That Friday night Adrienne had one of the best evenings she had had in a long time. He was different from any man that she had ever been with in the past. He was quiet yet more than capable at holding a decent conversation. He was intelligent and able to make her laugh. He drove her home and as he began to say goodnight Adrienne did something that she did not normally do. She invited him in for coffee. He smiled when she suggested this. He had planned on making this part of his game longer. The chase was all part of the fun. It was his foreplay but the urge to do it tonight became too strong.

"If you're sure." was his reply.

She let him inside and switched off the burglar alarm. She told him to have a seat in the lounge while she went into the kitchen. He sat down on the sofa and began inspecting the room. He looked at the photographs in frames on a table; there was one of a baby and another of Adrienne with a man and woman whom he assumed were her parents.

Adrienne entered the room and placed two mugs on the coffee table and sat down next to him. For a few moments they sat there in silence. He began to plan how he was going to do this; she worked with the police and would be perfectly able to defend herself. Maybe this had been too risky after all but it was too late to back out now.

Maybe this one would the best yet. None of the others really put up a fight, sure they resisted but he was always in control and was able to subdue them easily. Adrienne would be different. She wouldn't go out without a fierce battle that he was now beginning to anticipate. He decided to make his move. He leaned in close and started to kiss her. For a while he let her kiss him back, even let it become deeper and more passionate. He lifted his hands and at first placed them gently on her neck. His grip then tightened and he began to squeeze hard.

He saw her face fill with shock and terror and a surge of excitement rose within him. But as he had expected she was physically strong and placed her own hands around his and began to prize them apart. He fought to keep his dominance over her and she kicked, able to get away. She ran towards a dresser in the hallway in which she kept her gun.

She heard footsteps behind her and it unnerved her to see that he was walking casually towards her, calm as could be. Adrienne's mind rushed as she fumbled through drawers, looking for her .38. He was the killer that they were searching for. His victims flashed before her eyes. She was now feeling the same fear that they had felt. She was looking up at the same, cold, evil stare as they had and wondered if would be the last thing she ever saw.
