She Always Was His Girl, chapter 43

It was mid December of 2005. "Bullet In A Bible" had been released back in November, and Green Day had finished up their American Idiot tour. They were now putting the finishing touches on their new album, which they only hoped would be as much of a success as American Idiot was.

Billie Joe sat in the living room of his Californian home. Adrienne had already decorated the house with Christmas decorations and it looked rather cheery, just as it did always that time of year. He had spent all afternoon wrapping gifts. Joey and Jakob had went to their "Uncle" Mike's house, so he and Adrienne would be able to wrap gifts without the children sneaking peeks at their presents.

He looked out the window. It was a dull, dreary, rainy day. The kinds of days Billie Joe disliked the most. Billie Joe hadn't been able to see Katie very much since the end of the tour. He had run over to her house on several occasions, but he hadn't been able to spend a lot of time with her.

Katie stood in her kitchen preparing sugar cookies. Carey and Cameron were in their room playing their XBox. She began spooning the dough onto a cookie sheet when the doorbell rang.

"Can one of you guys get that? I'm kinda busy right now." she called to her children.

Carey paused the game and ran downstairs to the front door to answer it. When he opened the door, he saw someone who looked oddly familiar.

"Hey! I've seen you before. You're that dude from the band that says bad words all the time and they have to bleep it out on TV." Carey said.

"Yep, that's me," Billie laughed, "Is your mother home?"

"Yea, I'll go get her."

Carey slammed the door keeping Billie Joe waiting outside while he ran into the kitchen.

"Mom! There's some famous dude outside."

Katie immediately knew whom her son was talking about. She quickly washed her hands and made her way to the door. She hugged Billie Joe as soon as he got inside.

She turned to her son and said, "This is my good friend, Billie Joe."

"Hi." Carey said shyly.

"Hey buddy." Billie Joe replied a little uncertain about what to say.

"You're famous, right," Carey asked, "I saw you on TRL one day."

"Yea, I kind of am." he smirked.

"How do you know my mom?"

"Well, we were really good friends a long time ago, and then we met each other again a few years ago." Billie Joe explained.

"Honey, why don't you go upstairs and play with Cam for a little while, okay?" Katie suggested.

"Okay, I know when I'm not wanted." Carey joked heading back upstairs.

The two adults smiled as the youngster walked up the stairs, and then Billie Joe slipped his arm around Katie, bringing her body close to his.

"Did I come at a bad time?" he asked pressing his forehead to hers.

"Well, we can't really do anything with each other." Katie replied referring to her two sons who were upstairs.

"Yea, I know." Billie Joe said gently kissing her lips.

"I've missed you a lot." Katie whispered bringing him into another lip lock.

God, it felt so good when she kissed him. It made him feel as if he had never been kissed before.

"I've missed you, too." he responded cupping her face so he could kiss her once again.

"Have I told you how much I love you?" he questioned.

"Yea, but I wouldn't mind hearing it again."

While Billie Joe and Katie stayed downstairs sharing signs of affection with each other, Carey was upstairs telling Cameron about their mother's visitor.

"I'm telling you, Cam. It was that weird dude who wears make-up. You know from the band that played on TRL last month."

"Sure, Carey. Whatever." Cameron responded completely absorbed with his video game.

"God, Cameron! Why don't you just come and see for yourself. He's downstairs talking to Mom."

"I'm going down there right now just so I can tell everyone at school about what a freaking liar you are." said Cameron getting up to go downstairs.

The two boys marched down the stairs and into the living room only to find their Billie Joe lying on top of their mother doing everything but have sex with her. Out of the corner of her eye, Katie saw her children, and attempted to push Billie Joe off of herself.

"What's wrong Babe?" he asked.

Katie gestured to the two little boys who had just recently entered the room. Billie Joe quickly removed himself off of Katie.

Awkward moment at its best.

"Mom, are you dating that guy?" Cameron asked.

Katie looked at Billie Joe searching for what to say, but he was just as unsure as she was.

"Umm...Yea, we kind of are." she answered.

"Cool!" the boys exclaimed in unison.

"Mom's dating a rich and famous guy! Mom's dating a rich and famous guy!" Cameron chanted.

Great. Two more people know about Katie and me, Billie thought, Well, at least their just kids.

Just kids. That's what he though. If only adults knew the capabilities of children's minds.

Over the course of the rest of December and into the beginning of January, when Billie Joe was over, Carey, the mastermind, would sneak into wherever Billie Joe and Katie were and take pictures.

Carey, despite being only eight years old, was one smart little boy. He knew exactly how to take and print off digital photos. The kids at school refused to believe Carey and Cameron about their mother and Billie Joe, so pictures were the best way of proving it.

One evening after Billie Joe had left, and Cameron and Katie had went to bed, Carey snuck downstairs and logged onto the computer. He hooked up the digital camera to its cradle connected to the computer, brought up the program, which allowed him to print the pictures, and printed them off. When he was finished, he folded the pictures neatly and put them into his book bag so he could show everyone at school.

If only he knew how much trouble that would cause...

The next day after a show-and-tell at school with the pictures, Carey got a surprising response from another child in his class named Robbie.

"Hey, I saw that guy on the VMAs. My older sister likes that band, and she said that dude was married." Robbie informed.

"No, he's not. He's dating my mom.";

"Bull crap, Carey! You probably just had someone edit those pictures to make it look like she is. You're such a flippin' liar." said Robbie.

"I am not! She is, and you're just jealous 'cause your dad's a banker."

"Shut up!" Robbie yelled.

"Good comeback." Carey replied in a smart-aleck tone.

After getting home from school, Carey pulled up a Green Day fan website, and went to the pictures section. He pulled up a picture of Billie Joe and Adrienne and printed it off. He was a bit shocked to see the man that was supposedly dating his mother was in pictures with another woman.

What would his mother say about it?

"Mom!" Carey called.

"What honey?" she asked coming into the room where he was.

Carey handed Katie the picture and let her study it for a moment. She felt as if her soul had been ripped out. Adrienne and Billie Joe looked so happy and cute together. How could she have been so naive to think that Billie Joe could still love her when he was happily married to another woman? It brought tears to her eyes.

When Billie Joe came over later that night, Katie wasn't as welcoming as usual.

"Billie, I think you ought to leave." she said.

"Why Baby?" he asked.

"I just really think we should stop seeing each other." she responded her tears ready to pour and the depth of her soul burning.

"What do you mean? Why should we stop seeing each other?" Billie Joe questioned.

His heart felt like it had been torn in two. The woman he loved didn't want to see him anymore.

"You're married!" she screamed. By then, her tears had started to flow, drenching her silky cheeks that he loved to touch when he kissed her.

"I love you, but we can't do this anymore." she sobbed.

"Baby, baby, baby," he cooed attempting to wrap his arms around her.

"No," she commanded wiggling out of his grip, "I don't want to do this anymore. Now please go."

She pointed to the door.

Billie Joe was absolutely heartbroken. He hadn't been happier since he had found Katie, and now, she didn't want him. What had he done? What had he said?

There were no answers.

As he walked out the front door, a tear rolled down his cheek.
Why is she doing this to me? I love her.

While droving home, Billie Joe began to cry. He cried until there were no more tears. He didn't even think about the whole real-men-don't-cry factor, he just did. After almost reaching his Oakland home, he made a violent U-turn.

There was no way in hell he was going to let this relationship go down the drain. He and Katie had been through way too much together, and she meant too much to him to just give up.

Billie Joe finally pulled up in her driveway, got out of his car, and ran to her door. He pounded on her door until she finally answered. And when she did, Billie Joe pulled her into the most heartfelt, passionate, loving kiss she had ever received.

"Tell me that meant nothing to you, and I'll leave. Tell me that our entire relationship has been based on a lie, and I'll never bother you again, but I know what we have. I know there's something between us, and there always will be. I know I'm married and that should matter, but when I'm with you, it just doesn't. I fucking love you, Katie, and I'd do anything to be with you for the rest of my life."

Katie stood there speechless for a moment, and then flung herself into his arms.

"It does mean something. I love you so much!" she said burying her face into his neck as they stood in the doorway holding each other.

"I love you..."
