Age Is Only A Number!, chapter 9
It was the big day. Woodstock '94. Both girls ad been looking forward to it for ages, they had been discussing outfit plans for a while, they weren't girly girls but they did want to look good. The day finally came and neither girl had agreed on an outfit, they knew to have no spiked jewellery because it would hurt others, they knew no flat shoes because there feet would hurt, they knew to not have a tight top otherwise they wouldn't breath that well, they knew what not to wear but didn't know what to wear. They were at Katie's house with two huge piles of clothes, one of clothes they weren't going to wear and one of clothes they might wear, it was mind-boggling... neither girl knew they had so much clothes. Katie was just putting some jeans on when Abi was sitting on a chair; Abi came across a sketch and two photos, both of Mike topless with a bass in hand. "I thought you gave up the obsession" Abi told Katie holding the photos in her hand, Katie saw them and replied "I thought it was a nice shot, it's my final piece for my project on 'Identity', its not like he'll ever find out anyway." Abi put the photo down and carried on helping her best friend with picking out an outfit.
Billie Joe, Mike and Tre were far from excited; they were a mix of nervous and wanting to get it over with. By that time Abi and Katie were at the concert and Green Day was after the band on at that time. The guys had been hearing that the crowd were getting a bit restless, it was the afternoon and a hot one at that and naturally when you have 250,000 odd people in a tight hot space you might get some restlessness. No-one knew of the event about to come. Abi and Katie were squished and were hot beyond any belief possible, they were both wearing t-shirts thankfully but they were still as hot as hell. Green Day looked from the sidelines at the crowd, they had a tough audience to please, and none of them had seen anything that big they had only played in small nightclubs and a couple of actual concerts.
Nerves had got the better of them for the first time ever.
The band before them came off and the singer said to them simply "Good Luck" Billie Joe just gave him a look saying 'I need something better than luck'. They took deep breaths and ran onto stage and grabbed there instruments. The crowd was roaring at that point, Billie Joe saw Katie and Abi at the front screaming their heads off, it made him feel a tiny bit better and he started singing 'Basket Case'. All three guys felt such an adrenaline rush; it was like being on cloud 9. Abi and Katie carried on screaming along with singing along with the words, they noticed the crowd behind them were getting more restless by the second, instead of screaming lyrics they were screaming things like "Fuck Off" and shouting boo's as well. It was starting to turn into a riot, not helped by the fact the security encouraged them.
It was then the first piece of mud was thrown.
It started as a little mud fight between the crowds, then it turned into a big mud fight, Green Day could see a mud slide type of affair in the middle of the crowd. They tried not to get worried while playing 'When I come around' but they were scared shitless. It started coming on the stage, Billie Joe decided to joke around with it and put it in his mouth. The mud just started flinging more, Abi and Katie were scared as hell, they had never been in anything like this before, and sure they had been at a couple of protests but left before it got messy. The shoving started to get harder, the mud came pouring on Abi and Katie, and they didn't know what to do, should they go with the mud fight or just stand around and hope it dies down. It just got worse and worse, Green Day didn't know what to do so they kept playing for the fuck of it, Billie Joe was throwing the mud back at the crowd and Mike was going crazy.
Billie Joe was getting pissed off by this point; he knew the whole peace thing was over with so he decided to say into the microphone "This isn't peace, its fucking anarchy." It was then the fans went onto stage, the security tried to get them off but failed, heck they thought Mike was a fan and bludgeoned him and knocked him to near unconsciousness. It was total chaos, Abi and Katie were as scared as hell, they didn't know what to do. The crowd were in an uproar, they were people who were injured, and some that were unconscious, near to everyone was covered in mud. This was gonna be huge and all over the news. Katie and Abi had no utter clue what to do; they both knew if there parents found out that they would be in so much trouble. There parents didn't like them going in the first place but eventually let them because it was an experience for them. It was definitely an experience, not a good one though.
The security decided to do something useful about it. They got Green Day off stage and too backstage, there they got a helicopter out the stadium. It was good for the guys but didn't help the crowd. The crowd had to leave the stadium, to simply put it they weren't civilized about it. Katie and Abi were just stuck in the middle; they didn't even have to walk because the crowd pushed them so hard they moved by themselves. They finally got onto a street that wasn't covered with people; they had a look at each other and saw how cut they were and bruised. They also saw that they needed medical care; they went to the hospital and saw a lot of the people that were from the concert. After around half an hour worth of waiting they got in together to see a doctor.
"So you were at Woodstock as well, you look a little young" Dr Cooper said to the two girls who were sitting up on hospital beds, Katie replied "Ye I know but we didn't know this would happen, we were at the front row though." Dr Cooper looked through the medical cabinet for some bandages and had to bend over, I didn't mention that Dr Cooper was a 24 year old hottie that just so happened to be wearing tight jeans. Men aren't the only gender allowed to be horny, the girls despite barely able to bend sideways did anyway just to see that butt. It satisfied them until he found what he wanted and turned around, the girls acted like they were interested in what he was taking out. He put some cream on the girl's cuts; Abi had one on her stomach area. Katie was jealous and made it obvious by glaring at her in an evil way. Abi voluntarily lifted her top to reveal the cut, Dr Cooper put the cream on it; sure it stung her but she didn't care her eyes were fixated on his smile. He left it on and then told Abi "The cream will take a minute too take effect so if you don't wanna hold your top you could always take it off... unless you don't have a bra on."
"I have a bra don't worry" Abi replied, she took her ruined top off and thankfully she had a sports bra on so not much was revealed, Dr Cooper acted like nothing was wrong, Katie figured because stuff like this usually happened everyday.
Something out of the ordinary did happen though after they talked for a while "Abi, Katie I'd love to take you out somewhere, just hang out really, you seem like great girls" he then said "Don't worry I'm not a perve, I don't usually do this so don't worry." Neither girl did though; all they could do was try not to melt right in front of him. Abi put her top back on and washed the cream off while Katie put some bandages round her calves. They stayed in the room while Dr Cooper helped other patients, they saw that they weren't that much of serious cases compared to others. The most serious case they saw was a broken leg and broken arm; it was fun to hang out with Dr Cooper, sure there was an age difference of 7 years but none of them cared much.
The guys got back to there apartment, they were so shocked about what happened. Mike was going to the dentist to get his teeth fixed while Billie Joe and Tre tried to get over there shock. Who knew at a concert promoting peace would turn into a riot. Mike went into the dentist and they fixed his teeth for him, he was thinking the same as Billie Joe and Tre, but there was one thing the other two didn't think of... what happened to Katie? It was racking in his brain, did she get hurt, how badly, is she alright, where is she, was she in the mud pile and most of all he heard a rumour about someone dieing and that just made him hyperventilate. After he got his teeth fixed he decided to call Katie. Katie's mum picked up the phone and said "Hi Mike, are you alright, I heard about the concert."
"I'm fine, how's Katie doing" Mike replied.
"She's fine, just a few cuts, she's at the local hospital" Katie's Mum told Mike, no sooner did they say goodbye to each other Mike zipped off to the hospital.
He got to the hospital and found a lot of people there from the concert, they all recognised him and a few people tried to jump him. He got out of the annoyed crowd and heard Abi's voice, he followed the sound and found where they were, he saw Katie and Abi in there with the doctor. They were sitting down, he couldn't see the front of the doctor until he turned round, Dr Cooper saw Mike and said to him "You have to wait in line... wait you're that guy in the band."
"Ye I am, this wasn't my fault though it was the fans" Mike replied. Dr Cooper gave Katie and Abi a slip of paper. Mike wondered what it was. Katie saw his face and told him "It's just his number, we're hanging out tonight, and no he's not dangerous just needs to calm down from this day." It still wasn't clear to Mike, he guessed the age of the doctor and knew how much age difference there was. Katie and Abi said goodbye to Dr Cooper and went out with Mike.
Mike still had a couple of issues to sort out. They walked Abi home and then it was just Katie and Mike, they both were quiet, Katie knew Mike didn't like her hanging out with Dr Cooper but didn't know why. They kept on walking; Mike just had to break the ice by saying "Why are you hanging with a guy 7 years older than you?"
"Why do you care, my life has nothing to do with yours" Katie answered, she had a tone of anger in her voice. "Because were friends and I care for your wellbeing" Mike replied to her comment, Katie wasn't satisfied by his answer and said so "Did you care when you saw me being squished till I was nearly sick, no you didn't you just got on that helicopter and went."
"Katie I wasn't allowed anyone else; I would've if I could've" Mike told her raising his voice as he stepped closer to Katie. "Mike, I'm going to university next year, you can't protect me forever" Katie shouted stepping even closer to Mike, Mike hated to make her angry at him, he felt so upset inside. He still loved her, but she hated him, it was that ying-yang effect that made them kiss. Mike didn't want to stop but Katie did, she pulled herself away from Mike. She just said to him "I don't kiss and make-up" before she walking quickly off. Mike just stood there; he didn't know what just happened. Katie hated Mike so much, words didn't describe it. She decided to spite Mike and hang out with Dr Cooper.
Abi met up with Katie, they were at a guitar store, for some odd reason Dr Cooper asked them to meet him there. They saw Dr Cooper, he looked like any normal guy, he was wearing the same thing as earlier but without the doctor jacket, instead a brown suede jacket and he looked totally different. Abi and Katie walked up to Dr Cooper and greeted him by saying "Hey Dr Cooper."
"Don't call me Dr Cooper, call me Rob" Rob told them, he shook both their hands, he had such a firm grip, it made both girls melt like butter. He beckoned them to the seats next to where he was sitting before. They sat down and Rob picked up the guitar he was using, he then said to the girls "I like to come here after my shifts, I play doctor by day, crazy guitarist by night... unless I have a night shift." Abi and Katie laughed; Rob started playing a blue's piece. They both saw the passion in his eyes, they just watched and listened. After he finished they started talking, they talked about everything, life, love, the world, they could've gone for hours but they couldn't. They left the guitar store and walked along the streets of Berkeley, it was beautiful to see the place they had lived all there lives at night, the light shone on the smooth pavement, the sky was filled with stars looking down upon them. It couldn't be a more perfect evening; they kept on talking, Rob dropped Abi and Katie off at there homes.
Mike was looking from his window and saw into Katie's, she was so happy, he felt angry but at the same time that smile that came from her mouth made him want her even more and any sign of anger just went away. It was the last time for a while Mike would see Katie for he was going into the studio.
