By The Way, chapter 3

This was a bad day indeed.

Cadence figured they'd lost her luggage, seeing as they still hadn't shown up after half an hour of waiting. She figured she could live without it. Who needed underwears anyway? She left the airport, if that was possible, even more bitter that when she'd left her hometown, hours earlier. Leaving her parents to start unpacking things, she managed to find her cellphone.

Cadence used to call Billie Joe everyday, it was part of her daily routine. Which kind of explained how weird it felt beeing stressed about dialing his number - which she knew by heart of course -. Shifting her weight from one foot to another nervously, she waited for someone to answer on the other line.

"Hello?"

"Billie?" She replied quickly, with perhaps a little too much enthusiasm.

"Cadence? Oh, hi. What's up?"

She noted the lack of care in his voice, but prefered to ignore it. "I just got here. the house is still empty and everything, and long-distance calls are pretty expensive but I just had to let you know I made it here alive."

"Great." Again. Lack of care.

"Right. You still mad at me?"

"No." He replied a little too quickly. "But I got to go. We have a gig tonight. Bye Cadie."

Standing all alone in her empty kitchen, Cadence swallowed the lump in her throat. For a moment, she closed and opened her mouth repeatedly, trying to get words out but only emiting a soft chocking sound.

"You okay, Cadence?"

"S...sure. I mean, yeah, I'm fine. Bye Billie. I love you..?"

Silence on the other end. Cadence bit her lips as if it would help take back the words she'd just spoken. It now sounded as if it was Billie Joe's turn to choke. She could easily guess what were the two replies flying throught his mind right now. 'I love you too, Cadie.' or 'Yeah, me too, too bad you broke things off.'. She wasn't quite sure which one she wanted to hear anymore.

"I got to go. Bye, Cadence."

None of the above.

Time flies when you're busy. Snow was falling by the time the house was completely unpacked. Things were still incredibly unstable for Cadence, though. She'd spoken to Billie Joe twice since the last phone call. Both conversations were short an meaningless. She could guess Billie Joe's bitterness would linger for another month or so. But he had to get over it soon, wouldn't he? Perhaps they could move on as friends. She could'nt quite defy what they currently were. She remembered saying she wanted to break up before leaving to Vancouver... but that was before she told him she loved him over the phone.

But Billie Joe wasn't always on her mind. She was attending a public school to finish her last year in Highschool. Billie was already done with school, even if he was a month younger than Cadie, he'd dropped out a while ago. But Cadence was planning to graduate from Highschool. Adapting to her new classes wasn't exactly fun. Her first day in Versant High was pretty much a total disaster.

She barged in late during her first class -bio- only to find out she'd already met with her assigned lab partner.

"You're from... the plane, aren't you?"

Cadence stared at him, feeling the same embarassement she'd felt back on the plane. She would have prefered if he hadn't remembered her. "Right... I'm Cadence."

"Dave."

She stared at his chesnut eyes for a moment, trying to take in a mental picture of what he looked like. He had blond hair that fell slightly over his ears, his right fringe was tucked to the left side of his face in a strategically stylish way. As for his height, he stood clearly more than a head taller than Cadence, but she'd never been really tall, barely reaching 5'2. In other words, he wasn't tall nor too small, he had that exact normal height. And he was fairly built too. Dave was that perfect balance between everything.

Cadence smiled weakly and gripped the edge of her desk for support, hopping her Bio class' disecting-frog essay was responsible for the knee-weakening feeling she felt.
