Face To Face, chapter 1

Part 5
Lunch with Adie was good. Unfortunately, she broke your bank, as you didn't know how much a pregnant woman eats. And unfortunately, she hadn't realized that you were trying to start things up with her. You keep thinking to yourself, 'I have to talk to her about this, we're having twins together for Christ sakes!' but you can never catch her alone it seems. Either you're at your place and Mike and Tre are constantly walking in and out; or you're at her place, and her roommate, Alicia, doesn't ever seem to leave. If you do get a chance to be alone with her, you're either interrupted, or doing something that involves concentration, like prenatal classes, which you started taking a week ago. Finally one day you get your chance. You and Adie are at her house for lunch, and her roommate is visiting her relatives.
"Adie, can I ask you something?"
"You just did, but shoot." She says between bites of turkey sandwich.
"Do you think... do you think we could take a stab at dating? I mean, I think it could work! We get along well together now that we know each other, don't you think?"
She swallows the last of her sandwich and surveys you. For a minute, the longest minute of your life she says nothing.
"Don't think I haven't thought about us like that because I have. But there are two main reasons why it would be a bad idea. The first one being that if we had an ugly breakup, it could jeopardize our children's lives.
"That's understandable. And the second reason?" you say. Trying hard not to sound too hurt.
Adrienne takes a deep breath, and replies.
"I'm at a difficult point in my life. I have feelings for you. I know I do. But I have equal feelings for someone else, and we're already together."
"How come I haven't heard or seen anything of him?" you ask, "maybe I should meet him-"
She cuts you off. What she says is so quiet you have to lean forward to hear her.
"Her," she breaths, "not a him, a her."
