Age Is Only A Number!, chapter 4
Katie's life went on without Mike, she saw him on the day before he was going to leave for tour, the two families had a dinner together to see Mike for the last time until he came back. Katie didn't talk to Mike and Mike didn't talk to Katie. Billie Joe and Tre were there aswell, they also didn't talk to Katie but they actually wanted to but Mike banned them for petty reasons. After the dinner Katie's younger brother and sister Ben and Jessica went to play in the living room and Katie went to the basement where her guitar was. She picked it up and started playing without the amp on the old couch. Mike was talking to his folks, he didn't notice Billie Joe and Tre go downstairs to the basment to talk to Katie secretly. They went downstairs and Katie noticed that they were there and said to them "Why are you down here aren't you banned from talking to me from Mike?"
"We just wanna talk as friends okay, fuck Mike" Billie Joe replied
"Sure, theres loads of room on the couch but be warned yoiu might sit on something nasty or find something nasty" Katie warned them, hesitantly Billie Joe and Tre sat down, Billie Joe was okay but Tre sat in gum and saw that his trousers were forever ruined. Billie Joe started the conversation by saying "So hows your arm?"
"Its fine, everyone in school believes me that I banged it and schools out anyway in a few days" Katie answered
"Great, so are you and Mike talking in any way?" Tre asked
"Nope, he doesn't even look at me, and don't worry I couldn't care less he made me realise a lot of things I'm just a burnout really" Katie answered Tre putting her guitar down.
Tre stood up and tried to clear the gum off his butt then getting it on his hands, Katie noticed this and gestured upstairs and Tre followed her up the stairs. Billie Joe picked up the guitar and played a tune that he made up on the spot and then he repeated what Katie said in her head 'I'm just a burnout' and that turned into 'I'm just burning out' and he sung it to the tune. He thought to himself that there needed something in front of that to make it clearer, then he said to himself 'I'm not a grown-up' but it just didn't fit so he changed it to 'I'm not growing up' and sung it to his tune. He then sung both lines "I'm not growing up, I'm just burning out". He needed something else to emphasize it so he looked around for inspiration and saw a little fake skull keyring that also had a body to it and he thought of the two lines 'And I stepped in line to walk amongst the dead' and he then sung the whole thing together "I'm not growing up, I'm just burning out, And I stepped in line, To walk amongst the dead" he decided to carry it on later. Tre and Katie came downstairs Katie still scraping off the last bits of gum and Billie Joe quickly puit the guitar down. Katie examined Tre's butt and scraped the last bit of gum off and dragged him by his jeans pocket and faced Tre's butt to Billie Joe. Billie Joe said simply trying to avoid the ass in front of him "Why is Tre's ass in front of my face?"
"Look I got all the gum off, that barely ever happens first time, the trousers I'm wearing went through a few washes before it all came out" Katie sqeauled pulling Tre's butt away from Billie Joe.
It was at least 6 months before the guys saw Katie again. They came back from tour and went to Mike's house to greet his family and put the instruments away. Mike got out his keys and unlocked the door, as he opened it he heard people screaming "Welcome Home" and saw the guys' families and friends with a banner saying 'Welcome Home Green Day'. They were all surprised all they expected was to come to a house with food that didn't look like it was going to eat you back, they hugged there family and close friends. As Mike let go of his mother he noticed someone in the corner of his eye, it was Katie she was talking to Abi, Abi was there because she is a good friend of the Armstrongs. He saw them and Katie changed so much since they last saw her, she and Abi still looked like twins but not so much, Katie had her train tracks out and Abi had her retainer out. Her hair was shortened up to her shoulders, she had got to grasps with make-up and she had grown up from the little clingy 15 year old he knew to a 16 year old girl that looked beautiful, Mike didn't love her but he had to admit she looked beautiful. Granted she still talked about Star Trek a lot and was at that very second talking about the latest episode with Abi but it seemed less wierd. Mike went up to Katie and disturbed there conversation on who's cuter Captain Kirk or Spock and said "Hey Katie, long time no see"
Katie noticed him and shook his hand and replied "Ye, you've changed a bit, that hair is even freakier than before" Mike took a tiny bit of offence and touched his hair a bit insecurely but then noticed she was joking and said "You've changed aswell, no braces, same with you Abi you've changed a bit, you two still look like twins though" Abi and Katie looked at eachother with the same expression that they always had when someone thought they looked like twins it was a mixture of annoyance and thinking that person was stupid Abi then said facing Mike "We get that all the time its annoying, we never knew at the tender age of 3 we'd end up like eachother"
"So Mike, I thought you hated me and not talking to me" Katie said going off subject giving Mike a smug smile, Mike saw it and felt like an idiot, Abi gave him a smug smile aswell, it was like they had one brain in two bodies it scared the fuck out of Mike he hesitantly said "I-er...but-erm-ur-erm" Katie just rolled her eyes and her and Abi swiftly turned round and walked off carrying on there conversation about who was cuter Captain Kirk or Spock...and Spock somehow won. Mike was gobsmacked he just didn't believe that happened he stayed in the same position for a second and was shocked, it was the first time a 16 year old girl had just beaten him. His hand was holding a drink right in front of him and was half-full. Billie Joe and Tre just walked up to him and Tre took the drink out of his hand and noticed the hand stayed the same, Tre sniffed the drink to find out what it was and if it had funny stuff to make Mike like that and then said "Ooh Fruit Punch" and chugged it down in a few seconds while Billie Joe inspected Mike and waved his hand in front of Mike hoping for an answer. Tre on the other hand knew what to do and used the punch just chugged in his throat and burped right into the bassists ear. Mike's brain came back to reality and was disgusted and slapped his small friend in the head saying "Dude you know I can't stand burps in my ear" Tre tended to his head and Billie Joe decided to be the parental figure of the duo and asked Mike "What was up you just were standing there?"
"Long story, have you seen Katie?" Mike asked
"Ye she has changed a lot" Billie Joe answered
"She has mentally aswell, that girl can bark worse than she can bite" Mike replied, he assumed Billie Joe was surprised and asked "What did she do?"
"We were talking normally and she just said swiftly 'So Mike I thought you hated me and not talking to me' she and Abi smugly smiled and walked off" Mike explained, Tre then stepped in and replied "Woah Katie beat you down"
Mike then said "Ye and it was damn sexy"
