The Titleless Story, chapter 11
>Joey's POV<
Trey was taking me home tonight and I couldn't be more excited to see Lindsey. Too excited that I wanted to make a stop at her house before going home to see my mom. Trey was going home so he could leave us alone, so he gave me the key to her house. As I walked up to the door, I realized it was already open slightly. I shook it off and walked in slowly. As I was closing the door behind me, I heard a blood-curdling scream and then glass shattering. I sprinted up the stairs and ignored the pain my side was in. I pushed open the door and found Lindsey lying in a pool of blood on the ground next to her bed. The window above her dresser had been shattered and the wind was blowing the curtains in. I froze almost immediately and fell down right next to her, dumbstruck. I picked her up and held her limp body close to my heart. Before I even got a chance to call them, Trey and Brandon came running threw the door and froze at the sight of Lindsey in my arms.
"Call an ambulance," I said quietly, "Call a god damn ambulance!" I screamed this time and Trey ran down the stairs to the phone. Brandon came over and helped me pick her up and take her down stairs. By the time we reached the bottom, the paramedics were entering the house, lights were flashing all around outside and you could hear police sirens in the back round. Everything was slow motion from there. I slowly blinked at the ambulance that was speeding away, with Lindsey in the back. I fell to my knees and put my head in my hands and began to let it all out. I knew it was him, Frank that did this. I put my head up at the cold touch of Nikki's hand.
"The police want to talk to you Joey," she said softly. I nodded slightly and stood up with her help. I limped over to the officer that was standing at the doorstep.
"Mr. Larson, I presume?" he asked taking out his notebook and pen. I nodded and stuck my hands in my pockets.
"Well, we would like to know what you know about this incident," he said signaling for another officer to come over. The other officer kept eyeing me weirdly because I had all this blood all over me.
"So, exactly what happened?" he asked writing something down.
"I was dropped off by Trey, and when I entered the door that was already open, I heard Lindsey scream." I said running my hand through my hair.
"And that's when you found her in her bedroom you say?" he asked lifting head to look at me. I took a nervous gulp and nodded.
"Then you are free to go, just one more thing," he said walking me over to the porch swing. He got something out of his pocket and held it in his hand.
"We found this next to her bed," he opened his hand and there lying in his palm was Lindsey's wedding ring. I took it and fell back onto the swing. I closed my eyes and held it with my fingers tightly gripped around it. The officer walked off and in the distance, I saw Brandon holding a crying Minni. My parents were out talking to Lindsey's and Nikki was talking on the phone. I didn't know where Trey was until I saw him coming up the porch steps.
"Hey man," he said taking a seat next to me. I heavily sighed and leaned back slouching in the wooden swing.
"... I can't even... Think right now... " I said quietly staring out in front of me, not really directly looking at anything.
"Do they have any leads yet?" Trey asked twiddling his thumbs. I shook my head and looked down at my feet.
"No... They don't even know how this could of happened. I mean, he was in the hospital nearly dead." I said turning to look at him. He looked over my shoulder and then at me.
"... Don't get upset or anything, but the cops don't really... Well, they don't think that he did this." He said looking away. I widened my eyes and gripped the ring tighter in my hand.
"What do you mean he didn't do this?" I said raising my voice slightly. Trey shot right at me and bit his lip. "Answer me Trey!" I yelled.
"Joey, they think you... Did this," he said looking back at the cops then at Nikki, and then at Minni and Brandon. I closed my eyes tight in disbelief.
"Why the hell would they think I did this?" I asked getting up.
"I don't know! They won't be able to do anything until Lindsey wakes up!" he yelled standing up. "Joey, she's the only one that can clear you! If she dies, you will be blamed for her murder!" he yelled taking a step closer to me.
"... But, you believe me right?" I asked falling back down on the swing. He stood there still in front of me.
"I don't know who to believe Joey, I'm sorry," he said before walking of into the night. I sat there staring off into space thinking about what would happen to me if Lindsey didn't make it. Never in my whole life I thought that I would be in this situation. Lindsey was the only one who could save me.
How long before I get in, before it starts, before I begin?
How long before you decide? Before I know what it feels like?
Where to, where do I go? If you never try, then you'll never know...
Yet another frustrating day without Lindsey. I still couldn't believe that they thought I was responsible for this. But what I really didn't want to believe was the fact Trey didn't believe me. Even my friends see right past my feelings. I sighed and got out of bed. Today was the day I could see Lindsey. At first they had their doubts, but they had no accusations against me yet, so they had no reason to keep me away from her. Although this was cleared, everyone that visited her had to be escorted with a cop, as everyone at the moment was a suspect. I stared at my reflection in the bathroom mirror. That stupid cut that was below my ear was finally starting to disappear. I sighed and walked down the stairs slowly. I was going with Trey, of all people. I walked out front to where he was meeting me.
"Hey Joey," he said with his hands in his pockets. I sighed at him and walked over to his car. He got in the drivers seat and we drove away. The whole ride was silent and eerie, and the walk through the hospital creped me out even more. We stopped in front of a room that the officer from two nights ago was standing in front of. Trey had already seen her and decided to stay out side and wait for us. The officer opened the door and followed me in. Lindsey was in a pretty bad condition considering "he" had tackled her, beat her up, and stabbed her. A gut feeling came over me, as if this was a sign to spill out all my feelings for her, whether she could hear me or not, as this may be the last time I would see her. I took a seat by the bed and the officer leaned against the door- frame. I took her ring out of my pocket and placed it back on her finger, where it belonged. I sighed as I placed her limp arm back down on the hospital bed.
"Lindsey, I don't know if you can hear me or not, but I know I've told you so many times before," I mentally kicked myself for stammering. I took a deep breath and covered my hand over hers. "I love you Lindsey," I said now feeling tears brimming the sides of my eyes. I leaned over to kiss her, but I stopped when I heard the foot- steps of the officer come towards me. I pat her hand gently and let the cop show me out.
I sat on the porch steps all by my self yet again for the fifth day in a row. They didn't know when Lindsey would be awaking, but I anticipated it more than everyone else. Everyday I would sit out back and watch the sunset and sunrise. Count every second that she was gone. And every second that my life was slowly being washed down the drain.
"Why does it seem that when someone's life is mending, someone else's is falling apart?" Minni's voice came ringing in my mind. I looked up to see her standing there, Brandon's jacket pulled over her tightly. I sighed and hung my head down again.
"Minni, I don't know anymore. Each day it gets harder to function. It's like I'm remotely incapable of living without her." I raised my head now seeing stars slowly start to appear. She nodded and sighed.
"Joey, I know how you feel, every day that I was gone, all I wanted was to be in Brandon's arms, home where I belonged and where my true family was." She sighed taking a seat next to me. I closed my eyes and leaned back, opening my eyes to look at the stars.
"You know sometimes I wonder what life would be like if I never moved here," she said staring at the moon. I rolled my eyes at how many times Lindsey had said that while Minni was gone.
"Sometimes I wonder as well," I said laughing slightly.
"I really just want everything to go back to normal, you know what I mean," she said propping her self up on her elbows. I nodded and looked at her.
"But exactly what is normal?" I asked standing up. I helped her up and she closed her eyes to think about it.
"Nothing," she said before leaving.
"Why does it seem that when someone's life is mending, someone else's is falling apart?" That's what I'd like to know.
"Life is short- a cliché that people use to often. But they're right you know. Life is short. You never know when someone you love is going to just, leave and, snap, like that, your life is never the same. Everything happens for a reason. But what reason was this? You'll never know until it happens, but there is never a way to know what will happen. It just comes like that. Unexpected, and rarely enjoyed. Everything you ever wanted, taken away from you in just moment. In a moment, everything can change... "
It seems that Minni's words have gotten to me. Everyone including myself has lost it. I don't know where to go from here. Lindsey was still in the hospital, but they had lost all hope for her. The thing that got me most was the last glimpse I got of her being taken away in the ambulance. Brandon was always worried about me. How I would go through this. Even they were loosing all hope on her. Ready to pull the plug. But not only on her life, but mine as well. I would not take part in it, cause I'd only wonder and regret. Everything played over and over in my mind. Nothing could push the thoughts out of my thoughts.
"... Say goodbye to the vows you made," I looked up at Brandon who was standing there next to me. He looked like shit. Tears were brimming his eyes. Not a regular sight, even for Minni. Confused as I was, I looked for questions in his eyes. He closed his eyes and opened them after a moment with a sigh.
"It's over Joey, they've given up." His voice was no longer there. He swallowed hard and stared at me. I knew what he was going to say.
"We're leaving in five minutes. I know you said you didn't want to come, but," he sighed and turned his back. "Don't yell at me when you didn't say good bye to the heart you've broke." He started walking and I stood up.
"... I'm coming too," I said starting to feel the burning in my eyes. We walked to the car and drove to the hospital. I was sickened by this, this solution. Why just not one more day? Just a little more time.
Just Minni and I were in the room with the doctor. Lindsey was innocently lying there, not knowing what was going to happen. I watched as the doctor curled his fingers around the plug. I closed my eyes and Minni held my hand tightly. The doctor took one swift movement, and...
