The Special Story, chapter 14
"Call me when you want to go home," Cone mother said. "Okay," he said back, "Now lets go!" we quickly ran into the mall being hollering with excitement. "Where do we go first," Cone asked impatiently. "Dippin Dots," Dave hollered. Pointed and jumped up and down excitedly. "I'll be right back, " Cone commented. "Ok," I replied, We wondered over to the stand and I saw somebody I knew. I got a nervous feeling in the pit of my stomach. "Tr...," I tried to say but he cut me off, "I think I'll take this back." He grabbed my dog collar and ripped off the tag he had given me sometime earlier. He slammed my dog collar, hard in to the palm of my hand and stomped off. Tears welded up in my eyes and I headed to the bathroom.
Cone's POV
I came back over to the guys and asked, "Where's Cassidy?" "Um... some guy like took a chain off her dog collar and he just walked off," Deryck replied. I had to think as I watched Deryck buy the Dippin Dots. "Does your girlfriend want one," he asked. "Girlfriend," I said in a surprised voice. "Does she want one or not," he asked again impatiently. "Yeah sure, "I replied still surprised by what Deryck said. He paid and I asked, "Can you hold on to hers while I go and look for where she ran off to?" "Yeah sure, only if you of her tell me what happened after you find her," Deryck replied. I nodded my head quickly and ran off.
I heard crying coming from the girls bathroom. I couldn't go in there and I knew it. But part of me said I had to. I held my breath and galloped into the girl's restroom with all the strength and courage I had.
"Cassidy," I whispered her name as I sat in a stall. I heard sniffles echoing through the stalls. "Who are you," she said through her sniffles. "Cone," he whispered so nobody could hear.
"Why are you here?"
"I wanted to see what happened."
"Tre he....he stole..... the.... tag from my collar."
"I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault. I just never knew Tre would get this crazy over this."
"I didn't know either."
"It's all my fault he's pissed off at me. I had to make Mike feel better by say I love him and Tre of course had to hear. Why didn't I think that he would go and look for us? I am such and idiot."
"You are not an idiot. You were trying to make your friend feel better and if Tre can't take that maybe he isn't such a great friend after all."
I heard her make a loud sigh and say, "I guess not. I mean if he gets worked up over something as small as this, imagine how he'll be in the future."
"Yeah, it could get as bad as him getting jealous if you just hang out with another guy."
"Ok, how about we go and see the guys before they get really worried about us."
"Them, worried? Nah..."
We both quickly made our way out of the stalls and ran to the guys. Deryck handed Cassidy her ice cream and a spoon. "Did you lick that before you gave it to her," Steve joked. "Maybe," he replied smiling evilly. "DID YOU," Cassidy asked in an even more impatient voice. "No, no. I didn't lick the spoon before I gave it to you," he said shaking his head. She happily ate her ice cream. She walked ahead of us trying to find a store for us to go to. "Psst, Cone I wanna tell you something. Promise me not to tell her until she is done," Deryck said. "I promise," I said wanting to hear. "I did lick the spoon," he said snickering to himself. Dippin Dots came out of my nose and Dave and Steve quickly handed me some napkins. After I cleaned up myself I told them, "Deryck did lick the spoon." They cracked up. Cassidy looked at us in laughing fits, "Ok, what's going on?" "Nothing," we all said at the same time. She gave us a funny look and continued walking. I snickered really loud because she seemed so oblivious. She dragged us into a girlish clothes store and we poked around at the stuff. Deryck walked up to her and asked, "You enjoying the ice cream I bought you?" "Um... yeah, why do you ask," she replied. "No reason. I was just wondering if you liked the flavor I got you," you could tell he was lying. "Um... yeah, thanks," she replied. He nodded his head and wondered off towards us. "SO OBLIVIOS," he whispered really loudly.
"Did you know it's her birthday today, I think we should throw her a party or something," I said. "Sounds cool, parties are awesome. Especially ones that we plan," Steve said grinning. "Ok so how do we plan it with Cassidy not finding out about it and becoming hurt that she thinks we are ignoring her," Dave asked. "That's a tough one," Steve said scratching his chin. "Hey Cone how about you take her some places and stuff so we can buy her presents," Deryck suggested. "I guess but she may get suspicious and stuff, like you guys are trying to avoid her or something," I said. "Got any brighter ideas," Deryck asked. "No," I said. "Then let's put this plan into action," Deryck said giving me a high five. "Alright," I said as Deryck walked away, "Can I tell her that you licked the spoon when she's finished?" He nodded his head and smiled as he walked over to the other guys.
The other guys began to walk out of the store and Cassidy saw them, "Hey where are you guys going?" "Um... they are going to get more food, they didn't have lunch and they are really hungry," I lied. She shrugged and continued poking around at the clothing. "I want green hair," she said. I was surprised by her randomly saying that, "That was random." "Yeah it was," she said chuckling lightly. Then it hit my like a sack of potatoes, that could be what I give her for her birthday. I smiled as I watched her finish her Dippin Dots. I snickered and she gave me a weird stare. "He licked the spoon didn't he," she asked. "Well, you are just going to have to wait until you see him again and ask him," I said smiling. "I have a surprise for you," I said blindfolding her. "Huh, hey where am I," she asked nervously. "You'll see," I said dragging her into a salon. I whispered to the person, "Ok, this may sound crazy but I want her to have neon green streaks in her hair. Try to keep it quiet, it's a surprise." He nodded his head and took her over as I paid the cashier. I asked, "How long will it take?" "It'll take about fifteen minutes," he responded quickly. I nodded and said, "I'll be back. Be sure she doesn't freak out because you must keep her blindfolded until I tell you, you can take it off."
"Hey guys," I said when I found them. "What did you do with Cassidy," Deryck asked. "You'll see," I said smiling. He shrugged and asked, "Did you tell her that I liked the spoon?" "Nope, I'll leave that to you," I said smiling, "So what have you guys got?" "Um... stuff. Do you think she'll suspect something?" "Nah... we are pretty secretive," Dave replied. I nodded my head. "So what are you guys buying for her," I asked. "I bought her a wolf stuffed animal," Steve said holding it up. I nodded my head and said, "She'll love that." "What are you getting her," I asked Deryck. "A wedding ring," he said. We were all silent for a moment giving each other worried looks. "Just kidding." I cracked up, "I'd hope so." He nodded his head and smiled. "So what did you really get her," Dave asked trying to take a peak inside his shopping bag. He abruptly closed in and said, "I ain't telling none of you guys." We all made over exaggerated pouts but he still wouldn't tell us. "So Dave what did you get her," I asked. "Um... I got her a skirt," he said. "Is it a really short one," Deryck asked. He shook his head. Deryck made an over exaggerated frown and we all giggled lightly to ourselves. I looked at my watch. "I'll be right back," I said as I ran off.
When I got to the salon, I had gotten there just in time. The dude had just finished. I mouthed the words, "Thank you." And he just smiled and quickly nodded his head. I took her to a mirror and took off her blindfold. "You can open your eyes now," I said. "What the....," her eyes widened, "Thank you so much." She threw her arms around me and gave me a huge hug. I smiled and said, "I knew you would love it." "Why did you do this," she asked. "Your birthday of course, silly," I replied. "I thought you forgot." "Nope. How could I forget?" "I dunno those are usually the things people forget about." "Those guys take a long time to eat." I nodded and said, "Let's go and check out where they are, I doubt they are still eating," I said. She nodded her head and we we're off.
"Hey," Cassidy said to them when we noticed them. I saw them. They didn't have their shopping bags. I think they hood them somewhere. I just hope it wasn't someplace stupid, like the trash can. These guys aren't the brightest guys in the world, but I shouldn't be talking. "You guys take a while to eat," Cassidy stated suspiciously. Deryck nodded. "I'm hungry now though I will get something to eat but you guys but not run to far away from me," She said. We all nodded and wondered off. "So do you think we should invite Tre, Mike, Billie Joe and Natalie," I asked. "Definitely Natalie and Billie. They haven't because any trouble for her," Dave said nodding. "What about Mike and Tre," I asked. "Hm..." Steve said scratching his chin. "Maybe we can invite them and we can help sort things out and things will be all hunky dory," Deryck said. "It isn't that simple. I saw what happened that night but I guess it's worth a try. I mean if worse comes to worst we can break them up and send Tre home, "I said. The others nodded. "Dude how do we keep her busy while we set up and stuff," Deryck asked. "I'll take care of that," I replied.
When we got home I told Cassidy, "How about we go on a walk?" She nodded, "I like evening walks. Besides that's how I met you."
"It's was all like you know, a miracle."
"You could say that. I mean my life was terrible and imagine if I figured out my father was in the hospital and you weren't there. I would have been even more of a mess."
"Yeah, I was happy to see you. But not in the state you were in and stuff."
"I'm glad you were there for me and stuff. You help me get through most of my problems. I couldn't thank you guys enough, especially you."
"Hey, no problem, we would have loved to do even more for you if you needed it."
"Thanks. I wonder how it is going to be like at school tomorrow with Tre being all weird at me."
"No one can really know he is unpredictable guy."
"Yup, I just wish he wasn't so stubborn. I love the guy, his feelings are really delicate."
"Yes."
"You guys have been acting really weird today, is there something you know that I don't?"
She would find out. Just when I knew I had to think of something. My phone rang. I picked it up and heard Deryck's voice, "Cone. Come home now." And he hung up.
"What was that about?"
"Um... it was just my mom saying we have to go home now."
"Okay."
We started walking home.
As soon as we walked near the house she asked, "Why is the house so dark?" We walked inside and there was a loud holler of surprise that echoed through the house. She looked horrified and happy at the same time, if anyone could ever look that way. "TRE, YOU CAME," she hollered through the house.
