Waking Up, chapter 1

Where the fuck am I? He wondered, opening his eyes and looking around. He found himself in what looked like a living room. It was comfortably furnished with cushioned chairs and couches. Pushing off the comforter that had been thrown over him, he sat up.

A girl walked in with a backpack slung over her shoulder.
"Hey, decided to wake up then?" She asked smiling. He nodded slowly.
"Pardon me, where am I?" She just laughed.
"Suddenly all proper? Well, lets start off with the country: United States of America, in North America. The state--"
"Can you skip to the city?" He asked, trying to cope with his pounding head.
She smiled. "New York. Anything else?"
"How about what the hell am I doing here?" She laughed again; it was starting to get on his nerves.
"You seemed pretty pissed last night, so my sister brought you home from some party downtown... You're much nicer when you're drunk by the way. Seemed to think Angela smelled like cinnamon," He felt himself turn red. "So, what's your name?"
He frowned. "What's yours?"
"I asked you first,"
"So?" She laughed once more. "Ella. Your turn."
"Billie Joe."
"Well, nice to meet you, Billie Joe. Aspirins are in the cupboard to the right of the sink. I have to go to school," She made her way to the door.
"Hey, wait... " She turned, glancing at her watch. "Uh... When will you be back?"
"Two-ish, I really have to go," He nodded and watched her leave then flopped back down on the couch.

When Billie woke up again his headache had subsided a bit. He got up and walked in the direction the girl had come. He soon found himself in a large kitchen. He grabbed a few aspirins and searched for glasses.
"Left four cupboards," A voice said behind him. He turned, finding Ella walking by.
"How'd you know what I was looking for?"
"I've done my time with hung over people, you know!" Came the shout. She walked back in, "So. Done anything other than sleep?" He shook his head.
"How old are you?"
She sighed. "How old are you?"
"Are you like this?"
She nodded and hoisted herself on to the counter. "According to Angela, I'm a bitchy cow," Billie laughed.
"Great. Where is she anyway?" Ella frowned.
"Haven't any idea. She's always out with a new guy. Dropped you off here at 3 then left again. Mum's gonna be mad," She smiled and Billie laughed again.
"So, you say you go to school?"
"Yep, but not for much longer. Graduating in few months,"
"Not from high school, though, right?" She gave him a dirty look.
"No. NYU thanks." He smiled.
"Miss College Student. Wow,"
"Shut up. I'd rather not be disowned,"
"What?" She just shrugged.
"There's a lot of pressure about going to college is all. Angela dropped out, and Mum and Dad rarely talk to her or of her," Billie was confused.
"So if you don't go to college, you disappear?" Ella picked at her nails.
"Nah, our parents act like their children are showpieces," She looked at him with bright blue eyes. "I hate it," Billie nodded.
"So, then how old are you?"
Ella smiled. "22, in one week."
"Oooh, happy early birthday then,"
"And you?"
"22" There was a pause. "Hey, um, I need to call my friends, do you have a phone?"
She nodded. "Yep, on the end table near where you were sleeping," She jumped off the counter and went to fridge while he went to go call.
He called the hotel he supposed to be staying at.
"Hey, Mike?"
"Uh... Yeah?" Came the sleepy answer.
"When do we leave?"
"What?"
"When do we leave New York?" Mike grumbled on the other side.
"Driver quit. Have to wait for another one. Where were you last night?"
"Somewhere else. How long will finding another take?"
"I dunno. Call me later."
"It's fucking 3 in the afternoon, Mike! Wake up!" More grumbling.
"I have a massive hang--" The lights went out.
"Hello? Mike?"
He hung up and walked back into the kitchen.
"Do the lights always go out?" Ella was making a sandwich.
"Nope. Just for you. Want one?" She asked holding one up.
"Yeah, sure. Aren't you afraid?" She laughed.
"Of course not. Not since I was three anyway. Are you, little Billie?"
"Fuck off," But she only laughed more. Her laugh wasn't so bad any more. "And when did I say you could call me Billie?"
"You didn't," She replied, smiling. She handed him a plate. "But it's more fun that way."
He smiled back.
