American Idiot: The Story, chapter 3

The voice sounded like as if it had a sore throat and had trouble talking, but they way it talked, I could tell it was just fine. I turned my head in every direction. I couldn't really see where it was coming from. I was pretty freaked out now, so I called back to the voice...

"Where are you?"

"I'm right here"

That didn't make any sense. "Where is here?" Maybe I was just going crazy.

"No Jesus, your not crazy. You can't see me, because I'm you"

This guy was saying he was me...And how did he know my name and what I was thinking? That was really freaky.

"What? How could you be me?"

"My name is St. Jimmy. I'm not a real living person. I'm just in your mind. You said you needed help to find a way outta your old home, so now I'm here to help. I'm just a figment of you father's rage and your mother's love."

St. Jimmy? Was this guy crazy? Or was I the crazy one? I looked around again, but I still didn't see anyone. He was right, I needed help, and there was no onle else. So maybe, I had to trust that guy...

"Okay, St. Jimmy. How are you going to help me?" I asked him, getting up.

"I'm gonna find you a place to stay, and get you lots of friends....that place is gonna have everything you've always wanted. No rules, no one telling you what to do and much more."

"So, where is this place?"

"We're gonna look around"

"I've been doing that for the past few weeks! It doesn't look like anyone will accept me..."

"Of course they will. Your just not tough enough, you will be one day, so don't worry."

"Okay.."

So I started walking again, and I was realising that St. Jimmy really was a part of me. No one was walking with me. But I could still hear him telling me things. So, it looks like I really did create St. Jimmy, and he is a figment of my father's rage and my mother's love. I see this place now, it's like some kind of small abandoned building, I can hear laughter going on inside. I think I passed this place before. I wanted to go in, but something told me I couldn't.

"Why are you known as St. Jimmy?"

"I'm the patron saint of the denial, that's why."

"Do you always do what you want?"

"Yup. all the time. I'm not scared of anyone or anything. I'll do whatever I feel like."

My name is Jimmy and you better not wear it out,
Suicide commando that your momma talked about.
King of the 40 thieves, and I'm here to represent,
The needle in the vein of the establishment.

I'm the patron saint of the denial,
With an angel face and a taste for suicidal!

Are you talking to me?
I'll give you something to cry about!
ST. JIMMY!

"How about here?" I asked Jimmy

"Is this where you wanna live?" he asked

"Yeah. This place looks great."

"Okay then, walk up to the door, knock on it, and let me do the talking."

"Alright"

I don't know what's going to happen. I walked up to the door and I knocked on it three times. About thirty seconds later, a guy answered it. He was just as tall as me, probably my age and he had a cigarette in his hand.

"Yeah?" the guy said

I was just about to answer him, when I felt I couldn't speak. Instead, Jimmy took over.

"I'm looking for a place to stay."

Jimmy said that so confiidently, I mean, it's not like I'm scared, it's just I've never done this before. Jimmy acts like he does it everyday.

"What's your name?" the guys asked

"It's Jesus, Jesus of Suburbia." Jimmy answered

"Well Jesus, why did you come here?"

"I already said it"

"Right, a place to stay. I still have some space so, I guess I could give you a room, because you look lost and everything. Here, come in"

"Thanks"

"Welcome to paradise" he said. The guy let me in and then what I saw made me knew I had come to the right place. The bottom floor was pretty big. There were a lot of people and most of them were smoking, drinking, getting stoned, or watching TV. The guy led us to the upstairs which was also pretty big. There were different rooms, with peeling numbers on the doors. The guy led us to room 12, which had a bed, a small desk, a mirror and a small closet.

"Your free to do whatever you like in this room, downstairs, outside or in the back. I always bring back food and shit like that because your not the only one who lives here. You can go to bed anywhere in this buliding at anytime. Get up at anytime and do absulutley anything you want."

"Alright"

"Any questions?"

"Yeah, what's your name? And where did you find this place?"

"Call me Tunny. I sort of started this place with a few other friends. People just come here during the day and at night, to do whatever they want. Some people live here, like you, becuase they have no where to go. But most have a home. And your gonna have to pay rent. It's about $100 a month. For the first three months, you won't have to pay cuz your new, but then every last day of the month, you come and see me. Now I'll be back in 5 minutes, to make you meet all of my friends and then you can smoke and drink with us."

Tunny closed the door and left me standing there with no bags to put away. That was the best place that I've ever been to. I could do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted to. That place rocked. I moved over to the bed and sat down.

"Thanks Jimmy"

"No problem Jesus. Now I bet your new to the smoking thing right?"

"No, I smoke all the time."

"Good. But still, when Tunny brings you down there. I'll do everything. But if they ask you about yourself, I'll leave it up to you."

"Okay."

"So what do you think of the place?"

"It's great"

"Glad you like it."

"Yeah.."

Just then there was a knock at the door. I answered it and Tunny was standing there.

"Ready?" he asked

"Yeah" Jimmy answered for me

We walked downstairs and I noticed some people left. We walked to this corner and I saw two other guys smoking and drinking.

"Okay guys, this is Jesus Of Suburbia" Tunny anounced

"Hey Jesus" one guy said

"He's new, so we're gonna have to teach him the ways of our life."

"Yeah, alright!" another guy said.

"Okay Jesus, come and sit over here, and we'll learn about each other." Tunny said.

I walked over to the seat next to him and took the cigarette he was holding out for me.

"So, what kind of a name is Jesus?" Tunny asked me.

Jimmy left it up to me to answer.

"My dad gave it to me. He likes the name for some reason."

"So, how come you decided to leave your home?"

"It's just so fucked, ya know? My dad died when I was ten and then my mom married some son of a bitch, Brad. I hate him. Things just weren't the same after she married him. And as I got older I realized more and more how bad life had gotten for me. So I decided to leave."

"That's great. I left home a long time ago because my parents were fucked up drunks. They always got into fights and were always yelling. I couldn't take it, so I left." Said Tunny "My friends here are the same. We kind of came together and started this place. We call ourselves 'The Underbelly'. I'm so glad I left. I've never had this much fun in my life."

"So what do you guys do all day?"

"Same thing we're doing right now. Smoke, get high, drink, whatever we want."

"Sounds cool"

"Oh, yeah, sorry I forgot to introduce you to my friends. This is Jaze."

"Hey Jaze" I said shaking his hand.

"'Ello mate" he said. He had an Australian accent

"How come your here?" I asked him

"I lived with me dad, after me mum died when I was eight. He never took care of me, just got drunk and high all day long. Luckily, I knew Tunny from the 5th grade and we went to the same high school. Then we started this place up together. And if your wonderin' about the accent, me mum was Australian."

"Wow"

"This is Dizz" said Tunny

"Hey Dizz"

"Hey Jesus. The same thing as Jaze happened to me. 'Cept my mom didn't die. I started this place with Tunny and Jaze too."

"I have no idea where my other friends are. But you'll meet them later. So anyway Jesus, want me to show you around?"

"Sure." I felt pretty tired, even though I didn't really do anything. I saw a clock and that read 11:30 pm. It was pretty early to be going to bed, but I really thought I should, I had a long day.

"This is what we call 'The Square'. It's called that cuz it's a huge square. People watch TV, and just talk and stuff here." We started to walk into this room. It was smaller and it didn't have many people in it. "This is a room. I don't what people do in here. I don't know what it's called. It's just a room. Come in here anytime if you want to." I followed Tunny to the upstairs. "Okay, as you know, your room number 12. your next to a guy named Kaibe and next to another guy named Nige. They're pretty cool, I think you'll like them. Down the hall to your right is the bathroom. It's usually clean and if it's not, there's one downstairs too. Any questions?"

"Uh...no. Actually, I think I'm gonna go to bed now. Really tired. Long Day."

"Yeah I get it. See ya later" said Tunny, and he went downstairs.

Man, was I tired. I let out a huge yawn and walk into my room. I really loved that place. It was great. I decided to see how I look in the mirror. Probably a mess. I saw that my eyes had dark circles under them and I looked pretty tired. Just then Jimmy started talking...

"Hey Jesus. How are you doing?"

"Great, I love this place. I'm glad you came along"

"Glad you thought of me"

"Yeah, me too...." I stared into the mirror. It's strange because, I had control over my body, but Jimmy's voice just came out. It's not like he took over me, I could still walk and think for myself, but Jimmy did all the talking.

"You okay Jesus?"

"Yeah,. Just thinking, Jimmy. Goodnight"

I slumped onto my bed, I had no other clothes to change into. I would go buy some the next day. As I closed my eyes, I knew everything would be alright.
