Can I Be Your Anything?, chapter 8

"Can I help you?" Billie asked in an almost sarcastic manner. Adrienne brought herself to her feet.
"Umm, erm, uh, well I, I uh... I was," Adrienne stuttered. She searched desparatly for a response that wouldn't give her away. Thankfully Mike helped her out.
"She was just, uh, straightening up my apartment, and I guess she fell on her way to the kitchen," Mike cut in, giving Adrienne a wink. She smiled and nodded, relieved.
"Oh, well okay. For a second I thought you were eavesdropping or something like that," Billie said. Adrienne laughed.
"That's low, I don't do shit like that," she said.
"Okay then," Billie said.
"Let's go, people!" Linda yelled from the kitchen. It was then that Adrienne noticed Billie and Mike had backpacks on.
"School," Adrienne thought, disappointed. She was looking forward to spending the day with Billie. "Well, duh. He's 15, he can't even legally drop out." Then it hit her.
"Shit," Adrienne muttered under her breath.
"What?" Billie said. He turned, the expression on his face concerned.
"I forgot about school. I didn't drop out," Adrienne said.
"Oooh," Billie said. He thought for a moment. "Hey Mom!"
"What Bill?"
"Adrienne needs to get registered for school," Billie said. Adrienne's heart skipped a beat.
"If he's wanting me to register... that means he wants me to stay," she thought happily. A smile creased her face.
"Oh, that's right," Linda said. "I don't have time to do it today, I have to get to work. But tomorrow I'll stop by and register you."
"Okay," Adrienne said. Her thoughts relaxed. She still didn't know how they were going to get her birth certificate, immunization records, and school records without notifying her mother, but she was sure that it'd be okay in the end. But something was tugging at her memory... something she couldn't put her finger on... but it was there, nonetheless.
