Hitchin A Ride, chapter 33
When Billie Joe's and Amy's kids moved out of the apartment, they finally had enough money to get their own house.
Billie Joe, was sitting in his living room, (many years later) with his three grandchildren, telling them about his life. As he told them stories from the past, he thought about how different his life couldve been. He thought about how before he met Amy, he was really starting to like Adrienne, and if he never met Amy, he probably wouldve asked Adrienne out. And he wondered how Adrienne was doing, because he hadnt seen or heard from her for so many years now. And he wondered about if the band never broke up, maybe someday they couldve gotten famous, and people everywhere would hear their music, and he wouldve had more money to care for his famliy. And then he thought back to the fisrt night he stayed with Amy, and he asked if he would sleep with her. He remembered the sparkel in her blue eyes looking sweetly at him, but he couldve said no.
Later that night, after all his grandchildren went home, and Amy went to bed he went in the basement, and took out a photo album. There were pictures of them all at the apartment when they were younger, and Adrienne was in a few of them. He never realized how much he loved her until now, but now is too late. He moved away some boxes and found the guitar he bought for Amy, lying in the corner covered in dust and cob webs. A tear came down from his eye. Then he looked over his shoulder and saw the acoustic guitar he played Good Riddance on for her, but also took her advice, and never played that song with the band, and never recorded it. He blew the dust off it and started playing Good Riddance, he wiped the tear from his eye and tryed to sing, though he couldnt sing anymore, his voice wasnt strong enough. He put the guitar back when he heard Amy coming down the stairs.
"Honey, what are you doing down here so late?" she asked sweetly, with a confused look on her face.
"Just trying to recover something I lost." he said sadly as he walked up the stairs slowly.
