Take Me With You, chapter 14
The phone rang back at Laila's apartment early in the afternoon. Laila was home early from the bar. They closed early considering that no one was coming in because of the horrible storm going on outside.
"Hello?" She answered.
"Hi, Laila it's Billie.," he was cut off.
"Billie what do you want?" she asked him.
"Have you seen Mel? She said something about a waitress helping her that night at the bar and I thought it was you and I thought you might know where she is," he explained his reasoning.
"Yes, Billie she's staying with me until everyone gets worked out," she confessed.
"Oh so you..," he said.
"Yes I know everything. How could you?!" she scolded.
"Look I don't have time for that right now. I'm coming over I need to talk to her," he said.
"Billie wait! She's not here," she told him.
"Well where the hell is she?!" he demanded.
"It's the anniversary of her father's death. She's at her parents' grave. Look Billie I would just leave her alone today isn't a good day to bother her," Laila pleaded with him but he had already hung up the phone.
"Billie? Hello?" Laila tried, but realized he was gone and she hung up the phone shaking her head.
I was on my way to the cemetery both my parents were buried at when my cell phone rang. I picked it up and noticed it was Billie. I didn't answer I couldn't deal with him, not now, not today. Turning in the cemetery I parked the car and descended upon the path that would lead me to my parents resting place. Little did I know if Billie's actions.
Meanwhile, Billie was going crazy. Does he come talk to me, or does he leave me alone on this day of such sorrow. Taking a look outside he noticed the heavy downpour and ever so often the streaks of lightning that raced across the sky. Knowing me he knew I had to umbrella or raincoat. He grabbed his jacket and raced to the cemetery. Once there he parked the car and walked a little ways until he saw me.
There they were Mr. and Mrs. Andrews. Tears filled my eyes and I fell to my knees in front of my parents. Silently sobbing I traced the outline of their names with my fingertips. The streams of my tears being masked by the heavy rain. I was drenched.
Billie walked towards my kneeing figure. He took off his jacket and carefully draped it over my soaked body. I didn't move I just stared at my parent's tombstones. Billie knelt beside me silently lacing his fingers with mine and squeezing my hand tightly. I responded my squeezing tighter and never letting go and never saying a word.
After a few moments Billie took my by the shoulders and pulled me up and back towards his car where he helped me in and drove me back to Laila's apartment. Once there I took squeezed him hand one more time. I was halfway out the car door when he grabbed my hand and was about to say something.
"Don't," I simply said.
He said nothing and sadly watched me leave. Laila was waiting at the door she helped me inside and helped me dry off. After I was in new dry clothes I told her I was just going to be alone in my room for a little while. She understood. Once in my room I noticed I still had Billie's jacket. I laid on my bed and took his jacket covering myself with it and I cried myself to sleep.
I was up early the next morning. I was in a much better mood, my parents were gone and there was nothing I could do about that. I got dressed and ready for the day, and walked out into the living room and say two-dozen roses on the coffee table.
"Oh Laila you didn't tell me you have a boyfriend," I said, taking one of the roses and smelling it.
"I don't. To Mel, I'm sorry and I love you, Billie," she read from a card.
"Ahhh!" I groaned now slumped over on the coach.
"Listen to me Mel. He loves you. He's obviously crazy about you. I know it's gonna be difficult was the whole, pregnant whore thing but if you love him, and I know you do. You have to at least try. Don't let him go," She said now sitting next to me on the couch.
"You're right. I do love him. I just... I don't know. He just wants to be friends. I don't know if I can be friends with him. I'm just so confused," I said, now sitting with my head in my hands.
"Talk to him and figure everything out," she said, handing me the phone.
I took a deep breath and dialed his number.
"Yellow," someone answered.
"Hey Tre is Billie there?" I asked.
"Hey Mel, How's it doing?" Tre asked excitedly.
"Good," I said shortly.
"Good good...uh Billie's around here someone. Oh here he is, hey Bill, phone for you it's Mel," you heard him say.
"Mel?" You heard Billie whisper through the phone.
"Hey Billie," I said.
"Hey How..How are you?" he asked.
"Oh I'm good thanks...for well ...you know," I continued.
"Look Billie I think that was need to talk," I explained.
"I agree, how about we meet at the park," he suggested.
"Sure I'll see you there," I finished before we both hung up.
"Ok we're meeting at the park," you said to Laila you smiled at me.
I wasn't sure why but before I left I checked my hair and make up about a million times. Once I got to the park I didn't see Billie anywhere so I took a seat on a bench. Only a few moments passed until you say Billie join you on the bench through the corner of your eye. You turned sideways on the bench to face Billie and noticed he was out of breath.
"I ran all the way here," He panted.
"A little eager aren't we," I laughed.
"Ok while you catch you're breath I'm going to talk," I continued.
"I love you Billie. I always have and I think I always will. I don't know if I can be friends with you," I paused and watched Billie's breathing slow down as he stared at me paying attention to what I was saying. "And I don't know where I stand with the whole pregnancy issue. I want you to be a part of your child's life and I will not stand in the way of that. I want you to be happy at all costs. I want to be with you. I miss waking up next you and I miss you holding me," I pressed on with tears now in my eyes. "When you said you wanted to be friends, you broke my heart," I couldn't say anymore because I was crying and Billie began to talk.
"I love you too Mel. I know for a fact that will never go away. I want to be with you more than anything in the world but I couldn't bear to see you hurt once everyone starts happening with the pregnancy. I miss you. I miss kissing you and I miss....uh...being with you," I smiled knowing what he was talking about. "But if anything that can hurt me I don't want it to hurt you too," he tried to explain.
"Billie I'm willing to do whatever it takes to be with you. I- love- you-!" I said.
"Really?" Billie said placing a hand on my face and coming closer to me.
"Yes," I said, before taking his hand and kissing it.
"It's not going to be easy but I can't bare to be without you another moment," Billie said watching me wipe away my tears.
As soon as I looked up his lips met mine in a forceful loving kiss.
"Do you want to come home?" he asked with his forehead against mine.
I nodded and we walked back home hand in hand.
"Hello?" She answered.
