A Green Day Dream, chapter 3
"Hey, what are you waiting for?" Billie Joe asked as he was getting out of the car, "Come on in."
I just sat there in his car, completely unaware that he was talking to me.
"Hey, you ok?"
"Huh? Oh, yeah. Sorry. Um, what were you saying again?"
"I said, we're here, come on in."
I got up out of the car, and then shut the passenger door. I slowly walked up to the front of the car where Billie Joe was waiting for me. He put an arm around me and led me to the front door. I almost tripped because he was walking so much faster than I was when he started to lead me (Even though I'm normally a very fast walker). I was getting more and more nervous the closer we got to the door (I'm not sure why I was so petrified, being as these were 6 and 9 year old kid. Too young to be scared over).
He must have felt me tense up, because he stopped me in front of the door. "Hey, what's wrong?"
"Huh? I don't know. A few things I guess."
"Like...?"
"Well, like, what if you're wrong and they don't like me, what if Adrienne's here, if she's not her, what if she shows up, and then, what happens next?"
"Wow, you do have a lot on your mind. Don't you ever think of it as 'just wing it' or 'let whatever happens happen?'"
"Well, yeah, but, not now. Now it's just too complicated."
"Well, let me try to uncomplicate a few things for you. 1: I promise, they WILL like you, 2: Adrienne is NOT here, 3: She wont show up because she's visiting her mother in North Carolina, and 4: No matter what happens next, we'll be there for each other."
"Really?"
"Well, I know I'll be there for you, will you be there for me?"
"Of course I will, you know that."
"Well then, everything will be fine. Now, are you ready to go in?"
"As long as you are there with me, yes. I'm ready for anything."
"Then let's go."
He led me inside, and Jakob and Joey come running up to us. "Hey daddy, hey daddy. Who's that, who's that?" they chanted.
"Hey boys, this is Wendy."
"Ooh, is she your new girlfriend?" (Wow, they speak perfectly in unisen).
"Promise not to tell your mother?"
"Yeah, yeah, is she is she?"
"Ok, but if you tell her, you're both grounded, you got it?"
"Yeah, yeah, now who is she?"
"Ok, yes, she is my new girlfriend. Now like I said, if you tell mommy, you're both grounded, ok?"
"Ok."
"Alright, now, I'm gunna go get us some pizza, so you all play nice."
"Wait Billie Joe," I said rushing up to him, "What if I need to call you while you're gone?"
"Why would you need to call me?"
"I don't know, in case there's an emergency."
"Well then here's my cell number, and the house number for future use," he then gave me the two numbers I needed.
"Ok everyone, I'll be back in about twenty-five minutes."
"Ok," we all said in perfect unisen (wow, must be contageous).
"Hey Wendy, hey Wendy, will you play a game with us?"
"Um, sure, what do you want to play?"
"Hide and go seek, hide and go seek." of course, they just had to pick my least favorite game.
"Well, ok."
"Yay! You count, we'll hide."
"Ok... 1... 2..." I started, but then the phone rang. Oh no, should I answer it? What if it's Adrienne calling to check up on Billie Joe, or one of their friends calling to talk, and they think Billie Joe is having an affair with her using me? I decided not to answer it, and instead just let the answering machine pick it up.
*Answering machine* "Hey Wendy, come on, pick up..." It sounded like Billie Joe, but the phone always changes voices, "...Come on, it's me, Billie Joe. Come on, do you not like me anymore or something? Please..."
Well, that was all the convincing I needed, so I picked it up. "Hey."
"Wow, about time. What was that all about?"
"Oh, sorry, the boys wanted me to play hide and seek with them."
"Really? You don't have to make excuses. I know you were worried about who was going to be on the other line, but you didn't have to wait that long, I mean, you should have just picked up when I said your name. Who else would know you're here? Well, anyway, it's over now. But yeah, you see, I told you they'd like you."
"Hehe, yeah, well, maybe I better go find them before they think I forgot about them. Are you almost home?"
"Yeah, I'll be there in about ten minutes."
"Ok, see you soon."
"Ok, just make sure you delete that message that I just left."
"Oh, yeah, ok, bye."
I hung up the phone and deleted the message, and then found another message from about five minutes before I had arrived at the house. I decided to listen to it. *Answering machine* "Hey Jakob, Joey, Billie Joe. It's mommy Adrienne. Well, I just wanted to let you know that my trip got cut a little short, so I'll be coming home a little early. See you all soon. Love you!"
"I guess I better leave that one for Billie Joe to listen to," I thought to myself, as I pressed the 'save message' button. I started counting again, "3... 4... 5! Ok, ready or not, here I..." I went silent and stared at the doorknob. It started to twist. It felt as if my heart had leaped up to my throat. The door swung open. "Oh god, PLEASE be Billie Joe," I screamed in my head.
"WHO ARE YOU?!?!" screamed Adrienne at the top of her lungs.
I just sat there in his car, completely unaware that he was talking to me.
