Face To Face, chapter 1
Part 4
"This is killing me! If we don't get called in the next 5 minutes, I'm going to burst!" Adrienne and you are in the waiting room at her doctors' office waiting, for her ultrasound appointment. She gets up.
"I can't wait any longer, I have to go!" She's half way to the bathroom when the doctor calls "Adrienne?" She turns in mid step and walks towards the doctor. You get up.
"Do you want me to come with you?" You ask.
"That's why you came isn't it? To be here for me?" She walks into the examination room and you follow.
"Adrienne, if you could change into a gown and sit on the examination table?" the doctor asks her. Then she turns to you. "If you could take a seat at the head of the table, Mr.... ?"
"Billie Joe Armstrong." You reply and hold out your hand. But she only smirks and turns away. You know she is silently laughing at your name. You go and sit in the chair as Adrienne comes out from behind the screen and sits on the table.
The doctor goes through the procedure of an ultrasound, then pulls over the equipment and begins. When she finds the baby, she walks over to the TV screen and points it out.
"See? There are the heads, the arms and legs... "
You blink. Did she just say HEADS? Adrienne seemed to be thinking along the same lines as you because she asked,
"Excuse me, Dr. Flinn? Did you just say heads? As in two of them? What kind of deformity does my baby have?!?"
The doctor laughs as if Adrienne had just told a joke. "Oh, there's no deformities, nit to worry. There is two heads, but there are two bodies attached to the heads. Didn't you know that it was twins?"
You're glad you are sitting, or else you would of fainted. You can hear Adrienne muttering beside you, "Oh my god, oh my god... "
"I can't believe you didn't know! The very first ultrasound should have told you that." Says Dr. Flinn.
"This IS our very first ultrasound." Adrienne says.
"I can't believe this! Never in my 18 years as a doctor has this happened. You should have had one at around week 8. What were you doing that you didn't know about this?"
"We had... other things occupying us." You answer.
"Oh, I see." the smirk has returned to her face. "Well I'll give you some privacy, you obviously need to talk about some stuff." She leaves you and Adrienne and goes out into the waiting room.
After a few minutes you break the thoughtful silence.
"Well?" you ask
"Well what Billie? I was freaking out about one fucking baby, but two? I don't know if I can take it."
You bury your face in your hands. "I know, Adrienne, I know... "
She smiles. "We are going to have our hands so fucking full. You up for a challenge?"
It takes you by surprise that she is being positive about the whole situation for once.
"Always," you reply. Hesitating, you add, "Adrienne? Do you want to get something to eat after? I'm starving."
"Hell ya! Do you know anywhere that serves pickles? I'm craving them." she rubs her stomach, "now, where's that bloody doctor? I want to get out of this place. Oh, and Billie? My friends call me Adie."
