Take Me Away To Paradise..., chapter 4
I walked through the front door of my apartment, mentally and physically exhausted. Being a chef isn't as easy as it seems. I collapsed on the couch, wanting to do nothing more than lie there for the remainder of the night. Billie Joe was still on my mind. It had been almost a week and he hadn't called back. Figures. Not that I was mad at him or anything... I mean, what did I expect? He's practically a fucking celebrity, for Christ's sakes.
I saw the flashing red light on my phone, indicating I had messages. Sighing, I punched the Play button, hoping it wasn't one of my friends forcing me into another party. That would be practically the same as re-living this past week. The first message was from Alex:
"Hey, it's Alex. We're all going out tomorrow for dinner, maybe you want to come? Um... just letting you know... we'll kind of all... have dates. So... I don't know if you still want to come... it's just we haven't seen you in a while. So, call me back, or whatever. Later."
I groaned. So I'd have to go to dinner tomorrow with my friends and their dates. And I was dateless. I wasn't surprised Alex had gone straight to the assumption Billie Joe still hadn't called me. Well, she didn't even know my secret guy was Billie Joe... the next message started to play. It was from Sam.
"What's up, Katie? We haven't heard from you in a while. What's going on, girl? Had your mystery guy called you back? At least come with us to dinner tomorrow. I don't know if Alex called you already, but we're all going to have dates, so... yeah. Call me. Bye."
I sighed and rubbed my fingers on my temples. One thing I could never do was say No to my friends. I just never had the courage. The next message began to play, and it made me sit up so fast I got a head rush.
"Hey Katie, its Billie Joe. Sorry I didn't call you right away. We were busy. Anyways, maybe you want to get dinner or something tomorrow night? Call me... my number's 815-2725. See ya."
My heart was beating so fast I thought I'd explode. He called me... he really called me! He called me and asked me to dinner... oh, my God. Suddenly the impact of everything—the fact that I was going to go on a date with THE Billie Joe Armstrong—was all too much. I had to sit down again, feeling dizzy.
Slowly, I took a few deep breaths. First of all, I felt like my friends had to know about him. Of course, they'd probably go crazy when they found out. And be proud of me—probably. Then it hit me. I could bring him to dinner with my friends tomorrow! It was perfect. They'd find out there...
I picked up the phone and dialed his number. "Hello?" His voice made my heart skip a beat.
"Hey... Billie Joe, it's Katie... "
"Oh, hey! So, you got my call, then," He said. I could practically see him smiling at the other end.
"Yeah. The thing is, I'd love to go to dinner, but I kind of had plans... "
"Oh." I could sense the disappointment in his voice—which, I predicted, was a good thing.
"But, I'm actually going to dinner with my friends, so you could join us." I asked hopefully.
"Yeah, sure, that'd be great. Where are we going?"
Oh shit. It suddenly occurred to me that I had no idea where we were eating. I panicked and began to do that stupid stuttering thing.
"Uh... I... uh... can I call you back?"
He laughed. "Yeah, sure. Bye." And he hung up.
My hands were still shaking as I dialed Alex's number. Alex was probably my best friend out of all my friends. Sometimes, though, she'd get over protective or even too clingy. Other than that, she was great. But her flaws made me wonder if she'd really like it that Billie Joe was my date...
"Hey, Alex, it's Katie." I said.
"Hey, what's up?"
"I can make dinner tomorrow."
"Well, we're all gonna have dates... " She said quietly.
"What makes you think I won't have a date?" I shot back. There was a silence on the other line. "We're going to that Italian place on third. Tell... whoever your date is... it's casual attire. Be there at 7." I rolled my eyes at the way she said 'casual attire'. Alex was practically the opposite of everything that I was.
"Great, thanks. See you tomorrow." I said. Then I hung up the phone and re-dialed Billie Joe's number.
"Hey... Katie?" He asked.
"Yeah, it's me. We're going to that Italian place on third. It's casual." I added.
"Great. What time do you want me to pick you up?" He asked. My heart fluttered. He was picking me up!
"6:50 OK?" I replied casually.
"Great... oh shit. Uh, the thing is, my car broke down, so... is it OK if we have my driver pick us up?" He asked. Was it OK?! I wanted to scream. OF COURSE! Who cared about the car?
"Yeah, of course." I was grinning from ear-to-ear by now.
"Cool. So I'll see you tomorrow." He said.
"OK. Bye."
I hung up the phone. It was official. I was going on a date with Billie Joe Armstrong!
