The Disappearing Boy, chapter 21

Mike quickly pulled the covers away and jumped up, his heart racing. Sarah laid there on her side, staring at him with a confused look on her face.

"Is everything okay?" she slowly asked, chuckling a little to herself.

"Where am I?!" he shouted, completely ignoring her question.

"Calm down! People are still sleeping! We both stayed the night at Billie and Adrienne's house. This is the guest room..."

Mike looked down to see he had a pair of boxer shorts on and white socks.

"Did we--"

"No! We did not." Sarah interrupted him.

"Okay, good. Is Crystal here too?"

"That friend you brought along with you? She stayed here but might have left and went back to her house. Why?"

"Um, no reason." replied Mike as he slipped his jeans back on and pulled the black t-shirt he had on the night before over his head. "I'm gonna go. See you later, Sarah."

He tied his black converse and opened the white door leading to the hallway.

"Okay. I'll call--" she was cut off when he shut the door before hearing the rest of what she had to say.

Mike walked down the hall and into the kitchen to get a drink of water before he left. Adrienne stood at the island in a maroon colored robe, drinking out of a coffee mug. She smiled.

"So, so you like her?" she asked, smiling.

"Who? Oh, Sarah? Yeah, she's nice, I guess."

"What'd you two do when you went to bed? I saw her sneak into your room." inquired Adrienne, winking.

Mike smirked. "Well, I can't remember. You're quite nosey, you know? Nothing that you'd hope from what it sounds like. Just...slept. Nothing dirty."

"Uh-huh. Quit lying."

"I'm not lying! I should go though. See you later, Adie. And say hi to Billie for me, and that I enjoyed his little table dance," Mike joked.

"'Kay. Bye Mike!"

Arriving home, Mike walked through the garage door and plopped on the couch, turning on the tube. It's funny how two seconds into something you get bored right away. He sighed flipping through the channels. His hair was a mess, and taking a shower was an option.

"Eh, what the hell."

He got off of the couch, turned the T.V. off and walked out of the house and into the garage.

Soon after, he arrived at Crystal's house. Knocking on the door, he could hear footsteps and then fidgeting to get it unlocked. Slowly opening the door, Crystal poked her head outside and smiled. She was in pink, fuzzy pajama pants and a white little tank.

"Hey," she quietly said.

"Mind if I come in?"

She opened the door, letting him walk into the house, then shutting it. Mike sat on the couch.

"When did you leave Billie and Adrienne's?" asked Mike.

"Oh, around nine. You?"

"The clock said 11 when I left my house so not long before that."

The two sat there quietly.

"You want something to drink?" asked Crystal, trying to make the visit less awkward.

Mike nodded as she walked off into the kitchen. He listened the sound of her feet padding against the tile. His cell phone began to ring loudly, making him jump a little. He pulled the annoying object out of his pocket, looking at the number on the screen. Nothing he recognized.

"Hello?"

"Well, aren't you just the disappearing boy?" came a female voice.
It was Sarah. Mike let out a fake chuckle.

"Yeah, I guess I am. I can't talk right now. I have to go."

"Well, do you want to go out for dinner or something later?"

"Sure, I'll talk to you then." That was a lie.

They said their goodbyes and hung up. Crystal walked into the room with two coffee mugs in hand, carefully trying not to spill the hot drinks. She set them down on the coffee table in front of Mike and stood staring at the blonde bassist. Mike looked up at her, noticing her face seemed a little red and her eyes were brimmed with tears.

Sucking it up, Crystal smiled and sat down next to Mike, grabbing a cup and taking a small sip, then sticking her tongue out.

"It's still hot," she commented, nervously laughing to herself. "Was that Sarah?"

Mike hesitated to answer. "Yeah, that was her. I'm sorry for kind of leaving you alone at the party last night."

"It's okay. At least you had fun."

Mike shook his head. "I bet I would have had more fun if I spent more time with you."

Crystal laughed. "Uh-huh. Good attempt to pull yourself out of that one. I know it's fake, but it still makes me feel a little better."

Mike nodded. "I tried."

Crystal looked over at him, noticing every little line and such on the side of his face. "Do you like her?" she asked, breaking the silence.

Mike shrugged. "I'm not going to lie to you, she's sweet, but I don't really know her. But, to make things clear, we didn't sleep together."

Crystal nodded. "You should go." She said quickly, standing up and pulling him out of his seat.

"Why? Is everything okay?"

"No. Just go."

Crystal opened the door and helped Mike out. Turning around, Mike gazed at her for a few seconds.

"Bye, Mike."

"Before I go, can I just do one thing?"

He waited for a reply, but got nothing, so he leaned forward and gently kissed her on the cheek, taking in the sweet smell of her shampoo.

"Bye."

That's just what Crystal wanted. "Call me!" she quickly said, making Mike laugh as he got into his car.

"I will."

And he drove off.
