Can I Be Your Anything?, chapter 11

Adrienne was horrified. She looked Dillon in his crystal blue eyes, straight through his longish blonde hair... she had no idea what to do. All she saw in his eyes was pure amusement by her anger. Billie looked confused. Dillon leaned to whisper something in Billie's ear. Adrienne watched in horror as Billie's beautiful green eyes widened and his jaw dropped. Almost in tears, she opened her mouth to say something... but couldn't. She stopped thinking, and just ran out the front door. Mike was pulling out of the driveway right as she ran out of the door. Even though it was illegal for him to be driving, him being only 15, he was a careful driver (very unlike Billie, who was easily distracted), especially for someone diagnosed with hyperactivity. Adrienne burst into tears as he pulled out into the street, not noticing her. She collapsed, mascara running. She didn't notice the stationwagon pulling back into the driveway. Mike opened the door and ran, his long brown hair flopping behind him. He kneeled at her side.
"What's wrong?" he asked, genuine concern in his voice.
"I.. Dillon... Billie..." she hiccuped and burst into fresh tears. Confused, Mike helped her to her feet.
"Is something wrong?" Adrienne nodded. "Do you want to go inside?" Mike asked, confused. Adrienne shook her head violently. "Here, I have to go, so I'm gonna take you to work with me. Linda's already there, so I'll have her call Brad and tell her yer with me," Mike explained calmly.
"Okay," Adrienne said, grateful. She let him open her door for her, and she climbed inside the rusty old car. Making a point to buckle up, she sat completely still for about three minutes, and then Mike broke the uncomfortably awkward silence.
"So... um, do you wanna tell me what happened?" he asked curiously.
"Not really... but I guess I should," Adrienne said. "Well, it started back in Pilem, where I lived. I was going into my freshman year at high school, and I met this guy at school, who transferred from Sacramento. His name was Dillon... he was gorgeous. And I fell for him... which later I learned so did many other girls. And he broke their hearts as painfully as he broke mine. And the worst part is... he didn't even give a fuck!" she choked out. "He took my innocence, my honesty, my purity. My virginity, the one thing that's most sacred to a girl. Because, like the complete dunce I am, I loved him. And I honestly, truly, and with all my heart believed that he loved me. Two days after that night he broke up with me, and then a week later he got word he was being expelled from John Rouger High." Mike sighed, and looked at Adrienne, her tears streaming down her face, making black drops splatter on her jeans.
"Damn," Mike whispered, half in pity, half sheerly just to acknowledge that he was listening.
"And don't think it wasn't before he told everyone what we did. My reputation was ruined, even though I far from cared about that," Adrienne said, stifling her tears as the stationwagon stopped in front of Millie's Cafe.
