hard in the face with what you can only assume, was a brick.
"Fuck!" your nose starts bleeding. "What the fuck was that for?" She doesn't answer, but went to close the door.
"Adrienne, wait!" You put your hand on the frame, but she slams the door anyway.
"FUCK!" You wrench your hand from between the door and the frame. It's throbbing with pain. People are starting to look out of their doors to see what's going on. You try to act as if nothing's wrong. You look back at Adrienne. She's staring at your hand with what seemed to be sympathy, but the moment you catch her eye she glares darkly at you.
"What the fuck do YOU want? If you've changed your mind about signing the papers, it's too late."
You decide not to say you knew it was too late. At the moment you didn't feel like getting hit in the face again.
"We need to talk... away from prying eyes." You glance down the hall at the faces peering out at you. Adrienne shoots another dirty look at you, then reluctantly stands aside to let you in.
You and Adrienne sit down on the couch. She opens her mouth to start bitching at you for God knows what; but you cut her off.
"I'm sorry that we couldn't do this your way," you say apologetically, "but I want to help. I'll take you to clinics and classes and everything else. I'll pay for them too. Just don't try killing this baby. Let it live, and when it's born, if you don't want it fine. We'll find a good home for it." She looks at you; searching your eyes, for what you don't know.
"What if... what if I want to keep it when it's born?"
Your heart skips a beat. Is she agreeing?
"Then I'll help you to raise it. I'll change diapers, get up at 4 in the morning, whatever."
"And you're sure that 5 months from now, you will keep that promise? You won't run away? You're going to be by my side through everything that happens?"
"Of course! Even though this wasn't planned, it's going to be the greatest thing that ever happens to us."
"I can't do this alone, Billie Joe."
"You don't have to." You reply softly. You lean over and pull her into a quick hug. She doesn't push away. She looks at you and you see a tiny smile flicker across her face.
"I'm not sure why, but I believe you. I trust you, and that's a lot coming from me. Don't blow this, OK?"
"OK!"
