When You Wish You had Forgotten..., chapter 6
Back at the hotel room, Billie sat alone. Tre had passed out on the couch. The door opened to find Mike and Amira walking in, talking and laughing.
"Hey Billie," Amira said brightly.
Billie, whom only consumed two beers instead of 10 plus the mini bar, smiled. He got up and hugged her tightly. "Everything okay?" he asked quietly in her ear. She nodded.
Mike was poking Tre.
"Hey... Mike?" Billie asked nervously. "Can I talk to you?"
"Huh? Oh. Yeah... "
Mike and Billie went out into the hall.
"Um... About Amira--"
"I don't really want to hear it," Mike groaned.
"Please? Just for a second?" said Billie, wanting both to punch Mike and to make him feel okay about the whole thing. Mike didn't answer; instead he stared at the ground. "Look, nothing happened... We stopped before... anything. And it was a weird thing. I wasn't really sure what happened. Until... "
"I understand. Just... Yeah. I understand." Mike said quietly, still staring at the ground.
--
Billie didn't see Amira for a little over a year. Mike had forgotten, actually, the whole band did. Jason didn't even really know the whole story. After the show, everyone went to their hotel rooms. No one had slept the night before and the tour was at its end.
Falling into a bland sleep, he vaguely heard a noise. It became louder.
"Ughh... " Rolling over, he finally realized it was the door. "Come in,"
The knocking stopped. Groaning, he got up and made it to the door.
Wincing at the light from the hall, he squinted.
"Uh... Hey Billie Joe... "
Billie just stared.
"What are you doing here?!"
Amira's black hair shone in the hall light, and she looked haloed like an angel.
"I wanted to see you," she responded, a child's whine in her quiet voice.
"Oh. Come in," HE stepped out of the doorway and watched her as she walked in. "How are you?" he asked.
"Okay," she said as she sat down on the couch.
"Good."
"You know, the whole Mike thing... I loved him. And I still do. But he's got a kid, I mean, fuck... I can't deal with that. But... what I wanted to say was that I would still marry him. But now that's he's finally moved on, its too late... "
Billie sat there for a moment. "He's in room 210." He said simply.
Surprised, Amira looked at him with wide eyes.
Nervously, she knocked on the door, her heart beating in her head.
The door opened suddenly, leaving a stunned Mike on the other side.
"Hi," he said weakly.
"Hello... "
"What are you doing?"
"I wanted to talk... "
He gestured for her to come in, though still puzzled.
She sat down rigidly on the edge of his bed.
"Do you love me?" she asked, looking at him with her gentle eyes.
"What? Yeah... I love you... " Mike was still confused as to why she was there, but too sleepy to ask.
"Will you marry me?"
"What the fuck? No. Why are you here? Are you having a mid-life crisis or something?"
"No." Amira said quietly.
"Then get out. Because I did this once, and I will not do it again. I loved you, I still love you, but I'm not willing to trust you again. Please go." He said, almost bitterly.
"I'm so sorry." She whispered. "I never meant to hurt you,"
"I know. But you did."
She just nodded and closed the door behind her. As soon as he heard the door click, he let himself cry
-
"Billie... " Mike said the next morning. "I'm over it. Over it all."
Billie glanced questioningly at Tre, but nodded. "That's good."
Mike nodded. He wasn't better, he wasn't worse. And right then, that's all he wanted.
