She, chapter 2

Gianna rammed her foot down on the accelerator, time driving was time wasted. It was six miles to Rachel's house and at this speed it wouldn't take too long to get there. Her mind began to wander as she drove along the familiar road, taking her mind back to the very thing she was escaping and her hatred for him. If only Colm would let her be twenty one, instead of trying to make her into a carbon copy of what he was. It was never going to happen, how the hell could she live up to his perfect expectations. The more she thought about her situation, the angrier she became and the frustration built up. Furiously she drove faster and faster, thoughts and emotions rushing through her head. She couldn't even wonder why she was with Colm, that was out of her hands. It wasn't even as if she had a choice about it. After all, she owed Colm.

The corner came too quickly, she should have known this road, the amount of times she had driven along here. Taking the bend at seventy miles an hour she slammed her foot onto the brake to turn. The steering wheel stuck fast, locking the wheels at an angle and sending the car into a spin across the road. Gianna desperately tried to regain control, the screeching of the back tyres the only sound in her ears. Spinning around twice, the car shot backwards, landing and bumping three times before coming to rest in a field. Gianna felt her head bang against the window and tried to keep focused as her eyes grew heavy. This is it, she thought, I'm gonna die, this is history repeating itself. Her head throbbed and she could taste blood. Everything went black.

Billie Joe was pissed off, he had been pissed off at the beginning of the day but now as if to make things worse he was stuck on this fucking road that never seemed to end. He still walked on ahead of Mike and Tre, he needed some time to think. The faint buzz of his mobile phone put an end to that and he was tempted to ignore it , after all, he already knew exactly who it would be. It really didn't seem like the right time for yet another argument with Adrienne, she had already called three times that morning. In the end his mind was made for him as the distant sound of screeching of tyres made him jump and look up. A green convertible lurched towards him, turned wildly and skidded out of view.
"Shit!" He stopped for a moment.

"What the fuck was that?" Mike called out, running to catch him up.
Following the tyre marks on the road it was pretty easy to see where it had eventually landed. They kept their distance, standing at the edge of the field, not really knowing what to do next. There didn't seem to be any movement and all was silent apart from the constant low hum of the engine which was still running.
"Go see who's in there. " Mike insisted, shoving Billie Joe in the direction of the car.

"No way, it might blow up."

"Or they might all be dead anyway." Tre added, as he finally caught up with them.

"Oh I'll go then." Billie Joe sighed eventually, realising that no one else was going to. He managed to get through the brambles that twisted and wound into knots with their thorns that still managed to stab through his jeans. The drivers side window was smashed, the air was smoky inside the car but he could just about make out a figure. A girl lay slumped over the steering wheel, her head turned towards him although her eyes were shut. Her long blonde hair fell in sticky strands over her cheek, matted with blood which was still pouring from a cut on her forehead. Slowly, and trying not to panic he reached in and switched off the engine.
"Will you two get over here and help me!"
Mike and Tre hurried over and both peered in through the window.

"Is she dead?"

"Shut up Tre and do something useful, like help get this door open."
Together they managed to force the door open, the hinges had buckled slightly so that it could not open to the full amount.

"Do we move her, or not?" Billie Joe looked up at Mike, who was stood leaning on the door frame.

"How the hell should I know, I'm not a paramedic!"
They continued discussing the issue while Tre grabbed a bag that was lying on the back seat. It was a black pvc thing with a picture of a vampire crudely drawn in highlighter pen. Searching through the make up, tissues, receipts and other random items that were stuffed in the bag he found a wallet.

"Hey, I've found her id card. Her name's Gianna Tate."

"Well at lest we know her name now, that's a start." Billie Joe tried nudging Gianna, she seemed completely still.
"Gianna, Gianna wake up."
He started to panic, there didn't appear to be any signs of life.
"What if she's dead, has she got a pulse?"
Mike reached over to take hold of her limp wrist which still clung to the steering wheel.
"Yeah I think so." He replied after a moment.

"Why won't she wake up?" Tre asked, concerned by now.

"I don't know, maybe we should call an ambulance or something."

Gianna stirred, she couldn't open her eyes, they felt heavy and dull. Her mouth was dry, and she found it hard to form words. She imagined she was either dead or on the way to being dead, she had the sensation of people talking around her and tried in vain to pull her mind back to some sort of reality. One thing was for sure, she had heard the mention of ambulance, which probably meant that she was still in the land of the living.

"No" She managed to croak, opening her eyes for a second before drifting off again. Mike, Tre and Billie Joe had crowded around her, thinking she was going to wake up. They weren't exactly sure of what to do next, it wasn't the sort of situation they had found themselves in before.

"I think we have to keep her conscious, Tre phone an ambulance." Mike decided. Tre got out his phone and started dialling.
"Oh and while you're at it, call Jason again and get him to come pick us up."

Tre disappeared with the phone to call for help. Billie Joe held Gianna's cold hand and stroked her cheek to try to wake her, in the hope that the ambulance arrived up in time.
