Age Is Only A Number!, chapter 16
Katie later that day and saw her texts, she saw the one from Mike and got worried. Any time anyone visit New York they wanted to talk about something important, likewise the only time Katie, Abi and Aaron went down to Berkeley was for somewhere to stay or to talk to there family about something. It was just the rule. She told Abi about it and she was just as worried as Katie was.
Katie phoned Mike back on his cell in and answered was a cute little voice saying "Hi, who is this?"
"It's Katie, Mike's friend, and who are you?" Katie answered, the voice was so cute and so like Mike's when he was younger but more girly. "It's Estelle, are you Katie Burke." Estelle replied.
"Yes why" Katie asked she didn't know what Estelle knew about her.
"Daddy talks a lot about you, he always smiles when anyone talks about you" Estelle replied. Katie smiled, the girl was cute and it flattered her that Mike smiled at her mention. "So, where is daddy now?" Katie asked.
"Erm, I think he is at court with mummy, things aren't going well between them" Estelle told Katie in a sad tone, Katie's heart broke to hear this girl so sad about her parents divorcing. She said "Don't worry everything will be fine trust me."
"Thanks, I think I'm hanging around with you when I come to New York" Estelle excitedly told Katie. This made Katie excited to see Mike now, she couldn't believe how cute Estelle was, and she was only 2/3 years old. "That would be great, maybe I could show you round New York."
Estelle giggled and said "Yay, I have to go but here's daddy."
Mike took the phone from Estelle, he just came from out of the shower and had a towel wrapped round waist. His blonde hair dripping wet down his smooth cheeks. He said into the receiver "Hey Katie." Just hearing his voice again kinda made Katie fall in love with him all over again.
"Hey Mike" Katie replied smiling.
"So how's life and all?" Mike asked, he still partly yearned for Katie and lately it was getting worse. "Great, jobs going well and I got a boyfriend, his name is Cole" Katie told Mike, it was then Mike couldn't believe his eyes. Katie had a boyfriend, his heart dropped the person he most wanted and at one point wanted him had moved on. "Is he nice then?" Mike asked in a fatherly manner.
"Of course he is, he's a really sweet guy I'll get you too to meet when you come, which is when?" Katie asked, she was twiddling her hair in the process. She hadn't twiddled her hair since 15 and whenever she was around Mike she did. "I'm coming next Friday" Mike answered.
Katie realised that Friday was tomorrow, she widened her eyes she was no where near ready. She had to clean the apartment, make sure Abi was gallivanting off with Dave to protect her and Aaron wouldn't say anything stupid. She then mentally sighed and said "Cool, can't wait for it."
"Same, I gotta go Estelle is calling me" Mike replied, Estelle was by his side and tugging on his leg. He ruffled her curly brown hair. "Ok, and Mike... " Katie started.
"Ye" Mike replied.
"Sorry about your divorce" Katie said in a sad tone.
"That's ok it was bound to happen" Mike told Katie. He kneeled down to Estelle and hugged her, he stroked her hair and kissed her forehead. "Ok, well bye" Katie said.
"Bye" Mike quietly said.
He clicked off the phone and put it in its place. He picked Estelle up and put her on the couch. He kneeled down in front of Estelle and kissed her temple and whispered "Don't worry everything will be fine."
Katie put the phone down and sighed, she looked at the time it was 6.30pm and Aaron was coming back from work any second now. She sat down and watched cartoons, she didn't know what she just got herself into but knew it wouldn't end in the best of situations. The last time she and Mike saw each other she wasn't in the best of situations and the time she had with Tre was a huge mistake, it was only a few months ago as well. She contemplated the situation but couldn't for long as Aaron came through the door.
"Hey Katie" Aaron cheerily greeted.
"Hey Aaron, oh ye by the by Mike is coming to New York next weekend" Katie tried to pass by him.
"So we're fucked basically" Aaron contemplated. The fact was he was right.
"Yes, but think of it this way, I can't sleep with him I already have a boyfriend" Katie joked. Aaron uncomfortably laughed and then took some orange juice out of the fridge and put the carton to his mouth, he was about to drink it before Katie told him without even seeing him "You drink outta that carton it will be the end of you."
It was always freaky to Aaron how she and Abi did that, just knew what he was doing without even looking. When he was in the bathroom admiring himself in mornings he would find Abi outside shouting "Stop looking at yourself I need the fucking shower you little homo." Also whenever he was about to use Katie's toothbrush or hairbrush because he couldn't find his own he'd find Katie shouting "Brushes that are of mine are out of bounds to you, find yours or find your hair unbrushed and your teeth yellow."
He put the carton in the fridge and plonked himself down on the sofa and said "So, when is Mike coming."
"Next Week" Katie told him.
Katie woke up the next Friday and was in boxers and a t-shirt with 'Jim fixed it for me' on the front, she struggled to get out of bed knowing that she had to face work. She went into the kitchen and tried to get herself some cornflakes, instead of pouring milk she poured apple juice. The doorbell rang and she got up and opened the door. She brushed the hair out of her face and saw Mike there on his own. He was smiling and said "You look awake." Katie just mumbled at Mike the only full sentence he could hear was "fucking mock me, ass."
He came in and saw the apple juice and cornflakes, he always knew Katie was strange but this topped it. It was even stranger when she sat down and put her spoon in the bowl and ate some. Her face was priceless to Mike; it was a classic sign of a tired Katie barely able to make simple cereal work. She swallowed and pushed the bowl away from her. She got herself a drink of water and gestured for Mike to sit down.
He sat down and saw Katie's butt as she bent down for a glass, he felt like a pervert looking but couldn't help himself. Yes she was 22 and he was 27 but it's a free world isn't it. Katie sat down and asked Mike "So what are you here for?"
"Can't I just be here for a visit why does it have to be for something" Mike retaliated.
"Because your human, its human instinct to only to go far to someone else to get something" Katie answered, she yawned and rubbed her eyes, she was just so cute to Mike. "Okay okay I am here for something, well more to talk to you." Mike said giving in.
"About what?" Katie asked waking up.
"About the thought of you and me" Mike answered. This shocked Katie, she didn't even think there was anything between her and Mike.
"Elaborate" Katie asked.
"Well we have always had a connection, you can't deny that and well over the last few months I have kinda fell in love with you" Mike explained. Katie couldn't believe it, now he wanted to get together, not 7 years ago when she asked, not even a couple of years back at Thanksgiving. Instead now, when she had a boyfriend. "Well I don't know what to say to that, well first things first I have a boyfriend-" Katie stuttered out. Mike saw this ending badly. She carried on "-well we're around 3000 miles apart doesn't help and finally I don't love you anymore."
Mike half-expected this, he also completely forgot that she had a boyfriend. Mike dropped his head down in embarrassment, Katie put her hand on his and told him "I'm sorry, I feel like an idiot but I care for Cole so much."
Mike looked up, he saw Katie smile it was the same as when she was little but she wasn't a little girl anymore she was a woman. Mike leaned in and kissed Katie, it was like heaven on earth for Mike. Katie pulled away and said "This is wrong."
"But so right" Mike replied leaning in again and kissing Katie. How could she resist. This was the man she fell in love with at 15 and stole her heart. Her cell rang, she pulled away and answered it and saw it was Cole.
"Hey Gorgeous" Cole greeted Katie. She fell back to reality and hearing Cole's voice was amazing.
"Hey Cole, so what do I owe this early bird call" Katie asked she started biting her thumbnail a habit she had to give up. Mike looked at her face; so pure so happy he knew if he did anything to hurt hers and Cole's relationship he would never be forgiven.
"I just wanna ask you out to a special date on Sunday" Cole answered very sure of himself. "Wait is it our 3rd date this weekend" Katie asked. Mike didn't know what she was on about.
"Yep" Cole enthusiastically said.
"Great, look I have to go but I love you so much" Katie said, she was so excited now.
She put the phone down and sat down next to Mike. "So you're getting so serious the 3rd date" Mike sarcastically told Katie.
"Cole and I are taking it slow, and anyways the third date is important to me" Katie told Mike, she saw his face and just rolled her eyes. She got up to wake Aaron; she went inside his room and saw 3 cages with rats in them. She hated rats and was scared of them. She screamed and ran out of his room. Mike saw her and she grabbed onto him. Aaron came out of his room and said "What's all the screaming about?"
"Easy those diseases in your room" Katie retaliated.
Aaron yawned and said "The rats are not diseases and they are for my social work."
"Dude, you should've told me then I could of used the rat tonic I got at Christmas" Katie told Aaron still grabbed onto Mike. Aaron rolled his eyes and said "We got you that because you were so paranoid not for actual use."
"Beside the point, look just keep them well away from me but if you get rabies it's not my fault" Katie told Aaron.
"Look I wanted to tell you Abi forced me not to we discussed it yesterday after you went" Aaron told Katie.
The day went as smoothly as it could go; Mike went out with Katie and Estelle to catch up. They went walking in the hustle and bustle of Time Square. Although Katie lived on the outskirts of the centre of the city she decided to go all out for Mike and Estelle. They went around New York, saw Central Park, and went up the Twin Towers. Katie loved seeing people get excited over the things she saw every day.
She met Cole that evening, they were going to the movies to see "10 things I hate about you" ye it was a chick flick but Cole didn't mind one bit. Afterwards they got some ice-cream and went back to Cole's place. His roommates were out and they had the apartment all to themselves. The 3rd date was the date they would give their love to each other. It was perfect for Katie and for Cole.
Katie went back to her apartment the next day glowing. Mike had a wild guess what happened and confronted her. "Katie, why did you do it with Cole?" Mike asked
"What, are you being serious about this, it's my choice?" Katie answered swaying away from her good mood.
"Yes but it's the wrong one, why waste your first time now?" Mike asked, he never knew Katie wasn't a virgin anymore; she laughed and said "Me. Virgin. Heck no, I lost my virginity ages ago."
Mike was shocked. How come she never told him, he thought they were close.
Mike got closer to Katie and softly kissed her lips. She had no control of what would happen next, she felt helpless. It was like she was 15 again and loved Mike; they stumbled to her bedroom and made love on the floor. Katie woke up in Mike's arms and realised what an idiot she had been. She had a boyfriend whom she loved. She screamed and Mike woke up and groaned "What the fuck are you screaming about?"
"Easy we're naked and we just did it" Katie shrieked.
"We can't of, we just can't of" Mike said with his mouth gaping.
Katie reached for her bra and underwear and put them on quickly. She stood up and searched for her clothes. Mike in turn got his clothes. Once they were fully dressed Mike decided to leave, they walked to the door Katie still with her head down. Katie opened the door for Mike, before he left he said "I'm sorry, I didn't mean for this too happen."
Katie popped her head up and replied "Promise me one thing"
"What?" Mike asked
"Don't tell anyone this happened" Katie answered. Mike nodded his head and left Katie.
Over the next few days Katie didn't feel well. She was throwing up every few minutes, she felt hungrier than ever and whenever she saw a mother and daughter she couldn't help but feel happy. Abi noticed this and checked if Katie had a temperature but she didn't. She took things to the next level. She got Katie a pregnancy test.
"Abi this is stupid I'm not pregnant" Katie exclaimed from the bathroom. Abi was outside at the door and just rolled her eyes. She knocked on the door and asked Katie "How long does it take to piss on a stick?"
"My hands are shaky, there is a chance I have a baby inside me, I think I can take my time" Katie shouted back. Abi just sighed. A couple of minutes later Katie came out holding the stick in her hand waiting. They sat down Katie still holding the stick, her future was right in front of her all it had to do was go blue and everything would change. It started changing colour and Katie was quick to cover her eyes. "Tell me what it says" Katie said hand over eyes.
Abi waited for it to turn colour completely, she saw the result and said to Katie "Mazal Tov." Katie was overwhelmed with emotions, all she could do was scream "Shit." She was extremely happy but it was that word that first came to her. Abi hugged her and she hugged Abi back. They let go and Katie ran to the bathroom to hurl. All that was running through her brain was one thing.
