How I Went Out Of My Way For Green Day, chapter 1
At 2am I reluctantly opened my latin book to start the 2 page translation about roman roads. After translating the first word "The", it reminded me that I hadn't updated my xanga in over 24 hours so i casually pushed the latin book off my desk and opened up my spanking new laptop.
After being greeted by my lovely Green Day desktop, I hurried myself online and was quickly drawn away from the fascinating online invention that is livejournal by my friend mitchell's annoying AOL sound.
"JACKY!!!" was the first word that popped up. 'This must be important I thought'
"MITCHELL!!!" I quickly typed back.
"3 words..." he typed in his ugly ugly font. (no, but I love mitchell)
"What?" i asked.
"Free.... green.... day.... show"
Despite the fact that this was four words I still fell back in my chair from excitement.
"When? where? how?????" was my quick response after I recovered from my episode.
"I'm not sure but you have to register to get wristbands at J&R music world"
He sent me the link and I quickly filled out all the information praying to god that
wristbands were still available. Thankfully they were.
Wow. wow. wow....WOW.
Without thanks or regards to Mitchell, or without finishing my latin homework, I floated off to bed and had very vivid dreams of Green Day.
The next day after being brutally crucified by Mitchell for not saying 'thank you', I swarmed him with hugs and praised him day in and day out.
The free show would be held between church street and broadway on park place in downtown manhattan about a block from J&R music world on september 22nd 2004. since i live in queens it wouldn't be that hard to get to. It was also right after the Irving Plaza cd release party. (which sold out 10 seconds after tickets went on sale.)
A few days later I got a call from my good friend Matt telling me (with much enthusiasm) about how he just registered for a wristband for a free Green Day show held by J&R. After he quit rambling and yelling at me to go online as fast as I could I explained to him that I registered about 2 hours after word got out about the free show.
"Oh" he said.
Unfortunately for us, even if you registered for a free wristband you would have to come pick it up at J&R at 10am. I decided i would go with Matt and just to ensure that we were gaurenteed a wristband, we got there a 6:45 in the morning.
When we first got there, there was about 20-25 people in front of us. They're were barricades set up but only about two and we were at the end of the second one. Even though it was mid-september at the time the temperature was about 45 degrees and of course, we were on the side of the street without sunlight. Lucky me that i had my paper thin rancid hoodie to keep me nice and cozy -_-
For approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes me and matt waited (along with the friends we had made who were in front of us in the line) the line literally went around the block. At about 9am the guy came out and told us...'You know, if you registered you're gauranteed a wristband -_- but what the hell, we'd been waiting here this long might as well stay for the long run.
My friend Mitchell with a few of his friend showed up later (around the block) at about 9:00 but no way in hell was he cutting in front of us (since already 15 people had done so to us)
And finally at 10 o'clock we were let inside to the greeting of the new Green Day CD as we got our bright orange wristbands, which we wore, showered with, and surgically attached to our skin to ensure its safety until the show a week from then.
>>> the actual show chapter is next (i wouldn't leave y'all hanging with just a story about orange wristbands now would i?)
