She Always Was His Girl, chapter 40

Katie had been to almost every bar in New York City looking for Billie Joe. He had told her he was leaving for New York to get away from everything and try to relax. Katie knew Billie Joe way too well to know that "relaxing" was getting wasted. She needed to find him and make sure he was okay.

Katie finally stumbled across a pub that was open twenty-four hours a day. She had been looking for him all evening, and it was nearing 2:00 AM. Katie opened the door and entered the pub. There at the counter, she saw a drunken Billie Joe with several beer bottles scattered in front of him, and he was downing a shot of vodka.

It pained her to see him in that way. She loved him, and when he hurt, she hurt twice as much. Katie ran up to the counter where Billie Joe was sitting and sat beside of him. By then he was downing another shot. He sat down the shot glass down on the counter and drunkenly sighed.

Billie Joe hadn't noticed Katie sit down beside him, so she made her presence known by gently tapping him on the shoulder. He spun around and looked at her. His eyes were even more bloodshot than when he had come to her two weeks prior when it was discovered that Cigarettes and Valentines was missing.

"What are you doinghere?" Billie Joe asked, slurring the words doing and here together.

"I'm here to save you from killing yourself." she responded. "Now get up, we're leaving right now." Katie continued

"No, we're not. You might be leaving, but I'm not." he replied while swirling the non-existant vodka around in his shot glass.

"Yes, we are. So get your stubborn ass up right now." she commnded, getiing tired of his hard-head attitude.

Billie Joe ignored her and requested another shot from the bartender. The bartender, not really wanting to get in to their business, finally decided on saying, "Mr. Armstrong, I believe the lady is right. You've had enough."

"Hey! I'm paying for all this shit, so you can't tell me when I've had enough." Billie Joe said, his temper flaring.

"Yes I can, sir. I own this joint, and I make the calls." the bartender replied.

Billie Joe layed his head down on the marble counter. The coldness of the marble offered a small amount of comfort to his throbbing headache. After a few minutes of just sitting there in silence, Billie Joe finally raised up and said, "Fine, I'll just find another bar."

Katie had had enough of this shit. She was mad at him for the first time in about thirteen years when she found him making out with another girl at Gilman Street. Even though she knew it wasn't his fault that the master tapes disappeared, she knew he had brought all of this upon himself. He knew there were other ways to handle problems then drowning them with alcohol.

Katie slapped him with all the force and anger she had in her. Billie Joe touched his hand to the side of his face, speechless she had just done that.

"What the fuck was that for?" he questioned, rubbing his cheek, trying to get rid of the stinging.

"You know exactly what that was for. I'm sick of all this shit. Now get the fuck up right now!" she screamed.

Fortunately there was only two other customers in the pub, so they didn't have a big audience for the whole scene. Billie Joe obeyed Katie, and got up off of the stool on which he had been sitting on. Katie grabbed his shirt collar and led him out of the pub, where she held him up against the side of the building and dug through his pockets trying to find his key card to his hotel room. She then flagged down a taxi, and requested for the driver to take them to the Marriott, the hotel he was staying in.

The ride to the hotel was completely silent except when Billie Joe looked over at Katie and saw a tear fall from her eye. He reached over and tried to wipe her tear away, but she pushed his hand away and sulkily said, "Don't touch me."

When they arrived at the Marriot, Katie helped Billie Joe out of the taxi and led him inside the plush hotel. She took him to the elevator and pushed the button that read "15", the top floor, where he was staying.

After they got to the top floor, Katie led him to his room, unlocked the door, and found the bedroom where she told him to lay down and get some rest. He did as he was told, and she waited for him to fall asleep before leaving and going back to her hotel.

The next morning, Katie got up early and headed over to the Marriott. She had kept his key card so she would be able to get into his room. She finally got to his room to find he hadn't awoke yet. She looked at him as he lay in bed, asleep.

How can he be such an asshole one minute, and then look so sweet the next? she thought to herself.

Despite getting so mad at him the night before, she still loved him with all of her heart and soul. She didn't want to get so mad at him, but she did. Though this sounds strange, she slapped him because she loved him.

Katie called for room service, and ordered coffee for Billie Joe's hangover. When she received the pot of coffee, she woke Billie Joe who stirred slightly, and then moaned from the tremendous headache he still had.

"Sweetie, I have some coffee for you." she whispered to him as she sat beside him on the edge of the bed.

"Where the hell am I?" he inquired, sleepily.

"Well, I found you at a bar last night, slapped you, and then I brought you back to your hotel room." she responded.

"Oh, I remember you slapping me. That hurt really fucking bad." he said, taking the mug of coffee from her.

"Sorry. I just was...overwhelmed with anger, I guess."

"It's okay" he started, "God dammit, I feel like shit." he moaned.

"Drink the coffee. You'll feel better." she replied.

Billie Joe took a few sips of coffee, and then looked at Katie who was laying down, sideways across the bed. He knew why she had gotten mad at him, and couldn't really say he could blame her. He had been a complete asshole, and he knew it.

"Uhh, Katie." he said, catching her attention.

"What?" she asked.

"I'm really sorry about everything. I know I hurt you, and I shouldn't have. I love you."

Katie simply replied, "Oh."

"Do you still love me?" he asked.

"Of course I still love you, Billie Joe. I never stopped loving you, and I never will. We belong together, and nothing you or I do will destroy our relationship."

"Are you still mad at me?" he questioned.

"No, not really. I just think you know how to handle your problems the right way, but for some unknown reason, you choose to handle them the wrong way. I get sick of it. Not only does it hurt me, it hurts your whole family. Billie Joe, you have two children. Two precious little boys that you might as well abandon when you pull shit like this. You promised me you wouldn't do this anymore, but you broke your promise. I don't want to trust you anymore, but yet, something tells me to still trust you. I'm going to give you one more chance, and I swear to God, if you mess this up, I don't ever want to see you again." Katie responded.

"I won't mess it up Katie. I love you too much."
