Trapped, chapter 1

The sun shone fiercly in the sky, not a cloud to be seen. The birds chirpped gleefully in the animated, colourful Trees. Winter was truely over. The surronding woods were now friendly and welcoming, a complete contrast to the sinister, malevolent faces that just a few months previous were carved into the twisted, putrid trunks. The house seemed more pleasant too. The outside light showed no disturbance and filled the extensive, narrow hallway with it's gleaming white glow. The air outside was becoming denser, there would be a draught. There usually was at this time of the year.

As predicted the rainfall came to a complete halt and the water restriction began. Without the daily sprinklers the lawn became straw like. The car became a murky too: it sat in the garage, gathering dust and was begining to rust away, it's boot and bulging with camping equipment. Billie Joe had planned to take his son, Jakob on his very first camping trip and this draught was not about to get in the way of their plans.
" Is it time to go yet?" jakob asked for about the millionth time, finally receiving the answer he wanted. He ran excitedly towards the car ang clambered in as soon as his dad had unlocked the doors. He fastened his seatbelt and was instantly ready to go.

It wasn't long before they were slumped in a heap on the ground, gaving upon the tent they had just assembled with a captivated stare. Billie Joe and Jakob were both keen to explore further so they decided to continue deeper into the forest that was overloaded with Tree. After some time of fun and laughter they made their way back to the clearing where they had set up camp as the day as exceptionally hot.

On the way however, Billie Joe could sense something different in the air. Nothing was recognisably wrong but he felt it all the same, pulling jakob colser by his side. There was a slight breeze, sending a chill down his spine. Gradually this grew to a light wind and was wrong became apparent. Billie Joe turned his eyes North but already knew the message the wind had on it's breath. He waqs reading the story of the smoke. A smudge as big as a mountain was now spreading across the sky. It was the colour of dirty silver and growing with terrible speed. He knew it was bad news. The entire sky was dark now, the sun hidden by huge loops and swirls of copper colour cloud. The air reeked of smoke. The fire was spreading like an open fan as it roared through the woods like an express train. They had to escape. He grapped Jakob and held him close to his chest where his heart pounded heavily against it. He backed up like a wind up toy and lurched blindly forward, heading towards the car. They wouldnt have far to leave the blazing forest behind them but Billie Joe felt trapped all the same. He salvaged what he could of their belongings and pilled what they would need into the back of the car. He was acting on impluse now: not thinking about his next move. His heart was beating so fast and cold sweat soaked throungh his already sticky clothes. He looked at his son who had clasped his small, Trembling hands round his toy elephant, did he understand what was happening, how much danger they were actually facing?

Billie Joe drove and drove, not showing any signs of slowing down untill he could be sure of their safety. They reached a drive-by-lane and pulled over. Sirens wailed loudly in the distance but Billie Joe knew they wouldn't have much luck putting the fire out. He allowed himself to stop and his head slumped against the stearing wheel. His breathing slowly became less frantic and more controlled. His eyes snapped shut, his brain whizzing over all that had happened. The memory a misty daze. It was over. They were safe.
