The School On The Hill, chapter 6
"Miss Nesser, please calm down" the nurse said "Or I shall be forced to sedate you"
Adrienne did not calm down. Her blood raced around her body like an angry dragon.
"No I won't calm down" she shouted "My step sister's got my little boy and I want him back"
"We can discuss this later" the nurse said, clearly thinking Adrienne was going mad, "Now let's get you back to be.You've had a shock"
"Please" Adrienne begged, "Billie Joe came to see me, he told me to go and get Jakob"
The nurse gave her a startled glance.
"Your husband died in an arson attack allmost a year ago Miss Nesser" she said slowly, pronouncing each sylobel asthough Adrienne was heard of hearing "Now let's get you back to bed"
It was only when she had been heavily drugged and left alone with her thoughts, could Adrienne think properly about the days events. Much as she wanted to think about rescuing Jakob, her mind repeatedly slipped back to Billie Joe. Was he really in the room with her?
It felt real enough, but her mind was so cloudy from the sedation, she found it hard to concentrate. She felt do light headed, it was as if she had been stuffed with cotton wool. Her arm was throbbing, where they had forced the needle under her skin.
"What am I supposed to do now?" she mumbled, her words tripping over each other.
"What the hell do you want me to do Billie?" And with that, she slipped into a restless sleep.
---------------------------------------------------
"It seemms my visitor will not be joining us" snarled Aunt Edna "So it's just you and me Jakob"
Jakob began to shake in terror. Her voice was quiet, unnaturally quiet, like a cat waiting to pounce.
"Should I start tidying the garden Aunt Edna" he asked timidly, keen to avoid her.
"What an excellent idea" she said, her voice growing more dangerous, "You can go outside and get started, I might join you later"
It was the word 'join' that mad Jakob nervous, for he knew that what she really meant was, 'beat'.
Still, the first three or four hours of the day were uneventful, with Edna indoors reading a book.
"It's about a little boy who's mother torchers him" she had told Jakob, "I'm reading it for insperation.
It sounded so ridiculous, yet Jakob didn't put anything past her.He was sure, had he found a guilotine in the shed, he would not have been at all surprized.
It was around one o clock that thing started to go very wrong. That was when Aunt Edna decided to join Jakob in the garden.
"I need a chair" she barked the moment she opened the gate, "Run and fetch me one"
Jakob dropped the spade, massaging his back. The spade was heavy, probably heavier than him , and he was already stiff from lifting furniture the previous night.
"Yes Aunt Edna" he said quickly, darting towards the house. An evil smile danced on her lips.
"Don't stop digging" she ordered
This was a tricky situation, Jakob realized, and one which had to be handled with exreame care.
"Which should I do first Aunt Edna" he asked politly
"Both" she snapped "And hurry up about it"
Jakob stood, in the middle of the garden, frozen. He had no idea what to do next.NEver before had that little spark of insanity danced so wildly in the centre of her eyes.
""Are you refusing to obey me Jakob?" she asked threateningly.Something inside him snapped. The rage which had been bubbling inside him for so long, suddenly spilled out of his mouth like a volcano errupting.
"YES" he screamed "I AM REFUSING TO OBEY YOU. WHY SHOULDN'T I? YOU'RE EVIL. I BET IT WAS YOU WHO KILLED MY DAD TOO"
A sickening smile streched across her ugly face as she grabbed Jakob, whipping a knife from her pocket. He could see the metal flickering in the afternoon sun.
"You're a clever boy Jakob" she said "Very clever. Let me tell you a little secret"
Jakob wriggled furiously, trying to escape her stong grip.
"Do you know who else died that night Jakob?" she continued "Your big brother"
Something hot caught in his troat.
"That's right, Joey's dead. He died pulling you out of the house. Blind with anger, Jakob twisted himself around to punch her.But he saw a flash of silver, as Aunt Edna plunged the knife into his side...
