Forever Green, chapter 6

‘Maybe you should go, see what Billie’s up to. I’ll be cleaning the lounge if you two need me’, She said before walking away. Steph walked down the house to the backroom Billie was in. We was sitting on he’s bed crying. Not obvious tears, but he’s eyes we’re watering. ‘Billie, you know its okay to cry’, Steph reassured him as she sat down beside him. ‘I’m not crying’, he said. Steph put her arm on his back and rubbed up and down a few times. ‘Everythings going to be okay. You know that right?’, she told him. Billie sat quiet. He looked up at Steph with tears in his eyes. ‘How do I know he’s not gonna hurt her? How do I know she’s gonna be alright?’, he asked. ‘Billie, I don’t know, but she’s your mum. She told you everything was going to be alright. She promised you, and trust me she’ll keep her promise’, Steph assured him. They sat in silence for a while. ‘Maybe you should back to your place. I’ll pack my bags and meet you there later. I gotta talk to my mum’, Billie said to break the ice. Steph got up and walked out and closing the door behind her. ‘Leaving so soon sweetie’, Mrs Armstrong. ‘Yeah, Billie wanted to talk to you about something. I’ll see you later’, Steph said before heading for the door. ‘Honey, wait up a minute’, Mrs Armstrong came running up after her. ‘You wouldn’t happen to know, who Billie’s taking to the formal would you?’, she asked. ‘No, I wanted to ask him, but then he said there was this girl and I thought, he might ask her’, Steph replied. ‘Oh alright, well have fun if you decide to go. I’ll talk to you soon’. And with that Steph left. ‘Billie can I talk to you’, Steph heard Mrs Armstrong say as he closed the door.

On the way home Billie was the only thing Steph could think about. It was driving her crazy. She wanted to know what he was thinking. What he was feeling, but she couldn’t ask, it was just too awkward. She finally got to her place and once inside, locked herself in her room and lay in the dark for a while just thinking. –Back at Billie’s place- ‘Now honey, keep your spirits up, everything’s going to be okay’, Billie’s mum told him. ‘Yes mum’, he replied. ‘And here take this’, she said handing over a small jewellery box to her son. ‘What’s this for?’, He asked. ‘For your date at the formal’, she told him. ‘Mum I’m not going’, he replied. ‘Yes you are. Don’t be silly’, she responded. ‘No mum seriously, I don’t want to go’, he answered. ‘Yes, you do. I know you do. And you’ve got in your mind, who you want to take, your just afraid to ask her’, she said and smiled. ‘Sure mum, sure’, he replied giving his mother a hug and walking for the door with he’s bags. ‘Have fun over the next few days sweetie’, his mother told him before watching him as he walked down the street.

-Back at Steph’s place- ‘Hey Billie’s here’, Mike screamed as he opened the door. Steph and Tre came out of their rooms to greet him. ‘Here we’ll take your stuff for you’, Tre offered as she grabbed the bags off of Billie and took them to the spare bedroom. Billie’s eyes we’re getting darker. He was starting to look like he was going to pass out. ‘Maybe you should sit down Bill’, Mike said. ‘Nah its alright. I’m sorta tired. I might head off to bed if its alright with everyone’, he asked. ‘Yeah sure’. Billie walked down the hall to the spare room. When he got, in, he took the box his mum had given him and hid it under the pillows. ‘You think he’s gonna be alright?’, Steph asked Mike. ‘Yeah he’s a tough kid. He’ll be fine’, Mike told her before sitting down on the lounge. Steph however walked up to Billie’s room. Tre was coming out. He put he’s arm around Steph’s waist and brought her into him against the wall. ‘You alright. You seemed kinda down when you came home before’, Tre asked. ‘Yeah I’m fine. Is Billie alright?’, she asked. ‘Yeah, he’s probably just a little blue. You gonna go in and see him?’,. ‘Yeah I might’, Steph said. Tre kissed her on the forehead before taking his arm back from around her. Steph smiled bleakly and then walked into the room. ‘Billie is it alright if I’m in here?’, she asked. ‘Yeah’, he muttered. Steph walked over to him and lay down next to him. Like she had before, she rolled over to her side and moved his hair from he’s eyes. ‘Your mum talk with you?’, Steph asked. ‘Yeah, she did’, he replied. Steph took a deep breath and placed her arm around him. He didn’t move. She lifted her head and placed it on his chest. She could hear he’s steady heart beat. ‘Steph there’s something I have to tell you……..
