Knowledge, chapter 1

"Joey, wake up! Time for school!" Adrienne shook Joey out of his sleep.
"Ungh... ." Joey groaned and sat up in his bed, yawning hugely and rubbing his eyes.
He got out of his bed and stumbled across the hall into the bathroom before coming to a clumsy halt in front of the sink. He looked up at his reflection and into his hazel bloodshot eyes. He traced the purple bags beneath them with the tip of his finger and muttered to himself "God, I'm a mess... "
He picked up his toothbrush and squirted on some toothpaste before drowsily scrubbing his teeth and tongue. After brushing his teeth, he leaned down and rinsed his face. Joey stood there for a moment, letting the cool water flow on his face before realizing that this morning, being sidetracked would not be a good thing. For him or his mom.
Joey hustled back into his room, afraid of what his mother would do if she found out he still wasn't dressed. He opened his drawers and pulled out a black Led Zeppelin shirt and a pair of jeans. He threw on his clothes and hopped out of his room on one foot, tying the laces of his battered, black converse.
He ran down the stairs, ruffling his dark hair so that it lessened the impression of him just rolling out of bed. He was stopped in the kitchen by his mother who handed him his backpack and lunch as he sprinted out the door.
As he made his way down the street towards his bus stop, he looked down at his watch. 8:15 am.
Not bad he thought. In fact, it wasn't "bad" unless he missed the bus, which shouldn't happen this morning.
"Hey! Joey!" someone yelled behind him.
Joey turned to see his friend, Sam, running to catch up with him.
"Hey Sam," Joey greeted his friend.
"What's new?" Sam panted, trying to catch his breath.
"Not much," Joey replied "Just a lot of shit having to do with school." He was thinking, of course, about the math homework from the night before that he had blown off.
"Yeah, but what else is new?" Sam said nonchalantly, putting his hands behind his head as he and Joey strolled towards the end of the block.
"Heh. I guess" he said. "Oh, and by the way, I didn't do that math last night. You wouldn't happen to have it, would you?"
Sam looked over at him. "You're referring to me, as in, Sam: The lazy-ass punk who couldn't care less about school?" he said skeptically.
Joey laughed. "I should have known," he said "Surprisingly enough, I haven't committed the fact that you only do homework once in a blue moon to memory yet."
"Oh well," Sam said looking back up at the sky. "I'm copying from James... as always."
"That's not surprising," Joey said as they reached the stop and sat down on the curb. "I think he'll do anything for us, eh?"
Of course he would, Joey thought. James was petrified of him and Sam. Joey could never figure out exactly why, but then again, Joey and Sam left that impression on all the nerds for some reason.
He shrugged it off as he glanced down at his converse, fiddling with the badly tied bow on one of them. He looked up at the feeling of Sam's hand on his shoulder and stood up as the bus slowed down and came to a stop in front of them.
