Can I Be Your Anything?, chapter 5

Adrienne sat at the booth, fumbling with her bracelet. Billie looked down at his calloused fingers. It was one of the most awkward moments of either of their lives. John had already left and gone home. Mike and Linda had gone back to work.
A few customers stumbled in from the street randomly, but there weren't many of them. At six, after Adrienne had been asleep for an hour, and Billie had been out for thirty minutes, another waitress and chef came in, and Mike and Linda respectively woke the two up.
"Wake up, sleepyhead. We have to head home now," Linda said sensitively towards Adrienne.
"Get up stupid. Hurry up, come on. I've seen slugs faster than you," Mike kicked Billie's leg. Billie muttered and woke up slowly. Adrienne smoothed her hair and stood up on weak legs. Billie hurried to get the door for her. Linda smiled as her son watched Adrienne walk out the door, and then slammed the door in Mike's face.
"Not cool, man. You're such a dick," Mike said as he walked down the steps and pulled himself into the passenger's side of Linda's five-seat '87 Camaro. Billie opened the door for Adrienne once again, shut her door, and then walked around the back of the car to get in beside her. Linda started the car and drove off, turning the radio on. Adrienne recognized the song on the radio immeadiatly.
"Isn't this that last song you played?" she asked Billie, turning to face him.
"Yeah. Mom... please turn it off..." Billie pleaded.
"Oh come on son, are you embarrassed?"
"Yeah!" Mike and Billie said in unison.
"Well it's almost over, and I want to hear if they have anything about the gig on," Linda said. And sure enough, the announcer had been at the gig.
"That was At The Library by Green Day, a local band from Rodeo," the Berkely-based radio station DJ said. "They played a gig today in Rodeo, and lemme tell ya something, these teenage boys are NOT a one-hit-wonder. They're here to stay. They let the crowd feel their music, not just hear it. The lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter, Billie Joe Armstrong fell on the stage twice, but continued to play. If you haven't heard them live, their next gig is Monday, 10 pm at the Berkely Community Center. It's a free, all ages show, so come and see it. Or pick up their sampler at Lookout Records. This next song is by-" Linda flicked the radio off.
"Well, well boys. Good job. Did you hurt yourself, Billie?" Linda asked.
"Nah, I'm good."
"I didn't see you fall," Adrienne said. Billie turned to look at her. Her long black hair had completely fallen from her ponytail. Her dark eyes looked intently out the windshield at the road, taking in the details of this suburban town. She felt his gaze and turned to face him. Her pale cheeks blossomed with colour when she saw him looking at her. Both teens then turned to their respective windows.
"We're heeeere," Linda announced.
