Walking Down The Line, chapter 1
She stood on the edge of the bridge, looking down at the choppy water below. All she had to do now was take one step, that's all it took to end it all. She looked up at the sky, her green fringe blowing in front of her eyes. The sun was shining, it was a beautiful day. Pity it meant nothing to her anymore.
Just then, a car drew up behind her. She didn't turn, just stared back down at the water. She heard a door open, and footsteps ont he path below. Still she didn't turn. Then someone spoke to her.
"Hey, what you doin' up there?"
"What do you think? Please leave me, I have to do this."
She was surprised to hear a giggle, oviously from a guy.
"You have to do this? That's so stupid. Surely you can't have it that bad? Your not in the world's eye all the time, are you? That is hard."
"What would you know about that though?"
"Well, if you turned round, you might see."
She did turn, but only saw the back of someone, someone in a black suit, with a brown mohican, leaning across the bonnet of an SUV.
"Who are you?"
"Just call me a friend."
"OK, but why did you stop? No-one else did."
"You like Green Day I take it?"
"Yeah, how did you know that?"
"You're wearing a Green Day hoodie."
She looked down, and smiled. She didn't know why, but there was something odd about talking to this strange guy, but it was comforting, as though she had spoken to him before.
"I like Green Day myself, I think they're great guys. They always look out for each other, no matter how tough things get," he said, still not facing her. "Surely you have friends who will look out for you?"
She shook her head, but he couldn't see, so she had to speak.
"No. All my friends abandoned me when I turned punk."
"That sucks. I tell you wat. If you come down, and don't jump, I'll be your friend. Does that sound good?"
"Yeah, but why would you do that for me? You don't even know me."
"You're a Green Day fan, that's good enough for me. Now come down."
She did, and he finally turned round. She gasped.
"Hi, I'm Tre."
She smiled, feeling better than ever before.
Things were going to get better...
