By The Way, chapter 2

Cadence shoved her shaky hands into her jeans pockets, the soft October wind blowing against the bitter expression she wore on her face. This was it. This was time to exchange their last minute good-byes. She opened the car and sat in the passenger seat, pulling the window down and smiled nervously. Billie was sitting a few feets from her, in the stairs outside of his parent's house, his legs pulled up to his chin and his crossed arms resting upon them, his face half hidden in his arms as if he was pouting. And in this case, Cadence knew he probably was. A sad smile crept onto her lips.

"So... this is it." She spoke first, suprised her voice wasn't shaking. "It's been a fun five years." She added, trying to make it sound matter-of-factly but failling miserably. "Too bad it has to end this way."

"Who said it had to end?" Billie Joe noted the sad smile on Cadence's lips and somehow guessed what she was about to say.

"I did, Billie." She paused, reconsidering what she had just said. "Yeah, I think we'd be better off just leaving things like they are instead of trying to carry them on. You know how hard it's gonna be trying to call you, you'll be on tour and everything..."

He looked away, not thinking that was a decent answer, not thinking they should break this up, truly believing they'd manage to pull it off. But it didn't matter anymore. He was giving up, too desperate and feeling to pathetic to speak up. If Cadence wanted to leave him, then she could leave him. He didn't give a damn anymore.

She sighed, daring to lock her gaze with his. She knew how angry he was at her. A sigh escaped her locked lips, but she was lost for words. The house was almost done beeing emptied, they'd soon be leaving to the airport... and she'd soon be leaving him.

"Emm... I'll call you when I get there."

"You don't need to."

"Yeah, well, I'll do it anyways. We can catch up. Set things straight."

"I thought we'd just done that."

"Great then, I won't call you." She replied flatly. A silence fell over them. An awkward silence they'd never met with yet.

Billie sighed and rested his face in his hands. So, she wanted to leave him. She could walk away and do just that. He was too desperate to even care. He was too desperatly in love with her to try and change her mind. She'd always been so stuborn too. He pulled himself to his feet and waved at her, entering the house and slamming the door behind him.

She'd never left anywhere with Billie Joe pissed off at her, and this hadn't been a good time to try. Looking out the plane window, she felt a painfull stab of regret comming at her. She was hours away from him now, and a few hours 'till Vancouver. In other words, she was litteraly in the middle nowhere. Feeling to nervous to sit down, she walked off to the bathrooms. The claustrophobic little room with a toilet inside in the back of the plane. She'd never been fond of plane bathrooms, but she wasn't in a mood to critic their lack of hygiene. Cadence stepped down the narrow way only to find the bathroom was occupied. "First class then." She thought and went the opposite direction.

She pulled the little curtain that separated the two plane classes, looking over the top of flight attendant's heads to look for the bathroom. Great. Occupied too. Where was she to relieve her bladder needs, then? Just then, the bathroom door swung open and hit her right in the face. She barely had the time to realise how embarassing her situation was before she fell to the floor, swearing she saw little birdies fly in circles over her head.

"Oops." She heard a voice say. A few moments later she was beeing swept off the floor.

"Hi." She said lamely, accidently meeting his eyes as stumbled around and tried to regain her balance. And wow, he had nice eyes. Cadence felt a dumb smile creep onto her lips and tried her best to look away casually. 'Say something, say something.' She begged him in her head. And he did.

"Can I pass? You're kinda standing in the way."

Cadence felt her cheeks turn bright red, the color even more enhanced because it matched her hair. "S... sure."

He brushed past her and was off to his seat, leaving behind a feeling of utmost embarassement and guilt in Cadence's heart. She was supposed to be thinking of Billie Joe right now. Not a random guy she'd met on a plane and who'd smashed a door - for God's sake - in her face. Ontop of everything, she'd started peeing in her pants. Rushing to the bathroom, she guessed it just had to be a bad day.
