To The End, chapter 2

BILLIE'S POEM....

Veronica turned on the radio in her room and turned it up slightly. It was natural for her to turn on music whenever something went wrong. And something really went wrong that night.

She layed over her covers, staring at the ceiling, and tried as hard as her brain would allow to forget what had happened that night. She tried to wash away all the feelings, pain, and memories. It was no use. This would be harder to forget than she thougt.

Just as she was begininng to become consumed in the music, the front door opened. 'Oh, shit' she thought bitterly. She quickly got up and walked to her dresser and pulled out a longsleeve ZZ TOP shirt. She used it to replace her pink tee so that nothing would be visible.

She examined her face in the full mirror standing kiddy corner of her room. The temporary red tatto of Eric's hand from the final slap was gone, which made her relieved. She went over to her door and went in the hallway, down the stairs, and into the kitchen where Billie Joe was going through the refridgerator.

"Hey, Veronica," he said, not turning his attention away.
"Hey, Billie," she said as cheerfully as she could.
"What's up?"
"Nothing much," she lied.
"OK," he said sounding bored.

Veronica went to the table and pulled out a chair and sat down. Billie Joe did the same but with a Coke-a-Cola in his hand.

"So how was band practice?" Veronica asked, trying to get a conversation started.
"It went good. I wrote you a poem. I guess it could be a song, but it's kinda short, so I'm just saying it's a poem."
"Can I read it now?"
"It's not good enough. Yet," he said, smirking and opening his soda.
"What's it about?"
"You and me. I mean, our friendship. Not, ya know. Anything else. Cuz, we're just-"
"Billie," Veronica cut him off. "You're rambling."

He blushed slightly. "Sorry," he said. "Nothing to apalogize for," she assured him. He smiled and said," Do you wanna come hang out in my room?" Veronica accepted, even though it was 10:15 and she was exausted.

"C'mon, then." Billie Joe led the way up the stairs and down the hall to his room. He opened the door and stood aside to allow Veronica to enter first. "Oh, what a gentleman," Veronica said smiling. Billie nodded and followed her in.

The smell of cigarette smoke and other random things lingered in the air. Billie Joe walked over to his bed and threw his notebook on it. 'Probably has the poem in it' Veronica thought to herself.

Veronica cautiously walked over to Billie Joe's chair that sat in front of his desk. She was being careful not to step on any junk or clothes.

Veronica and Billie Joe sat talking for a good 10 minutes before Billie said," One sec. I'll be right back," and left the room. Veronica made a bee-line for the notebook and flipped it open to a marked page.

It read:

You stuck with me,
So I'll stick with you.
We've had many hardships,
Yet we always pull through.

If I would begin to fall apart,
You'd be there to fix me.
We've been best friends for so long,
You give me a taste
Of being free

Free to make my own choices,
Free to try something new.
Free to just be myself,
Free to be with you.

I'll be there for you,
Till the day of my death.
Best friends forever,
Till my very last breath.
