The School On The Hill, chapter 5
"You know where Jakob is?" Adrienne asked in disbelief, "How can you, the files were lost when I was in prison" She clapped her hand over her mouth, realising what she had just said.Sabriel simply blinked.She had a habit of doing that, like a curtin coming down over the shining, eerie objects forced on her pale face.
"I can't believe I'm even discusing this with an eight year old" Adrienne thought.On the verge of asking Sabriel to go home, Adrienne took several deep breathes to calm herself down.Then something, perhaps Billie Joe's spirit, perhaps pure instinct, seemed to whisper from deep inside her.
"Just give her a chance" it hissed "You haven't got anything to lose.
Adrienne inhaled and exhaled again slowly, before fixing her eyes on Sabriel.
"I can't take you away from the village" she said carefully "But can you tell me where he is?"
Sabriel looked into the sky, her skinny body shaking uncontrollibly.Her eyes rolled backwards, leaving just the white, creepy part in view.
"Sabriel" Adrienne said fearfully "It's okay, shhh"
She could hear the other children screaming in terror at the sight of thier classmate.Adrienne knew she had todo something, anything, to calm them down.She knew she should send someone for the doctor, try to get the rest of the children inside.Nothing happened, she stood, frozen to the spot.It was like watching a horror film, whn you don't want to watch, yet you cannot tear you eyes from the screen.Then suddenly, at the presice moment Sabriel stopped shaking, Adrienne fell to the ground.

"Adie" came the voice "Adie, wake up". Somehow, she found the strenghth to open her eyes.A familier face swam into view.
"Billie Joe" she croaked "How can you-"
He took her hand and looked at her, his face screwed up in worry.
"It's okay Adie" he said "I just wanted to see you"
Adrienne felt tears welling up in her eyes.It couldn't be real, any moment now she would wake up, alone.Suddenly she became aware of her surroundings, white walls, white machines and someone had dressed her in an uncomfortable white gown.
"You collapsed in the playground" Billie Joe reminded her, "BUt you're going to be fine"
If he thought his words were comforting, he was mistaken.Adrienne felt her chest tighten.How could her dead husband be here, holding her hand, telling her everything would be allright.And then she remembered.
"What happened to Sabriel?" she asked "Please tell me she's okay"
He smiled, handing her a piece of paper.
"I've to give you this" Billie Joe said
Bewildered, Adrienne unfolded the note to reveal Sabriel's neat printing
'He Is With Edna' it read
"Billie" she gasped "She knows where Jakob is"
A deathly silence followed.And Adrienne didn't need to glance up from the piece of paper, to know that her husband had gone...
