80, chapter 4
The days past and the Armstrongs enjoyed the time they spent together. New Years came and Adrienne left the kids with Tamara. 80 enjoyed it so much, the performance, party, attention. But it was short-lived, Billie Joe left two days later to New York for a series of interviews, but was going to come back soon. School started again for the boys, and Adrienne spent a lengthy time with Joey’s teacher talking about how Billie Joe was a nice, normal father and his kids deserved just as much respect as all other parents and kids.
“Tamara, how are you?� Adrienne said into the receiver.
“Fine, I’m tired though.�
“Ugh, can I come to your place? I just dropped the kids off at a party and I need someone to talk to because I’m so bored.�
“Umm, fine,� Tamara said reluctantly. “It’s messy though.�
Adrienne went to her car and drove to her friend’s house. Along the way she turned the radio on to her Boulevard of Broken Dreams, which wasn’t unusual. The song eventually died down, but Adrienne heard it keep going for some strange reason. She stopped the car and got out. She turned around and found herself facing a three story apartment from which she could clearly hear Boulevard of Broken Dreams coming from the highest floor. It stopped abruptly in the middle and she could hear some shouting. She went up to the apartment and was about to press the intercom button, when she phoned up Tamara and said that she was going change her mind about coming. She pressed the button marked “and was surprised to hear the voice of a young girl.
“Hello? Who is it?� the voice asked.
“Hey, you know, uh, this may sound weird, but I like the sound of your band, could I perhaps come up?�
“Uh...� there was a pause. “Sure.
She went up to the third floor, where there was only one apartment. The door was slightly open and she heard some talking coming from inside. She went in. “Hi, I’m...�
“Wait, I’ve seen you before, you’re Adrienne Armstrong! Oh my gosh! You co-own Adeline Records and your husband is Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day! Wow, I have to say, without you, Green Day just wouldn’t be the same. Like, I mean, there would be no Redundant or Brain Stew or 80 or 2,000 Light Years Away and there wouldn’t be any AFI cause of Adeline Records and, this is so cool.� said the girl in a huge rush as if to get all her thoughts out all at once.
“Yeah, I’ve never actually been recognized.� said 80, slightly shocked.
“You should get more recognition in my opinion.� said the girl.
“Do you, like, stalk me or something cause I never knew that one person could know that much about me.� Adrienne asked. She was still a little shocked from being recognized by a total stranger.
The girl said, “No, I’m just really thankful that you were the one Billie Joe chose as his wife cause you guys look great together and you didn’t have a two day marriage or something.�
That comment made 80 feel so good about her and Billie Joe, even during the hard times.
“Wait, you partly own Adeline Records?� asked one of the boys. “And why are you here.�
“Well, I heard you from outside and I thought you were great, don’t think I just go to random strangers houses all the time. I mean I heard you guys from outside and you sounded great. Let me just hear you guys play something, anything.�
“Does it have to be Green Day?�
“No. Just play.�
They played Los Angles is Burning by Bad Religion. Adrienne was really impressed, and she wasn’t usually impressed, but this impressed her. She thought they were great. A guy on the drums with just as much energy as Tre, a guy on bass who seemed to have played bass for all his life, and a guy and a girl on guitar. With their combined voices, they created a sound similar to that of the Distillers, except the girl wasn’t singing the lead. In fact, after they performed and talked a little, Adrienne seemed to think that the other guy on the guitar was almost trying to ignore the girl, but the other guys seemed to like her. They arranged for the band to send 80 a demo later and then she left.
Adrienne felt very happy about the day. As she went to pick up the kids, she thought she had found the almost perfect. She knew the perfect one was somewhere in New York probably being interviewed by some news paper.
Two days later, on the 7th, the band came back for one last time for a party to celebrate the beginning of the international Idiot tour which would start in Germany on the 11th. Everyone who was in some way associated with Green Day came. Tre, Mike, and Billie Joe of course, Claudia, Sarah, Donna, Tamara, Jason, all the kids. It was a big party in the Local Hero’s restaurant. It was so much fun to see all the kids playing together. Then at the end of the party, Tre and Donna did a most surprising thing. Tre stood up on one of the tables and said “Well, it’s been great. It really has, and I’m glad I spent it with this gal here. So, I may be wasted, but I know that I’m in love with you, Donna. No matter how drunk I am, I will always remember that I love you. Will you marry me?�
Everyone went silent. I wasn’t sure to laugh because Tre was really drunk, or cry because he was so in love. Donna looked so nervous.
“Um, yes,� she said solidly. “Yes, Tre, I love you and I want to be with you forever.�
Everyone cheered.
“Champagne!� Mike managed to yell above the crowd. Then Tamara brought all the kids to her house and the dancing began with some slow dances, requests, performances by none other than Green Day, and everything else.
