She Always Was His Girl, chapter 42
It had been a year since American Idiot was first released, and it continued to be on the list of top albums. Green Day had been nominated for a number of Grammys, but they only one. However, at the VMAs they won seven out of eight awards.
Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre were pretty much still amazed at the album's success. They had been on tour pretty much the entire year. Billie Joe really wanted to just get back home and see Adrienne, his children, and Katie.
Especially Katie.
He had to have her. He knew what he wanted in life, and that was Katie.
One evening, Billie Joe got a moment to give Katie a call. Mike and Tre went out for a few moments, so he thought it would be the perfect oppurtunity to call her. Billie Joe dialled her number and waited for her to pick up.
"Hello?" she answered
"Hey Baby." he replied.
"Oh hi Honey. What's up?" she asked.
"Nothing really. I can't wiat to get this damn tour over so I can get back to you."
"I know. I really miss you." she said.
"I miss you too. So, how are you and your boys?"
"Oh we're doing fine. They're at school right now. Third grade; can you believe that? It seems like yesterday when they were born." she responded.
"Yea, they grow up too fast." he laughed.
Katie sighed, and there was a brief pause between the two for a moment.
"You know, I love you." he said breaking the silence.
"I love you too. I can't wait until I see you again."
"Yea, I know Baby. Well, I need to go. I'll talk to you later, okay?"
"Okay, I love you too." she replied not wanting their conversation to end.
"Love you too. Bye Baby."
Billie Joe flipped his cell phone closed and looked up to see Tre and Mike.
"Oh you're back." Billie stated the obvious.
"Yep." Tre responded in his normally chipper voice.
"I was just calling Adie to check up on her and the boys." he lied.
By that time, Tre, having the attention span of a gnat on a hot plate, had already moved on to occupying his time somewhere else.
"Umm... Dude, you had just gotten off the phone with her when we left." Mike said.
Oh shit. He was caught. Oh fuck, he thought. Billie Joe didn't have an alibi prepared this time. He could feel his face burning. Now he had nowhere to hide. Mike was catching on.
"Come on, Bill. You don't have to lie to me. We've been best friends for lmost twenty-five years. What's going on?" Mike inquired.
Billie Joe didn't say anything. Goddammit, you dumbfuck. Think of something, he silently scolded himself. Lying to Mike made him feel like such a prick. They had always shared everything with each other, but there was no way in hell he could tell him about Katie.
No way.
"I'm telling you, it was Adie. I umm... Forgot to ask her something."
Billie Joe was a horrible liar. You could see right through him even if you didn't know him. Mike, however, knew him way too well.
"Billie, come on man. I can tell when you're lying. Now tell me who you were talking to."
Billie Joe looked into Mike's piercing blue eyes. He could tell by his expression that he wasn't mad, just concerned.
He couldn't lie to him anymore. He had to tell at least his best friend. Billie Joe took in a deep breath.
"I was... I was talking to Katie Warner, my old girlfriend form high school. Do you remember her?"
"Of course I remember her, but you said you lov--"
Mike was cut off by Billie Joe who said, "Yea, I know what I said."
Mike just stared at Billie Joe in disbelief. He was having an affair. He was betraying his wife, his children, and his best friends. He was a liar.
"I love her. I always have, and I always will." he admitted.
In some ways it felt like he had just had a heavy burden lifted from his shoulders, but in other ways it just felt like more pressure. Why did he have to tell Mike? Why did he fuck up again?
"But I don't understand. I mean Adie... Does she know about you and Katie?" Mike questioned.
"Fuck no. Are you that stupid?" Of course she doesn't now. You have to swear to me that you won't tell a single soul about her."
"Billie I don't know. You shouldn't be doing this. Katie was in the past."
"In the past?! How is she in the past? When she moved away, I felt like my whole world has collapsed. I have thought about her every day for the past fifteen years. We loved each other, and we still do." Billie Joe replied.
"Well, when did you get back together?"
Damn, why did Mike have to have so many fucking questions?
"Well, a few years ago, when I was in New York, I ran into her brother Corey. We got to talking, and I ended up with her address and phone number. She had actually moved back to Berkeley to got to college, and she missed me. She didn't ever try to find me because she was scared I had moved on. It took me about a year, but I finally went to see her. She still took my breath away." Billie Joe explained.
"So this has been going on for a few years now?"
Billie Joe nodded and added, "I found out that I had never fallen out of love with her. She still had a hold of my heart."
"Shit. It sounds just like the Whatsername character."
"Exatly." Billie Joe responded.
It was enough to make Mike sick. He had been having an affair for several years now and had neglected to tell anyone, and he had based one of the characters from their award winning punk rock opera on her.
"Look, you can't tell anyone. Not Tre, not Jason, not Rob. Not a single soul. I'm trusting you." Billie laid a hand on Mike's shoulder.
Mike nodded. He was good at keeping dirty little secrets, but could he keep on this dirty?
