Age Is Only A Number!, chapter 6
As Green Day were going to start recording with Warner Bros/Reprise they just had to get all their songs together and in an order, Katie was working to the bone, her art teacher since her scholarship arrived has got her doing extra time at lunchtime and after school, doing anything from drawing fruit to doing an essay on cubism. Her art class couldn't believe what had happened, they knew she loved art but didn't know a scholarship would come out of it, some people even got jealous of her. One of them was called Jade, any waking moment of the day she made shit for Katie, she made fun of Katie, hit her a lot and framed her for pranks she didn't commit. Katie didn't know why Jade picked on her just knew now because of the scholarship it would become worse.
It was Wednesday and it was the day Katie had free from art, she was happy that day and even did art for pure fun but only did doodles instead of actual art. Jade decided that Katie's free day should be turned into misery. She went up to Katie at break, Katie was with Aaron discussing whether or not Aaron should grow his hair out when Jade punched Katie in the side of the face she didn't even know Jade was there she was too busy having a life. She fell down, she wasn't unconscious though but did take her a few seconds to get back up with Aaron's help. And she couldn't help but say, "What the fucking hell was that for?"
"That's for getting that scholarship when I deserve one more than you." Jade answered stupidly, trying to be tougher than she was. Katie tendered to her cheek that was now red and told Jade "Dude, I need that scholarship, my mum and dad had a tough time sending my older brother and we might not send my younger brother and sister to university". Jade thought this reason was stupid and worthless and showed it by saying "Well my dad cheated out on my mum so there's no chance for me". Katie just stared at Jade for a moment before arguing back. "This isn't a competition between who's got the worse situation, I have worked my ass off for this scholarship, still am, this is my free day and I don't want it ruined by fighting with you." And as Katie finished another punch went her way this time on the front of her face, she fell over again and was very nearly unconscious, she stayed on the floor for a minute half sitting half laying there. She stood up still quite dizzy and stumbling a lot, Aaron decided he needed some input and shouted at Jade. "Could you just leave Katie alone for once bitch!"
"No way, I deserve a scholarship not her I work so hard in lessons." Jade lied
"You don't work hard, yes maybe on being sent out but other than that you're a delinquent." Aaron argued. Katie stepped in she was a bit more collected and wasn't stumbling everywhere and said quite quietly, "Guys stop fighting I couldn't care less I just wanna get to science in peace."
"No-fucking-way, you're a bitch" Jade replied punching Katie in the stomach and walking off with her friends, Katie fell to the floor and grabbed her stomach, she felt like her lunch was turning over in her stomach and that her small intestine decided to knot itself. Aaron helped Katie up, it was luckily fate that Abi just came round the corridor corner and saw the state Katie was in and helped her get up, with an arm around each of her best friends shoulders Katie got to the medical room. She didn't dare tell the nurse what had happened because otherwise it could be much worse; all she said was that she had an asthma attack and that she bumped into a wall hard while coughing her head off. The nurse only half-believed it as she did the other times Katie had an 'asthma attack', she knew Katie had asthma just knew that asthma attacks didn't result in someone bumping into things. She let Katie stay however but Aaron and Abi had to leave, Katie thankfully sat next to them so it was no problem.
She sat in the medical room for a while and decided to listen to music on her CD player; the nurse had gone for a while so basically Katie could do what she wanted. She was listening to Smashing Pumpkins when she looked out the door window and saw Jade there, she didn't know how she got there but she did. Jade opened the door and came through; she slapped the CD out of Katie's hand. She snarled at Katie "You're such a pussy, I'm so gonna enjoy this." The room was fairly big and there was another room next door with a big window to jump out of and thank the lord they were on the ground floor. Katie grabbed her CD player and head phones stuffed it into her bag and ran for her life to the window. Jade was too big to fit through the window so she went out the door and to the next entrance which wasn't that far away. Katie ran out of the school passing the old security guard and then the newer one who was from Israel and was originally from the Israeli Army the newer one stopped her and asked, "Hey you kid what are you doing?"
"I'm surviving death, please let me go I'll do anything, she'll get me if I don't." Katie said panicking, the security guard Tomer understood where she was coming from and let her go just after Jade got out the school shouting, "Katie I'm not done with you"
"Run along and I'll sort her out." Tomer said at Katie she was already down the street and shouted, "Thanks I owe you so much"
She ran like she never ran before, she wasn't ever good at PE but life or death she could run like no other girl ever could. She was well away from the school, she somehow ran while limping from earlier when Jade hit her. She stopped and sat down on a bench that was near her. Tre was coming round the corner and saw Katie, he went up to her and saw she was crying her eyes out. "What happened?" he asked, Katie kept her head down but eventually looked up and Tre saw her black eye and bruised face and she answered, "I hate school"
"Who the hell done this to you?" Tre asked putting an arm around Katie's shoulder, she cried into his before saying "This bully Jade, she's jealous 'cause I got a scholarship and she thinks she deserves one."
"No, she doesn't you've worked your ass off for this, look how about this why don't we go out, just us two, not a date... well unless you want it to be" Tre suggested, Katie nodded and wiped some tears off her face and replied "Sure, maybe not date but hang out just us two sounds cool."
"I'm free tonight what about you?" Tre asked
"Same, its good my mum won't see the state I'm in right now." Katie answered, Tre wiped away some tears from Katie's face with his thumb, he looked at her for a moment, what a young woman she had become; she wasn't that little geeky 15 year old that had a crush on Mike and followed him round like a limpet, she was instead a young woman who had single-handily got a early scholarship and who didn't need men. He checked the time quickly and noticed he was late for a recording he said to Katie "Look I have to go, 8:00 tonight then, meet by the beach"
"Sure, why the beach?" Katie questioned while Tre stood up
"You'll see, it won't be your average hang-out." answered Tre mysteriously when he started walking off.
He got to the studio and found Billie Joe and Mike there with their equipment, Tre quickly got into his position on the drums and got his sticks out, and they were still staring at him just turned around as he ran to the drums. Tre couldn't help but be mystified by why they were staring it was just his nature so he said, "What I'm here?"
Billie Joe replied to that statement by saying, "What girl was it this time?"
"No girl... well yes a girl but it's not like that" Tre answered.
"Dude you've been late to every recording mainly 'cause of a girl, stop fucking girls your always late" Billie Joe reminded him, Tre was a bit hurt by the singers statement, he felt like an idiot but still retaliated "This time I didn't fuck her it was nothing like that, all we did was talk, you don't even know who it is". He noticed his first mistake by saying that they didn't know who it was and it came back to him by Mike asking the inevitable question "Who is it then?" giving Tre a smug smile Tre second mistake came around without him even knowing when he said "No one you know." Giving Mike the tale-tell sign of lying by looking down to the floor giving no eye contact at all. Mike just jokingly said, "Well it's not like your going out with Katie", the drummers third mistake came and he noticed it after he did it. While Mike was laughing Tre regained eye contact with Mike, when he looked at Tre he noticed it was true. With one motion not even caring that he had his bass on him he leapt to Tre, grabbed him and put him up to a wall and shouted at him "What did you do to Katie?"
Tre was bewildered by Mike's behaviour, usually he wasn't this violent except for the rare occasion. He said, "Nothing we just talked, she was bullied earlier and ran out from school, I talked to her and we're hanging out tonight". He just made three mistakes in the past few minutes that had him on a wall surely he wouldn't make a fourth but he did and said, "It's not like you're in love with her". That was the final straw for Mike he let go of Tre and walked out of the studio Billie Joe called after Mike "Mike get back here, this costs money you know."
Mike just screamed, "Fuck off I don't care."
