She Always Was His Girl, chapter 52

Billie Joe paced the hallway of the hospital nervously. There was no way he could go see Katie then. He had caused her to go into labor early. Now, he wasn't sure if the baby would even make it.
He sat down on one of the navy blue, cushioned chairs that was displayed next to a plastic plant and small table with magazines scattered all over it. He picked up Rolling Stone and flipped through it until he found a small, one page article on his affair with Katie. Billie Joe let out a sigh and threw the magazine aside. He placed his head in his hands and sat there for what seemed like ages.
"Mr. Armstrong? Mr. Armstrong?";
Billie Joe heard his name being called. He had apparently fallen asleep. He fluttered his eyes open to see a doctor standing before him. He straightened up in his seat and rubbed his eyes.
"How's Katie?"; he asked.
"Well, when you brought her in, as you already know, she had went into premature labor. Her blood pressure had shot up to such a high extent that she almost suffered from a stroke. We have her at a stable condition now, so we think she's doing okay. "
"Oh thank God," he breathed, "but what about the baby?";
"When the baby came out, she wasn't breathing. We did CPR on her and now she's doing fine. Both Katie and Janelle are okay."; the doctor informed.
"Janelle?"; Billie Joe questioned.
"Yes, that's what Katie named her.";
"Oh."; he replied.
His daughter, his own flesh and blood, had just been born, and he had missed it. He felt like shit.
"Doctor, I have a question.";
"What is it, sir?"; the doctor asked, turning back around.
"Janelle...She's okay, right? I mean I know she's healthy or whatever since she's premature and all, but she's not like retarded or anything is she?";
"No, sir. She's totally healthy.";
"Thank you so much."; Billie Joe replied getting up to shake hands with the older man.
"You're quite welcome.";
"Do you think I could go see Janelle?"; Billie Joe questioned.
"Yea, I'm sure that'd be okay. Just go down to the nursery and tell one of the nurses that you're there to see your baby.";

He followed the directions of the signs hanging on the walls of the hospital to find the nursery. He finally found the nursery and looked into the window to see all the babies until he spotted his own.
Janelle Elaine Armstrong.
She was gorgeous, just like her mother. Even at such a young age, she looked exactly like Katie. She had a full head of rich, dark brown hair and these sparkling blue eyes you could drown in. The word beautiful didn't even start to cover it.
As he stood staring into the window, a middle-aged, pretty for her age nurse came out the door.
"Sir, are you here to see your baby?"; she asked.
"Yea, it's the little one over there on the far right.";
"Oh, you mean Janelle Armstrong? Oh my God! You're Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day. My daughter is obsessed with you. I didn't recognize you without your, you know, guyliner or whatever they're calling it these days.";
she laughed.
"Wow, I didn't know it made me look that different,"; he joked.
"Oh, I'll go get Janelle so you can hold her."; she said going back through the door into the nursery. She picked Janelle up out of her crib carefully, and took her outside to her awaiting father. As Billie Joe held the baby, he broke down and cried.
It was both tears of joy and sorrow.
He hadn't felt this way when Carmen was born, or either of the boys. He had been happy, but he was overwhelmed by Janelle's birth. He was ecstatic that she had been brought into the world. She was positively gorgeous and was adorable beyond belief, but something made him feel horrible inside.
He knew he wasn't going to be there for her like he would be for his other children. He would of course be a real father, and not a scumbag like some other jerks in the world. He knew, though, that he wouldn't see her as much as he would like since he wouldn't be living with her and her mother.
He would be with Adrienne, Joey, and Jakob.
"You're happy, huh?"; the nurse smiled.
"Yea, pretty happy...God, she's so tiny."; he replied holding onto her small, insignificant hand.
"Yea, I know. She weighed in at four pounds fifteen ounces, but she's premature so we kind of expected it. She's really healthy to be that small though. There's not one little thing wrong with her, so that's what we like to see.";
"That's what the doctor said, and you have no idea how happy I am to hear it. I was so scared that she'd be, ya know, handicapped of some sort."; Billie Joe responded.
"Oh no, sir. She's quite alright. I hope this isn't a bad time, but do you think I could get your autograph for my daughter and her little friend Carly? They both love you and your band. They could probably tell you more about you all than you could."; she joked.
"Oh yea, of course. I like to hear from fans and stuff. Positive feedback's the key for success for us. It motivates us,"; he started, "Oh crap, I don't have anything to write with.";
"I'll get some. We have a notepad and that sort of stuff in the back. Just hold on a minute."; the nurse said going back, once again, to the nursery.
As soon as the nurse had went into the back, Katie came rolling up beside Billie Joe in a wheelchair.
"What are you doing here,"; she glared at him as he continued to hold their baby, "you obviously don't care about either of us.";
"Katie, you know that's not true. I love you with all my heart. You know that, but you have to understand that me and Adie have been together for twelve years. She's given me two children, and devoted her life to me. I'm bound with her in marriage. You're more than I deserve, Katie. Adie's who I need to be with. My heart is telling me to be with Adrienne, and my mind and what's in my pants is telling me otherwise. I'm trusting my heart this time."; he explained.
Katie looked down at the ground and then into his gorgeous green eyes. She no longer found love with him, and she hadn't found hatred either. It was a feeling that she couldn't describe. She suddenly understood his motives, no matter how hard it was to.
She sniffed.
"Katie, I do love you,"; he began handing her their baby as he got down on his knees in front of her, "I wish I could be with you, but I just can't. Like I said, I belong with Adie. Do you understand what I mean and where I'm coming from?";
She placed her hand on the side of his face and let his unshaven face tickle her hand. She ran her fingers across his lips and he brought his hand up to touch hers. It was almost as if they were trying to savor each others touch...for the last time.
