Sometimes You Feel Like a Nut, chapter 2
Ok, so it wasn't really ringing, it was more like playing Holiday, which was really embarrising. Adrienned didn't need to know that her new neighbor was a Green Day freak. Hoping she wouldn't realize what song it was, I answered it as fast as I could.
"Hello?"
"Hi... This is Ben, the manager of the moving company you hired. The mover's truck broke down. They're not going to get there until tomorrow. I hope this isn't too muck of a problem for you."
"No, no, it's fine. Just please get tell them to get down here ASAP!"
"They'll try."
"Thank you." And I hung up.
"SHIIIIT!" I was so close to hitting my head on the table right now.
"What's wrong?" Adrienne asked me. She actually sounded sincere, too. I know that sounds weird, but I never imagined her or Billie being really nice people. I mean, obvioulsy they're not bad people, but a majority of even the sweetest people in the town I come from wouldn't let you use their Asprin and lotion, let you call your mom just because you were feeling homesick, AND let you answere your cell phone in their kitchen.
"The mover's truck broke down, so I only have my lounge to sleep on tonight. I know that's not a huge deal, but sleeping is like my number one thing, ya know?"
"Yeah. You can sleep on the couch tonight, if you want. I'm sure Billie won't mind."
"What about Joey and Jakob? Aren't they gonna get creeped out with a stranger on their couch?"
"No, they'll be fine. I'll tell them later."
"Where are they anyway?"
"Joey's at a friend's house and Jakob is taking a nap."
"Oh... OK. Are you sure you don't mind me staying? I don't won't to seem like a moocher or anything.
"No... It's fine. I wouldn't have offered it if I thought you were going to be using us."
"Thank you." Jeez, how many times have I said that now?
I looked down at my watch to see it was 6:00pm. I'd been over here for 4 hours. I had a feeling I had over stayed my welcome for the time being, so I stood up, grabbed my shirt, and started towards the hallway.
"Where are you going?"
"I figured I should probably go get something to eat."
"You can stay here. I personally don't want to eat dinner with just Joey and Jakob. I miss having adult conversations at dinner."
"Ok. I just didn't want to be moochery."
As I turned around, I could hear her laughing at my word. I've always made up word. I guess it was something that helped me hide from people. You know, not let them get to my core; the real me. That's why I came to Oakland, so I could be me, the real me. Apparently it was going to take awhile.
We sat and talked for a little while longer and then started dinner. It'd been forever since I had a homecooked meal, or even something that didn't come out of a box or was full of sugar. It turned out that we were making my favorite meal, spinach and cheese ravioli.

Just before dinner was ready, Joey walked in the door. Jakob had been up for about half an hour (Jeez that boy can sleep), and, after digging his fingers into Adrienne's arm at the sight of a stranger in his house, was told what was going on. Joey was informed after standing in the doorway, not sure if he should com in or not. Can you blame either of them? I really don't look like a very friendly person and I was in their house.
After dinner, I had to run over to my house to get my pajamas and stuff. Joey and Jakob were finally OK with me, thank God. Of course, I had forgotten to lock the door and had left my purse and my most valuable thing unprotected. I could only pray that nothing had happened. And with my luck... Nothing did. I may be a dumb ass, but I'm a damn lucky one.
So I got my stuff, remembered to lock the door and put my valuable stuff in a safer place, and headed back to my home for the night. Before I opened the door to Billie's house, I had to stop and pinch myself. Thank God it hurt like hell. I had wanted this since I had started liking Green Day. Yeah, I know it's weird, but I've wanted to be a family friend to the Armstrongs forever. Don't ask 'cause I can't tell. But, the way things were going, my sick and twisted dream was going to come true.
When I walked in the house, everyone was sitting on the couch watching something on TV. I didn't take the time to see what it was; I just wanted to get into my pajamas and take a couple more Asprin. My back still hurt, but now it only REALLY hurt when something solid touched it, like a pillow or chair.
"Where's the bathroom?" I was starting to sound like I did back home.
"There's one down that hallway, first door on the left," Adrienne said, pointing at the hallway near the kitchen, "And one upstairs, third door on the right.
"Thanks."
I headed upstairs, even though the other was WAY closer. I always liked making life harder for myself. I always went to the bathroom farthest away from people, too. I swear I'm the weirdest person I've ever met. The hallway seemed to go on FOREVER! There were pictures all over the ways of Joey and Jakob. There were a few of Billie Joe and Adrienne, too, and a few a people I had no clue who they were.
Once in the bathroom, I quickly changed into my Darth Vader boxers and my old black Joe Boxer tank top. Then I ran downstairs and watched TV.

That night I couldn't sleep worth crap. Part of it was the fact that my back hurt like hell. I guess I was worried about Billie Joe showing up and freaking out over the sight of me on the couch, too. I had been asleep for a little while, but around midnight, I woke up for no apparent reason, sweating my head off. I turned on the TV, attempting to go back to sleep, like I used to do back home. I turned on VH1 ane the Wake Me Up When September Ends video was on. I instantly started crying. In the middle of the video, and me sobbing, the door opened.
Billie Joe was finally home and he was seeing me, a total stranger, sitting on his couch, sobbing to one of his videos. He must have thought that was creepy, and pathetic. Even at that, he still seemed to care.
"Are you OK?"
"Yeah. Sorry. I'm fine."
"Then why are you crying?"
"Because..." I really didn't want to tell him why, but I knew if I didn't, I'd never get anywhere near his good side. And besides, I was trying to start anew, and the old me would've shut out the world.
"I'm an overly sensitive person who gives a shit about people she doesn't even know."
That was only part of it. The video reminded me of the day, when I was 12ish, that I find out my brother had to find the Goddam war. It hurt like hell, but I had to suck it up and be stronger for my grandma, mom, and sisters, so I really didn't get to grieve. But, Billie probably didn't want to know that, so I kept that in.
"That's sweet. Ummmmmmm... Are you gonna need any help unpacking tomorrow?"
"Uh... Yeah."
"Cool... I'll get Mike and Tre to help, too.
"Cool Beans. I dried my eyes of what tears were still left. "Thanks Billie."
"It's no problem. Not like I have anything better to do." Billie said as he turned towards the stairs.
"Wait."
"Yeah?"
"Can I have a hug?"
"Yeah, sure."
That hug was THE best hug I EVER had in my life, and I've had a lot of hugs. If I didn't die at the door, I was past dead now. That hug brought back a happiness that I hadn't had in awhile. From that moment I knew Oakland was my home for life.
