"Billie get up time to get ready for school." Anna said shaking her resting sibling.
"No i'm sleepy I don't wanna go."
"Get up lazy aa... Butt" She said pulling the covers he shot straight up.
"MOOOOOOOMM!" Instantly his mother was at the door in her waitress uniform brushing her hair.
"What is it?!" She said holding the brush in front of her like a weapon thinking it was a home invader or some thing like that.
"She took my blanket away." Ollie relaxed but was angry at Billie for screaming bloody murder over this.
"Billie get up it's Monday you have school today now your clothes are on the dresser, get up and your daddy is gonna take you to school." She said walking out. Anna stuck her tongue out laughing walking out to get ready for her first day. Billie was starting to think school was a big hassle and he hadn't even started yet this was gonna suck. He walked out of his room lazily pouting going down to the dining room to eat a bowl of cereal. His mom and half of his siblings were gone already and all the people there were his father him, and Anna who left a bit later.
"Bye daddy later shortie." She said running out the door her father shook his head and finished his cofee.
"Ready son?"
"I guess, why does school have to be so early daddy?"
"I don't know son I don't know let's go." He handed his son his backpack walking out to the truck.
"Hmmphh I better get a nap time." he complained.
Andrew laughed.
"We all need a good nap time don't we son."
"Uhuh."
The drive to Hillcrest Elementary was short and silent Billie resting his head. Andy trying to not get lost even though this place was small and it seemed unlikely for him to get lost. He pulled up to the school and stopped the truck.
"Now I want you to stay right here until either me or Anna come pick you up or if Mrs. Santos comes she'll take you home and make sure you don't lose Angel because one of us will pick both of you up is that understood?"
"Yes sir."
He rustled Billie's hair getting out of the car to walk his son to his classroom. Holding his son's hand they walked through the somewhat crowded halls until they ended at the back of the school in front of a lone bungalow. Billie's father still kept his grip while he talked to one of the neighbors who had also brought her son. Billie tugged at his father's arm to grab his attention.
"What is it?" He said looking down, Billie pointed to Sinteria who was sitting on a bench looking down at her shoes before his father could say anything Billie let go and ran off.
"Kids."
He smiled at the woman who agreed and they agreed their conversation while Billie ran over to surprise Sin. She hadn't noticed him because she was so intent on her shoes he walked behind putting his little hands over her distant looking eyes.
"Guess who." He whispered into her ears her hair smelled like lavender and apples and her skin was ever so soft and smooth.
"Hmmmm uhm Chris?" She said smiling.
"Noo."
"Uhm Josh."
"Nooo." he was getting impatient and she knew it so she decided to keep going.
"Uhhh Annie!"
"Sin!"
"Oh Billie?!" He removed his hands and sat next to her.
"Yeah! Where's your mommy and daddy?"
"Mommy had to go to work and my dad said he was tired." She said looking back at her shoes.
"So who brung you?"
"I walked."
Billie took a double take his mouth open they told him he had to wait until 4th grade to start walking to school alone and his best friend was barely in kindergarten and she had to walk alone already.
"When did you get here?"
"I dunno but no one was here yet a lady gave me a cookie and said that we would all go inside in a little bit." She said shrugging off holding back tears she felt swelling up inside of her.
"My daddy can bring you to school you know he's bringing me if not you can walk with me and Annie and not have to walk alone." She smiled at him and said.
"I don't want to bug."
"You won't bug they like you more then me." He said hurtfully but smiling she looked up laughing nudging him.
"Nu uh."
"Yes huh! Look let's go ask my dad." He grabbed her hand pulling her to his father to get a fair answer.
"Dad I want a honest answer who do you like better?" Billie said looking up at his father trying do his best to wink and let him get the clue to pick Sinteria without her noticing. He looked smiled and said.
"Why Sinteria of course son." Sinteria who wasn't even paying attention just looking around turned around confused.
"What?"
"Everyone likes her better."
"See."
"Uhm sorry?" She said not sure if she should be apologizing to Billie.
"So tomorow I'll go knock on your door and you can come to school wiht us right dad?"
"Well that's only if her mother will let her." Sinteria didn't get a chance to say anything before Billie's big mouth gave it all away.
"Her mommy and daddy can't do it." Andrew looked at the little girl and asked her how she got here today and once again Billie answered for her.
"She had to walk." Sinteria shook her head Andrew looked at the little girl amazed that she didn't even bother to check if they could give her a ride which they would have no problem whatsoever at all doing.
"Of course she can get a ride to school and when we can't give her a ride she can walk with you and Annie." Sinteria was embarrassed and thank god the bell rang becasue she couldn't handle being outside with Mr. Armstrong much longer and almost ran in the class while Billie was hugging his dad good bye. He saw Sinteria had left and was confused walking into the classroom alone. He spotted her sitting on the rug by herself he went to go sit next to her but she walked away and told him to go away.
"Why?"
"Because you told your daddy."
"You never told me I couldn't tell."
"Well you shoulda known I don't want you telling."
"Sin does your mommy hit you?" Billie said scooting closer as she scooted away some kids thought it was a game and started sitting down folowing them.
"I said no go away!" She got up on the verge of tears runnning to a corner in the classroom. The kids didn't know what happened but didn't really care they just pushed Billie top keep scooting their way around the circle shaped rug with numbers shapes and the alphabet, Billie wade his way out of the so called game and went to Sinteria who was doing her best to fight off the tears.
"Don't cry Sin it's gonna be OK." Billie hugged her her struggle against the tears was worsened and she looked at him.
"She never does it more then once."
"Does what?"
"She's always really sorry when she's done she tells me so."
"She hits you?"
"Only because I'm bad and I love her my mommy doesn't mean it but you can't tell anyone and you shouldn't a told your daddy cuz now my mommy's gonna get mad at me."
"But something can happen to you if you walk alone."
"But my mommy is gonna think that I don't love her and thats why I told but I do lover her I do."
"Sin dad won't tell your mom I promise." Even though he knew it wasn't true he wasn't about to lose his best friend over this.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
"Hello class I'm Mrs. Anderson now lets all get in a circle and we'll all introduce ourselves."
"Come on Sin let's go!" Billie pulled her up to her feet as they ran to the carpet to sit down and get acquainted with their new class. The class went around and they knew about half of the kids and the others they had seen around. When it came time to them Sinteria was finally happy again and was instantly liked by everyone in the class. Billie wasn't as lucky but Sinteria didn't leave him behind she grabbed his hand and took him to go play on the teeter totter during recess. Even though all the kids wanted to play with her the only friend she really needed or wanted was Billie Joe and he felt the same for her and the friendship they had couldn't be broken not by anyone and that was obvious as of their first big day of school. When they got home Annie had picked them up and took them home making them a snack so that after they could do their homework whch was a worksheet of handwriting of the letter A, a and the number 1 it didn't take them long and soon after they were outside playing. By the time Sinteria's mom had gotten home she had eaten with the Armstrongs and was dozing off on the couch.
"I'm sorry I'm late I had to stay late at the church please forgive me."
"It's fine Angel has been well an angel." Billie's father said he was growing aware of Sinteria's home life seeing that it wasn't all that great and instead of confronting her he just snuck around it because f he got her mother mad he wouldn't want tothink how Angel would have to suffer for it.
"You know if you want we can take her to school in the mornings its really no trouble no need to waste all of our gas."
"It's fine."
"No I insist." He kept going Mrs. Santos finaly gave in and said that it would be fine she woke up Sinteria grabbing her back pack and jacket nearly pulling her arm out of it's socket quietly hissing at her to walk right and walk faster. Andrew shook his head he hated that he lived right across from a child abuser he knew he had to do something but he wasn't even sure himself he had only suspected tht she was getting hit. He turned off the lights everyone had gone to bed except for Billie who fell asleep with Sin on the couch his father walked into the living room turning off the T. V picking up hs sleeping son who didn't even notice and took him up the stairs to bed.
"I love you son don't ever think that any of us would hurt you. I'll find a way for Sinteria to be happy like she is with us I promise." He whispered into his sleeping sons ear and turned to walk out the door.
"I promise."
